One of my favorite behind the scenes bits about this movie is how good to the kids the actors playing Pennywise and the bullies were. You see them after takes of intense scenes asking the kids playing the Losers Club if they were ok. It's always great seeing actors respecting each other like that.

That's why Bills dad gives up on finding Georgie, why Beverly's dad is so mean to her, why they put lost posters over other kid's lost posters, why the adults don't help the kids when being bullied, why no one has called the FBI to help solve all the missing cases, and why people leaving town forget what happens there.

I agree completely! That was such an important part of his character and the reason he alone remembered Pennywise while everyone else forgot. Ben already had his own great character arc. Taking the only black kid's defining characteristics and passions, and sideling him so a white character now has double storylines that he doesn't need is so unfair.

Something I love about the book is that the stories of the kids and the adults are happening at the same time, one chapter will be in the past, the next in the present, so you have no idea where the story is going. I understand why both the TV movie and this version decided to present the story the way they did but I do feel like something is lost when you see the entire childhood part of the story followed by the adult side.

I agree. In my opinion IT should always have been at least a single-season TV show to give us everything as opposed to just a two-parter. I feel like that would have been good for showing us a lot of things we didn't get to see in both adaptations, not just from the main characters' perspectives but from others who encountered Pennywise throughout the history of Derry as well.

@@billwenham I think the director said he wanted to a 6 hour super cut of the two movies and reincorporate some deleted scenes, but unfortunately that’s the studio and the distributers decision to make and not the directors. I honestly think both versions of IT are fantastic. The old tv mini-series one benefits hugely from having Tim Curry in it.. he elevates anything he's in to a work of art. And that takes nothing away from how good Bill Skarsgård was in his version of the roll. It from 2017 is a lot scarier in the typical terms people think of horror films in but I agree that the old tv version has a special sort of horror all it's own.

@@codiehaleytWell, design-wise the Tim Curry makeup is more accurate to the book, but Bill Skarsgard doesn’t seem human. They better sold that Pennywise is a shape-shifter in this new one. Everyone remembers the clown from the original because he doesn’t take as many other forms, probably because of budget. My only gripe with the Bill Skarsgard design and performance is that there is nothing alluring about the new Pennywise from the child’s perspective. Like the original Georgie was already pretty dumb (even for a five-year-old) to humor talking to a sewer clown. But at least with Tim Curry, he’s funny and pleasant and very comedic. He could pass as a human being in a clown costume that’s just a serial killer. But the new Georgie has to be partially braindead to spend even one moment talking to the shadowy clown with Satan make-up, an enlarged head, and glowing eyes 😂

@@codiehaleyt I wouldn't say that. I'd say it's about as accurate as Curry's performance but they focused on different aspects of book Pennywise (both great performances - no argument there). From what I remember he acts more like a clown in the book in his pennywise form but a more depraved and dark humoured one. I remember when he first meets Eddie he says "Tell your friends I am the last of a dying race...The only survivor of a dying planet. I have come to rob all the women...rape all the men...and learn to do the Peppermint Twist!"

One of my favorite things about this version of IT is just showing that Pennywise/It is just always watching, always present. The old lady in the library, the people in the car as Henry was carving into Ben, the mural as they were patching Ben up, the kid's TV show that only the kids and people under It's influence can see, the clown at the festival, etc.

One interesting thing they did in this film was sneak Pennywise into a TON of the shots, even when you think he's not there. He's lurking in the corners as lighthearted conversations happen, or in artwork and even under objects.

@andreaszeintl8206 yeah idk how the one with children is somehow much deeper, mature, and terrifying, and the one with the adults is too full of comedic or melodramatic moments. I know the miniseries wasn't much better with the tone but that was cause it was a TV broadcast, these movies were able to be rated R and had that much creative freedom. I rewatch part 1 all the time but have rarely touched part 2. The only issue I have is that Mike is hardly a character in part 1, in they gave his original character plot to Ben instead, but then Mike has a huge part in the second movie which matches to the original. Odd odd creative decision there.

Back in the late 60's/early 70's there was a famous kid's film called "The Red Balloon", about a balloon that followed around a lonely boy and was his friend for a day, before floating off. Stephen King took that cute idea and made it Twisted!! LOL!! This movie shows how the whole town of Derry is under Pennywise's influence, where an undercurrent of cruel behavior is everywhere!

What I found to make this film even more amazing is the attention to detail in backgrounds throughout this whole film. Penny-wise is disguised as different people if you look closely. That old lady in the library...that was him. He's hidden in other scenes too. I love hidden details like that 😮 makes rewatching it even more interesting!

Fun fact from someone who's read through "IT"at least twice(it's a huge book, but I really loved it.): Pennywise's powers are more than just shapeshifting. IT can also alter places, create smells or hide things from people. Georgie smells the scent of fries, funnel cakes and even animal droppings when Pennywise asks him if he can smell the circus. You can also notice how Pennywise's eyes go from yellow to blue(which Georgie sees as looking like both his mothers and Bill's eyes, which is why he isn't afraid of him as he should be). 4:35 And he did! (Bill Skarsgard, lol). Book Mike's parents are actually alive(and are one of the only parents(other than Richie's)that are not abusive(physically or mentally). Mike's dad had his own encounter with It, though he only tells Mike on his deathbed. 11:33 Pennywise makes the people of Derry apathetic to the horrible things happening with its influence, making it much easier for it to feed. Patrick Hockstetter is one of the characters they could never do the real story of in any adaptation(that or the scene with the Loser's after they first beat It...less said about that, the better...) Hockstetter murders his little brother in the crib because he's afraid that if he exists, Patrick won't. He also murders small animals by suffocating them in a fridge in a junkyard. However, he's such a sociopath, It doesn't know what form to take to scare him, so it creates flying leeches to attack him. Hockstetter sees Pennywise as something shifting and strange as it begins to eat him. The poster on the wall behind the Losers when they are helping Ben has an image of a newspaper talking about the Bradley Gang being killed. The gang was put down by a posse of Derry Citizens, who were riled up thanks to Pennywise during one of his returns after hibernating. In between scenes, an image of his face appears in the wheel well of the car watching the kids, but it's subtle. 28:53, classic miniseries Pennywise statue. Beverly's father of the book isn't a predator. He's a jerk, but he does genuinely love Beverly, he's just got ingrained jerkass traits. He attempts to force himself on her the day they fight It, but Beverly says aloud she knows its the clown manipulating him. While they don't say it as explicitly as they should, the power of belief from the kids(and some kind of outside being assisting them)is said to give them abilities that make them dangerous to it. The scene where Bill uses the empty bolt pistol is the one where it's most clear, as he believes its loaded, and so it hurts Pennywise.

The "outside force helping them" is "the Shining". Stephen Kings books are all connected. The bad guys are essentially the same entity taking different forms. The good guys all have "the Shining" in some form. This is just a summation. Its alot more complicated than that if you wanna do some research.

One of the things you get in the book is how Pennywise amplifies violent impulses into their most extreme expressions. Being mildly angry explodes into murderous rage. Al Marsh, who is an overly possessive and abusive father becomes a sexual predator. The whole town becomes a character in that respect. The miniseries was made for TV--it was okay. This is better but still nothing compared to the book. If I had my way, I would have turned it into three movies, starting with the town's violent history as Mike discovers, starting with his first conversation with Albert Carson. There was the Kitchener Iron Works--the Bradley Gang--the fire at the Black Spot--Claude Heroux---the murder of Adrian Mellon--ending it with Mike making the phone calls. Then in the second movie, you go to the kids. The brilliant thing that King frequently does is how he blends supernatural horrors with human level horrors. His human monsters are every bit as terrifying as as the supernatural ones, if not more so.

For a cast filled with great kid actors, Sophia Lillis is just incredible in every scene. Bev is pretty badass in this version and I like that her determination is why Pennywise deadlights her first. He tries to cut the leader from the group and it backfires on him spectacularly!

While filming, the production team didn't let any of the kid actors see Pennywise at all at first. The scene where all the Kids go into the house and Eddie breaks his arm is the very first time all of kids seen Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise, so their reactions were genuine in a way.

In the clown room 28:44 if you look closely you can see a mannequin of the original Tim Curry Pennywise standing to the left. Nice little Easter egg homage. Another strange bit of trivia is that Tim Curry suffers from coulrophobia (the intense fear of clowns) and insisted that there be no reflective surfaces on set when he was in makeup. I'm not sure but I would imagine that this included covering the mirrors in the makeup trailer as well. He has talked about this in many interviews.

The two Pennywises are so unique and you’re right that it’s hard to compare them. Modern Pennywise is absolutely terrifying in a traditional sense but OG Pennywise is terrifying because of how “normal” he seems. Tim Curry is so undeniably unsettling while looking like a run of the mill clown that it’s scary in its own way. I love both versions but the modern movies get the edge in my book because they fixed the weird spider ending. Lol

Cool fact. The contortionist part wasn't CGI. Bill Sarsgaard can do that on his own. Also, Pennywise's lazy eye was Bill's natural doing. They were going to do it with FX, but Bill said I can do that. I am torn as to which I prefer. I will always love Tim Curry's portrayal, but I found Bill especially creepy, and actually had a few moments of fear.

I thought the 90s version was much more cozy, but I suppose it depends on when you first say it. The racism in this one makes it unwatchable for me, which is a shame because the kids are great.

The racism there because IT takes real life horrors, as well as nightmares & amplifies them. That's why the parents & townspeople are all so bad, or at least uncaring & negligent if not outright doing bad things to their kids.

Pennywise is supposed to lure kids in, the clown form should be bait. Curry got that mix with humor and terror. New one is just scary and scarier. Though the kids in the remake did a great job.

I think all around the CGI improved all of Pennywise's alter forms, but that when it came to the actual clown form, Tim Curry still was the best, and what is strange is that Bill Skarsgard did a good job, Tim Curry's performance was just that strong

I love how Steven King used a version of faerie Glamour for part of Pennywise's powers. Glamour is commonly thought of as illusion but it's more than that. A Glamour is an illusion that is real while it's active. So you can eat Glamoured food, for example. And a Glamour of a weapon can hurt. But it's not real real.
