I'm Ashkenazi and have been asked (outside of Israel) by a fellow from Lebanon if I am Lebanese. I have been asked if I am Italian or north Indian as well.

Both Arabs and Jews are Semites. The question should be "how can you tell a Semite from an Indo-European"

I am a Palestinian from Nablus. I work in Israel. Most of the customers think I am Jewish at first sight. I do not speak Hebrew very well. When I go to the bars and restaurants and ask the Israelis about the directions and take the taxi I speak English with them. When they ask me where are you from I tell them I am a tourist from Georgia . They do not know that I am a Palestinian Arab. Sometimes they tell me what you think about Israel. Come and visit us again. I feel sad and laughing at the same time.

As a tourist, I couldn't tell the difference. There were spots where there was a great deal of seperation based on really stupid whatever. Like Hebron. But the Arabs were blond, and the Jews had black hair. I remeber seeing some Israeli soldiers at the Damascus gate who looked "arab " and the people hanging around wearing Palestinian dress who looked more "European " than the soldiers.

My family is Ashkenazi but my cousin looks Arab and my great grandfather looks Lebanese. We are not Israeli. Some of us are very fair and some of us are dark.

Generally speaking, I can tell the difference, yet there are times when Arabs can even pass for Ashkenazi Jews.

I had a palestinian friend in the 80's in Jerusalem,he was about 25yrs old, palestinian. He had almost blond curly hair, light skin, brown eyes, tall and musculous, very handsome. Never ever would I have guessed that he was palestinian! He spoke hebrew and English fluently, travelled a lot, dressed like Europeans but he was from Ramallah(I think). Soldiers never stopped him as they assumed he was a tourist or jewish. Later on I wondered if he might have been a jewish spy after all😊

I met this Arab kid in his 20s here in the Detroit area. His father got a job as an interpreter in Iraq. He visited Israel. He said he couldn't tell the Arabs from the Jews.
