Like Ben, I too was raised in California, though a different part. I am American-Israeli, and lived on the Golan. While in the first months after 7 Oct. 23 I was in Tel Aviv, I returned to the north in March '24. This means that I experienced the full menu of Hizbollah rockets, drones, etc., along with other northerners. And since I'm on the Golan, it also means 'receiving' Cruise missiles and drones from Syria and Iraq before the Hizbollah and the Syrian gov't fell (and a few gifts from Iran itself). That said, I see some unpleasant signs from the apparent exchanges between Trump, through Steven Witkoff. As well, looking at the personal financial lives of Mr. Witkoff and Pam Bondi, up for US AG, I see more Qatari connections. I hope that Ben is right about the influence of Hegseth, Huckabee, Walz et al. Ultimately, though, it comes down to Donald Trump's decisions. I fully agree that Israel needs to make its own security decisions and become as independent as possible, because who knows what the political future in the US will say about Middle East policy.
