Great Job Ivan ,really enjoyed your video. Thanks for the explanation on how to interrupt the MAP DATA PID, makes sense now, at initial ignition on the CPU reads the MAP sensor prior to start and reads ~ 28 IN HG, and then after engine starts reads the MAP DATA PID and and subtracts it from the 28 IN HG to get the overall engine vacuum of 28 - 8 = ~ 20 IN HG , normal vacuum reading for an engine at idle. Real Cool !!

Had two Saturns (both 5-speeds), loved them both. Easy to work on and were reliable but basic transportation. If my current ride suddenly had to be replaced, I'd totally buy one of these if I could find a low mileage 5-speed in good condition. All of the S-series engines burn oil as they age...GM didn't put oil drainback holes in the pistons, so I guess that causes problems with the piston rings over time.

The 1.9 Liter engine is famous for burning oil but I was fortunate enough to own one of the good ones that not only ran great but consumed about a quart every 3,000 miles or so, which is quite acceptable. I suspect that most of these engines were not worn in right when they were new or suffered some other form of neglect by their owners.

I wonder if they still sell that screen/gasket that GM used to use on the 4.3s that goes under the EGR valve to keep large pieces of carbon off the pintal? Also, when fuel trims are that far out of whack, the ECM has to re-learn unless you reset it.

That makes sense, since it was dumping so much fuel into the engine...and the rings aren't good, so some of that fuel would leak past into the crank case. incidentally, even though the oil is fairly fresh from all that topping off, the filter will still be filling with contaminants, so I'd guess that should have been changed some time ago.
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics7 жыл бұрын
Now I wonder if all that raw gas helped to loosen up the piston rings? :)
@aussiebloke6097 жыл бұрын
Hmm...it would make sense, since gasoline is a pretty good solvent. Add that to the friction against the bore working the rings up and down in their lands, and it seems possible, I guess.

Change oil and filter. Use full synthetic lightweight as possible, Add 1 quart kerosene, to overfill by 1 quart. Stick up idle to 2k. Add 1 quart ATF and 1 quart acetone to half tank 91 octane. Run till fuel gone. While running- spray water in intake, about 1 gallon should be enough. All of this will deglaze the cylinders, free the rings, allow to reseal. Drain hot overnight, new filter. Refill with thicker synthetic, to keep clean. 1 quart Marvel + 2 tanks of fuel, all done.

No, not "my idea" just Old School method of cleaning out gunk. On modern engines- rings rarely go "bad". they just get clogged up in the grooves, stick, and allow blowby. Same for valves. Cheap oil, infrequent changes, stop & go traffic, ethanol gas- all add up over time.

And use the engine for braking frequently. People don't do that anymore, When engine braking it will create a vacuum in the cylinders and lift the rings allowing the gunk under them to clean out. Kids today think hammer down to clean out but they packing more in, sure get he rpms up there BUT use those rpms to get negative pressure in the cylinders I recently a bought a 98 mountaineer w/5.0 180k that was using excessive amounts of oil, I used this process and couple months later no more oil usage. I do a lot of highway driving and everytime I exit, I pull the automatic down to 2nd gear at 75mph. I never did put any additives in to get to this point, just engine braking

It's running richer because of the already burnt oxygen "inert gas" that is being introduced back into the intake system causing the fuel trims we see. Because the EGR valve was stuck open. So basically it's filling the void where ambient air would be.

Those Linear EGR valves GM uses are notorious for sticking; that's why they have that torx head thing on 'em! They're intended to be "serviced," as it were. Occasionally, doing so will cause the PCM to freak out, though. All GM vehicles with that Linear EGR design have an "EGR Position Relearn" procedure buried in the scantool somewhere, but in a pinch, disconnecting the battery overnight will force it to relearn as well. ;)

Ok, so I my educated guess is that because the EGR is stuck open, it’s telling the computer that there is not enough fuel because of all the exhaust gases running back into the system, the O2 sensor is saying that there is so much air going past it, therefore creating a rich condition.

Hayward's Automotive Can you please explain about MAP Sensor? as Ivan said 28 inHg atmospheric and Good running Engine should be around 21 inHg while the actual reading was around 8 inHg in this video; what was the cause?
@haywardsautomotive61567 жыл бұрын
MAP sensors read Manifold Absolute Pressure so when you check it with engine off it'll read Barometric Pressure/Pressure Altitude and when it's running you take the pressure reading from the scan tool & subtract it from the baro pressure and you'll get the manifold vacuum. Manifold vacuum at idle for a healthy engine is 17-21 " Hg and you need to take into account Pressure Altitude which will affect manifold vacuum. The higher the elevation the lower the vacuum & less air density and vice versa near sea level. EGR into the intake lowers the vacuum similar to opening the throttle so the ECM provides more fuel which is why the fuel trims STFT & LTFT were negative trying to correct the excessive fuel. B/c of the excessive fuel it contaminated the oil which kept his fuel trims elevated until he changed the oil and then his fuel trims returned to normal. Hope this helps!

I would check the undercarriage of both of those if you keep either of them. Saturns tend to rust out on the front subframe and also where the rear trailing arms bolt to the body. That Mercury Mystique aka Ford Contour is a pile, sorry but I worked on both of these models and if the Saturn is in ok shape on the body I would keep that over the Mercury. The S-series had problems with the piston rings sticking, you could try GM piston ring cleaner or some other substitute to see if they would free up. When you snapped the throttle and the EGR did not open, I believe the PCM has to see vehicle speed for it to open it.

Bit puzzled about question "Why does this car run so RICH with the EGR open?". ST Fuel trim was -50, so ECM is taking fuel away. I would think that reason is that there is way less oxygen in the intake gas mixture. With EGR open, half of the air in the intake is coming from exhaust and does not have oxygen any more. Your data showed that oxygen sensor went active as fuel trim s started to adjust. To get the amount of oxygen right in the exhaust, with only half of the amount of oxygen in the intake, you need to take half (-50%) of the fuel away. So the engine was running "right" but the gas mixture in the intake was wrong. It had only about 10% oxygen in it. As half of it was coming from open EGR and contained very little oxygen. This is based on -50% fuel trim. Thus the power was also half and engine was struggling to run. Just my $0.02
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics7 жыл бұрын
See Hayward's Automotive explanation in a comment below. The key to the extreme rich condition is the MAP reading :)
@jannepo7 жыл бұрын
I was thinking about it, but I was thinking that if on a speed-density engine with MAP sensor you add air to intake side, ECM will see a lower intake manifold vacuum, add fuel and engine RPM will go up, but it will run fine and fuel trims are ok as manifold pressure matches with amount on fuel and oxygen sensor. MAP engine can not tell difference where the air is coming from. If for example idle adjusting air valve gets stuck, engine runs just fine, higher rpm but no problem. But if there is only half of the oxygen and same MAP reading, default injection chart (ST and LT trim = 0) does not match at all, default amount of fuel does not have enough oxygen to burn -> O2 sensor sees rich -> trim goes to -50% until O2 sensor is happy. This was a MAP engine?
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics7 жыл бұрын
Yup that is correct. Manifold pressure is elevated, but it's not fresh air coming in, but exhaust gases, which contain no oxygen to help burn the extra fuel being injected. At the same time, even LESS fresh air is being drawn in than would be on a normal idle, due to the same elevated manifold pressure. Almost a snowball effect.
@jannepo7 жыл бұрын
Yep, its even worse. At 6:58 you had 20 in vacuum at idle, with a stuck open EGR. Which is about normal vacuum, so ECM had driven the idle air valve towards the closed position as the intake vacuum was at normal level -> most of the gas mixture in intake is coming from exhaust. At same time O2 sensor 1 still shows 800 mV at -50% ST fuel trim, very oxygen available. But the mind spinning thing is that that mixture was almost the right one. In a sense, not rich but lean on oxygen :-) :-) Great video! Thanks again Ivan!
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics7 жыл бұрын
No, the MAP reports absolute absolute PRESSURE, not vacuum. This confused me for a minute in the video too. So when scan data reads "20inHg", the VACUUM you would see on a mechanical gauge is [28.7inHg - 20inHg = 8.7inHg vacuum], which is a terrible reading at idle! That is the exact reason for over-fueling! As you can see, after the car was fixed the MAP reads 8.0inHg at idle, which is a good PRESSURE reading. Manifold VACUUM in this case would be [28.7inHg - 8.0inHg = 20.7inHg] which is a good vacuum reading at idle :)

Easy fix and can last a long time but wd40 doesn't clean it all that well. A little carb cleaner would have cleaned it in seconds almost completely without any of the stuff you had to do. I should know because I've done it myself

oh yeah sorry I got confused..."C" for "Coupe" right?
@Jonathan112257 жыл бұрын
exactly ! hah
@chrisfreemesser7 жыл бұрын
SC = coupe, SW=wagon, SL=sedan. 1=base model with SOHC, 2=higher-end model with DOHC engine. Therefore, you have an SC2 there

AutoTechDale it wouldn't be a bad idea to donate it to a school auto class.

Those fuel trims still aren't good... They should stay close to 0 while driving and the engine being revved also
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics7 жыл бұрын
It was still re-learning after the oil change. The TOTAL trim (STFT + LTFT) was in fact pretty close to zero :)
@markborrmannjr7 жыл бұрын
Ok.... From what I was seeing you possibly had a partially sticking injector and at least 1 cylendar was getting to much fuel, which would explain the stuck egr and the extremely negative fuel trims... But if you didn't show the entire fix and they went normal after you stopped recording the video I wouldn't know that ya know.... Lol... Hopefully you decide to share video til the end so we can see things like that, lol... It's always nice to see the fix ya know.... You are doing good videos though, so don't think I feel your not or anything... I've learned a few things from ya already so I'm happy you are one of the people in this world that share education.... I love it... You, Eric o, and Eric the car guy are doing it right... So, hope ya have a good week man and thanks again!

Your an idiot, Saturns we’re one of the best, reliable cars out there. I had one that ran perfect at 336,000 miles and I have one now with 262k miles and it does not burn any oil, and no most saturns out last a lot of cars on road
