These motors are in Australian 110s like mine. Highly reliable. Very fuel efficient. Buckets of torque. But loud and rough. I've rebuilt mine. Balanced the rotating assy. Made a big difference. Also. Drop off that front cover and line up all the gears. Yes. While the motors in the pump can not a bugger. But not that bad. I've done it 4 times.

In line filter good job, and transparent for easy checking. Same here on Mazda 3.5slt but all opposite side. Now. A big drain pan for messy jobs. Take a plastic fuel tank off old discovery and saw it horizontally along roughly as the seam is but keep the filler neck as a handle. It catches most stuff for sure and fits lovely under the front of a land rover. A bit of a nuisance to tip empty but a cleaner floor for sure. J

2:53 Prepping mine for MOT soon, Split boot on the steering drop arm ball joint. Just be a few mins to put a new boot on for now. nearly 2 hours later. Finally sorted. What a faff on lol Though a few tricks learnt, will be far faster next...

@@BritannicaRestorations I wanted to only do the very quick option of swapping the boot. But ended up with a free ball joint and no way to get the nut to come off. Then after that. Back on. More a lack of tools. And also this tool trying. Not a job for just a spanner and a hammer at least.

the pumps are way easier to pull in and out in a lift cab truck thats for sure! Oil filter - I had the single element type then swapped to a single cartridge type, some have the twin filter setup. You can get different setups from KLR automotive if your struggling to find that small filter locally. Cant wait to see the exhaust build.

What a balls aching job! I should have mentioned why I put the pump on a bungee strap - it was, so I could move it a little up and down to get it in place

@@BritannicaRestorations And it's the weight of the thing too. I've watched you strip and rebuild gearboxes and transfer cases not quite realising how heavy they are until I got that used gearbox and t box, and tried to get the thing in the car!

Also you might only have to do it once in a lifetime if you run good filtration and clean diesel. Don’t forget Mike fitted this as a second hand unit if I remember rightly. And I can tell you fleet trucks don’t get looked after or driven as sympathetically as your average enthusiasts Landrover.
@BritannicaRestorations

Yeah, the rust in the filter must have come out of the original truck as I fitted a new tank 18 months before the engine was fitted

You likely put the pump exactly as it came off, however I believe the 4BD1t's are 10deg BTDC prior to 1988 and 13deg BTDC after 1988. Maybe something to check if it's not running as sweetly after it goes back together.

It should go back in the same - the fine adjust is just behind the mounting flange on slots which were not touched

A bit of a tale on 300tdi reliability… yes they are one of the most reliable simple diesels ever fitted to passenger vehicles But.. I used to work for a national haulage firm back in the late 1990’s we had a fleet of daf 7.5t (6bt Cummins, very similar to the 4bt Isuzu) and ERF EC11’s (Cummins) Now the daf were flogged without mercy day in day out on multi drop work by very stressed drivers. Warm up from cold.. nope idled after a run nope switched off and started 50-150 times a day Yep. Serviced on time? Not really. What did the mechanics at night do to make a little extra once the 6bts were serviced up? Fix 300tdis that were in many discoveries back in the day and they were the owners ‘babies’ So apologies to @Garypoulton7311 but whenyou’ve been there you have to tell it like it is.

The Isuzu is a much more reliable engine than the 300tdi, if someone had made a cast iron head for the 300tdi it would have been perfect, but chasing the bottom line has buggeredthe best yet again

As good as the 300tdi is (done over 160000 miles in mine and literally not a bother) I was however very carefull with driving, servicing and coolant. The Isuzu is a true industrial quality engine and in a different league. They can take the sort of abuse for thousands of hours that would see a 300tdi shit itself in very short order

300tdi is a great engine. But these isuzus are just unkillable and will probably outlive humanity even when abused and neglected

This is a 1990 engine - compression is within 10%, never had the head off as far as I can see. These engines can be comfortably tweaked to 200hp with a pump adjustment and a 3-inch exhaust… Some US chaps have had them to 500hp, but they do not last too long! lol! These engines have been fitted into all sorts of machinery - forklifts, diggers, tractors etc
