The value of a currency goes up when investors have CONFIDENCE in the country. They buy more dollars. Also, money is required to buy food, medicine, clothing, transportation, utilities, vacations, visits to family members and education. People who have those things are generally happier than people who are struggling, starving, freezing, unhoused, ignorant and not properly clothed. So money makes an adequate yardstick for measuring general well-being. The value of the currency falls when a country is in trouble. Lebanon is the best example of that. You can look up some videos about Lebanon's social problems on utube and those videos constantly refer to the currency problem. Or you can look up the electricity problem and power outages in South Africa.
