I am a software engineer of 23+ years and I am wanting to transform myself into an architect with an emphasis on the cloud. Most of the architectural background I have is with software , but I would like to transform myself into a cloud centered architect role. With all the massive layoffs in tech sector and saturation of the software industry, I do worry about long term prospects of the stability of this career. I also do not really enjoy software engineering as a job and have a much more passion for the Ops/Systems/Cloud side of things in the corporate environment. Unfortunately, my background is much heavier with software than on the systems side.

You could always learn to become a cloud architect. I was a nurse practitioner practicing internal medicine and moved into an architecture role within 6 months over 25 years ago. It’s not your background, it’s your willingness to learn. We have helped many software engineers become cloud architects. We have helped retrain cloud engineers to become cloud architects. We have taken people with no tech background and gotten them great cloud architect jobs too. Just do what you love. And know you can do anything. If you want to learn how to become a cloud architect and what to learn please attend the free webinar. my.demio.com/ref/01ppStEkIUVxsXXj

Thanks! That’s great. How would you even understand the real life constraints if you don’t know how to code/debug/test/deploy/configure a solution?

While coding, debugging, deploying, and configuring are valuable skills, these job responsibilities usually belong to some other technical roles. As cloud architects, our primary focus is on understanding the real-life constraints by engaging directly with customers and utilizing our business acumen. Cloud architects are more concerned with the overall design and strategic decisions rather than getting deeply involved in technical issues. Their role is to create high-level architectural plans and ensure they align with business objectives. Cloud Architect is about orchestrating solutions, not getting lost in the technical weeds.

@@GoCloudArchitectsI see, thank you for your expertise! Maybe a title like „Cloud Business Architect“ or such could be more descriptive. How large would a business have to be to need a „Cloud Architect“? Personally right now I am learning more about (implementing) distributed architectures. This means learning and implementing Containers, Kubernetes, Micro Services, CI/C and Cloud. I am modernizing a monolith. For this I picked out some modules which I first want to see modularized, but not yet extracted into a micro service. At the same time I want to modernize the deployment as containers and hosting in our private cloud on Kubernetes, instead of using lots of virtual machines. The next step would be to move some modules into more manageable micro services and to support a public cloud provider. This is all technical and the engineers here all don’t have expertise in these fields yet. My goal is to learn and to guide the team. To move into a more business focused role sounds inspiring to me. I especially enjoy improving the way we work. Improving processes. Improving how we treat each other as humans. Reducing stress. Think „New Work“. Thanks again! Your YT channel is a gem!💎
