I left my sales career behind to learn IT. After my certificate at a community college for network cloud specialist should I pass the azure dev cert instead of the architect cert? I do not want to deal with business again directly. I'll happily take my chances with engineer roles.
@GoCloudArchitects2 күн бұрын
What are your goals? That’s the starting point. Please note that the Azure solutions architect expert has nothing to do with architecture and it’s all related to engineering. So if your goal is cloud engineering it’s much better than the developer associate. The question is, what are your goals? For example, if you wanted to be a cloud engineer You might start with the azure solutions architect expert, then learn Python, then develop strong line administration skills, then develop strong infrastructure as code skills, and then learning some DevOps By comparison, if you wanted to be a software developer I would tell you that the solutions architect expert is a good fundamental certification Then learn how to become a software developer And then potentially take the developer associate after that. Please note you will not learn how to be a developer by any developer certification So you will have to learn those skills on your So it’s all about knowing your goals and then building a plan to get there.
@florentinog.88702 күн бұрын
Correct, my goal is cloud engineer. I see you have laid out the stages for it, thank you. I was under the assumption because architect was in the cert name. I was advised to take the administration cert plus either the developer, or security to prepare for the solutions expert. If devops is needed in the later steps to become an engineer I definitely need to figure out which of those last two certs would benefit me better.

Mike, I am a huge fan of Russ. This conversation resonates deeply with me, and I am grateful for the insights you shared. There is a great need to understand the value and importance of an architect in a business while distinguishing it from the technical role of an engineer.

"Most people come to me with the wrong skills" Hah, the level of hubris here. Do you seriously believe the jobs you're hiring for are so special and require so much sophisticated understanding than any random couldn't learn to do all of the tasks involved in about 2 weeks?
@GoCloudArchitects3 күн бұрын
What do you mean two weeks? Our architect training programs are over 1000 hours. This was a free certification we provided for the community. We also stated the CISSP and the CCSP are great security fundamentals certifications. As they provide a great intro to security. We also discussed that even the CISSP, CISM, CCSP together are only 20 to 30% of the actual skills needed by an architecture. We also described in this program all of the other skills needed outside the certification. So I’m curious where you got two weeks from ad this being enough for an architect.
@tuckvison3 күн бұрын
@GoCloudArchitects Actual architects only use like 3 skills in their everyday routine tasks. You type text, click checkboxes in UIs and type emails. The specific content of that text or checkbox clicking varies by company but you never use more than 5% of the actual knowledge obtained in the cert and that knowledge can easily be obtained without the cert. Selective hiring is just pointless classgating. The jobs aren't that hard, they're just hoarded by ladderpullers who pretend you have to be a technological prodigy to complete the work effectively.
@tuckvison2 күн бұрын
@@GoCloudArchitects Do you actually know what an architect does on a day-to-day basis? Literally every technology they interact with has a manual and can be easily googled in 2 seconds. These certifications don't test for realistic situations because you aren't allowed to use Google in the testing lab. They literally just expect you to pointlessly memorize stuff that you will forget in a month once you have the cert anyways. Any random off the street can click the checkboxes in a GUI according to a manual man. It's not hard and it doesn't make you a genius to be able to do it.
@tuckvison2 күн бұрын
For example: How many IOPS does an o1 drive provide? Completely idiotic question to make somebody memorize because you can look it up and have a chart in front of you with every storage capacity, I/O speed, number of concurrent attachments etc. in 4 seconds. Having it memorized is a waste of valuable labor you could have spent building something substantial.

Awesome video. Architecture is so different from engineering because architects are more business oriented and the engineers are on the implementation end.

Thank you. Your right. The main focus for the architect is a business outcome, the main focus for the engineer is the tech. We need both and they are equally important.
@goldricemaki4 күн бұрын
Just to clarify, an architect's job is to make sure the non-functional requirements are met. Non-functional requirements are the "-ilities", like Security, Availability, Cost, and Performance. While some are business related, not all are. We always had the architects focus on the "how" a system works, and the engineers focused on the "what".

Great video Mike! 👍 The cybersecurity architect is a critical role that leads others in the process of securing the organization’s systems and determining the ways in which the organization would respond to incidents. Considering that data is a very valuable and sensitive resource and the fact that major security incidents are quite common nowadays (e.g. the fact that it was recently reported that foreign hackers had access to AT&T’s systems), having an effective security strategy is a must, and will require the initiative and guidance of a good cybersecurity architect in large enterprise environments.
@GoCloudArchitects5 күн бұрын
You’re absolutely right. Cybersecurity architects play a pivotal role in safeguarding sensitive data and shaping an organization's security strategy. Incidents like the AT&T breach emphasize just how critical this role is in today’s environment. Appreciate you highlighting its importance!

Thanks for this insightful discussion on CVs. As I am with 20+ years of experience trying to transition into a Cloud Architect role, I could relate deeply to both candidates. My CV, like theirs, has been heavily focused on technical skills, with less emphasis on leadership and business-related qualities. This video provided so many valuable pointers on how to highlight those overlooked aspects, helping me rethink how I present myself. Actually, my CV doesn't pass through the recruiter's initial screening system. This might be due to the same reasons you mentioned. Companies are looking for the value someone can bring, how they work in a team, and how they motivate others.This gave me actionable ideas to improve it. Thanks again for such a practical and motivating session.

Very good video, but I disagree on the scope of the role. An EA should not be leading projects. They should be focusing on connecting business strategy to technology investments. It’s a strategic role. When you start dealing with projects that’s a Solution Architect’s job
@GoCloudArchitects10 күн бұрын
We are in agreement. Although I think we have different definitions of projects which is the confusion. When we say leading projects we are referring to an architecture project. Initiating the project. Speaking with the C-suite,learning the business architecture, rearchitecting business processes, building the architecture team. Leading the architecture team through design etc. managing the stakeholders during an architectural design, etc This is what we typically do in an architecture project. We are not referring to leading the build out or anything related to operations.

Dear Mike...like all your video, this video is very insightful but my question is this....when you started your career did you start with CCIE? How about Expert level certs that requires an associate level cert as prerequisite? Or are those looking to switch careers not within the scope of your target audience?? Or don't associate level cert help you build a good foundation?
@GoCloudArchitects11 күн бұрын
Hi. Well let’s work on this assumption - employer hire for skills not certifications and I’ll tell you a personal story. In the beginning of my career, I took a CCNA, CCNP and a CCDP. My past career was in healthcare. So networking was a new career. Even with these certifications, I did not know enough to be hired and I was not hired. Then I learned what hiring managers were looking for and I learned those skills. Most of those skills were on the CCIE exam. Within months I was hired and a few months later I was CCIE certified. In my case I should have just started with the CCIE After the CCIE was is when I started to learn networking. I spent the rest of my life learning networking. Now it’s not a problem if someone picks a career, gets and associate, professional, and expert exams all in the same field. And also learns the skills for their career. This person excels. The problem is when someone gets 3-6 associate level certifications and they are all in different fields they generally don’t have the skills for any job. For example an AWS solutions architect associate, DevOps associate, developer associate, SysOps associate and a cloud practitioner. Now they have an intro level in many people’s careers but usually not enough yo get any job. Instead if the person picked one specialty and mastered those skills they could have a great career. From a manager perspective lack of focus is not something we look for in people we hire. But I ask you this - if you needed to hire a surgeon for a family member would you hire the expert surgeon whose life was spent mastering surgery. Or an airplane pilot, lawyer, teacher and part time surgeon. So I like to see expert portfolios as that’s what I like to hire. People with discipline and focus who I believe can do a good job. And it’s what I have seen help our clients get the best results in their careers. Mastering their career and only their career.

How do companies view LinkedIn learning and coursera certifications?
@GoCloudArchitects11 күн бұрын
Hi Anthony. As a rule company’s don’t care about any certificate. They care about the person’s competency, capability, attitude, communication, skills, leadership, skills, and emotional intelligence. In general, a certificate of completion is meaningless. Now if it’s a big certificate like an MBA or PhD or something difficult to achieve them it has value. So there’s nothing wrong with doing some additional LinkedIn training in addition to one’s professional development. Gaining knowledge is always great. But I definitely wouldn’t be any corsara or or LinkedIn certifications on my resume. I also wouldn’t list other easy to do or achieve things such as typing, attending a four hour seminar or anything that doesn’t look substantial

Yep! Professional-level certifications from cloud providers are definitely not enough to gain the necessary skills that an architect must have. Although they confirm the recipient’s familiarity with the provider’s services to a thorough level of understanding, they do not provide the proper training in terms of the ability to work with teams and give presentations just to mention a few.
@GoCloudArchitects13 күн бұрын
Great point! Certifications give you the ‘what’ of cloud services, but it’s the ‘how’-like working with teams and delivering impactful presentations-that really sets architects apart.
