Hi Alex, great answers and very useful content. I would also recommend reading the Examiners report for each question. I think your assumption that the columns cannot be used creates unnecessary constraints for yourself, and misses the opportunity to re-use existing structure that is capable of supporting the loads. A load balance exercise can validate this.

Hi Alex, great vids on the exam! How do you get access to the istructe past papers? And I would also like it if you could try the 2nd question of this paper, the long span new build with a shooting range. Thanks

Thank you, glad you like them! You may have found them by now, but past papers are on IstructE website, here is a link www.istructe.org/training-and-development/membership-exams/exam-preparation/chartered-membership-exam-resources/. I will have a crack at the 2nd question soon!

Hi Alex, been watching your content and I must say its quite helpful. I hope to sit the IStructE exam in future, as i am still growing as a graduate structural engineer. Just a question though, do you know of any short courses on Structural Engineering to Eurocodes to boost capacity that are offered in the UK? Thanks.

Thank you, happy to hear they are helpful! I think the IStructE have courses for the exam, and then a separate course for designing to Eurocode, check this link www.istructe.org/training-and-development/courses/

Hi Alex, thanks for showing us your approach. I have a few questions, on point 5 of the requirements it says the atrium/staircase/lift areas should be clear of Structures. Isn't this implying that we cannot use these areas for shear walls/ or Structural elements for stability? Other question is should we not assume that we cannot have columns in the corridors? Next one, any thoughts on how part 1b, on how to reduce materials even though ur concepts are both consodering this point? I appreciate your thoughts on this.

Apologies for the misspelling 😂

Hi thanks for the comment. 1.The atrium/stairs/lift area can.t have a floor plate running through it, however I think it.s fine, or even good, to use the perimeter of these spaces for shear walls - that's typical for most lift shafts in standard buildings. 2. I didn't assume we couldn't keep the columns in the corridors because it wasn't explicitly stated, and re-using existing structure is the usually the more sustainable option where possible. Might be worth reading the examiner report to see if they agreed. 3. I would suggest editing the brief in 2 ways, firstly the 2nd client requirement says each apartment needs a 1m high window 1m above FFL - I think this means you would need to replace all the existing windows in the current facade, so my request would be to relax this is existing windows can be used as is. Secondly, I would suggest further geotech info is gained so that you can look to use any reserve capacity in the existing footings.

Youve done this on the computer, but in the exam you have to hand sketch your concepts isnt it?

Section 2 of this question, that does calcs and drawings for this concept? Or do you mean the next question for this exam?
