⚠️ WARNING: SAD THINGS HAPPENING TO POOR LITTLE CHILDREN, *CLOWNS!!!* 🤡
Happy ALMOST HALLOWEEN!! Let's kick things off this week and celebrate with a classic villain, Pennywise The Dancing Clown! I don't think I had a fear of clowns before this, but I just might have one now 😩
HAPPY REACTOBER! 🎃 👻 👽 Throughout the month of October, I'll be culturing myself and taking on as many horror film reactions as I can! Welcome to our fifth installment, where we watched IT (2017)
In spite of the fact that this actually fricking terrified me (I really need to stop watching these horror films with my back to the door) I've gotta say, I'm genuinely glad I watched this one! I love the coming of age story, the relationships, & the message of friendship. I'm half-tempted to watch the next Chapter to see how Pennywise strikes back to haunt their adult selves...but I may need a breather after this one 😆
Happy early Halloween!! We're in the home stretch of REACTOBER! 🖤 🧡

You were right about the painting, Catherine. The producer had a Modigliani in the house as a child and was terrified of it so she used a similar style painting in the film.

Pennywise is a tricky character, because It is this extra dimensional entity that’s existed before the beginning of time essentially in a different world, a different dimension. Some time in the past, he came to earth and began hibernating. When he awakened, he started feeding off humans, preferably children. Pennywise is one of the many shapes It takes to lure in and feed off the children.

You should definitely read the book. Why are these bullies homicidal? Pennywise feeds on and amplifies emotions like fear and anger. So being angry with someone can quickly turn into a blinding, murderous rage. Jealously can become sexual violence, etc. Plus, in the books, Henry and his friends were always pretty bad--Henry was pretty damned crazy. Patrick, however, was a true psychopath--torturing little animals before working up to people kind of psycho. One other thing to point out--there are a lot of kids in King's books. One of the things that King explores is that childhood and the kid world isn't all that safe. And that's true in a lot of his books. But he also explores the magic of a band of misfits who come together in just a perfect way--where otherwise ordinary folks do exceptional things.

@@brettgoucher8783 I won't argue that--though IT has a special place in my heart. I read it when it first came out in 1985, and it was my very first King novel. I keep thinking of things to add. This really was a great reaction & outro to get my brain whirring like this. Re: Child actors being traumatized by working on something horrible. Many, if not most, children who take up acting seriously as hobby or profession, from community theater to feature film, have probably taken it up as a response to trauma, neglect, rejection, abuse, etc. That's why i was there and many midnight coffee confession sessions told me the same was true for every other theater kid i knew. When you're so broken that you don't like you, or your real life is too much or too painful, the lure of being someone else for a little while is like cupcakes to a fat kid. So it's likely the kids acting in this movie weren't that traumatized by it. They've likely seen worse. I mean, i was in a play about Vietnam in high school (extracurricular), age 16, wherein my character commits seppuku by M16 near the play's finale. Not only was i not bothered by this from readthru to rehearsal to performance, in order to prepare, the director and i watched that masterful Vincent D'Onofrio scene in Full Metal Jacket (you know the one) about 20 times, pausing to discuss between each. Kid actors can usually handle far more than you'd expect because they've probably been handling worse for quite some time.

You really, really need to do reactions to the Netflix series “The Haunting of Hill House”. It’s a masterpiece, really scary, but soooo much more than that, it’s a beautifully told, heartbreaking story of family drama, grief, and love. It’s about a family, with 5 kids, and it’s told in little bits, set “now”, when the kids are grown up and in their 20s/30s, and “then”, when they were 6 to 13-ish years old, and moved into Hill House. It’s simply one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. 10 episodes. Hope you can find time for it. I think you’d love it, despite the scares.

You were so afraid not because you're weak. You were so afraid because your empathy is so strong. And OMG the book is so much worse. Not just because of your imagination. There are things explicitly written in the book so awful that they don't even touch on them in the movies or the miniseries. Plus at least one thing the director or producer or somebody would probably go to prison for. I'm speaking here of *that* scene... iykyk

In answer to one of your post watch comments: non of the child actors saw Bill Skarsgaard as Pennywise until it was time for their characters to see him

Woooooaaaaah thank GOD!! Hopefully that means they were all just able to have a good time together until cameras started rolling…but I’m sure it added to their fear!

@CatherineLaSalle for the scene where Pennywise came out the fridge and went after Eddie; first thing Bill Skarsgaard did was check if the Jack Grazer (Eddies actor) was OK.

As strange as this may sound, I made a friend in a rock fight. I started by hitting him, and he could see my concern, next thing was we were handling together as friends.

I kept wondering why you kept looking over your back. I figured someone was in the room with you. It'd explain why that Darth Vader picture behind you kept moving.

First time watching you. You did ok. Don't call yourself weak, "weak" is a term relative in many respects. We all have Stephen King to thank for. If you're watching any other horror films, watch it with someone. Just a suggestion. Please watch "Shawshank Redemption". Not a horror thing, but listed on any top ten best movies of all time. Trust me, you'll like it.
