How are people affording $5k a month for a studio....in Brooklyn??? That is absolutely insane!!!
@JordanPeace
@JordanPeace 6 ай бұрын
Considering this is a 10-15 minute subway ride from most of the offices in the financial district, this is actually one of the more convenient places for people working there to live. There’s definitely no shortage of mid-to-high six figure salary jobs that could afford a place like this and it’s a pretty compelling option compared to the mostly older buildings with less space or light or modern finishes that you’d typically find in most parts of lower Manhattan that would give you a similar commute time

I remember when we had an 8 day power outage in August in NW Queens in the early 2000’s. I lived on the 16th floor. Not only was it stifling in the apartment, but climbing all those flights was exhausting. Climbing them with groceries and bags of ice to put in coolers I bought so I could have some perishables to eat was nearly impossible. Thankfully l hadn’t adopted my cat yet, because it was brutally hot to leave her there all day. After I moved out, I promised myself to never live so high up from the ground in case of another power outage.

@samk2266 That was a huge outage in 2003 that started in Ohio and went through many states. There was a software glitch (in Ohio, I think) that prevented info about some lines going down from reaching the people who would reroute the electrical draw. (Personally, I like “aliens” as the cause.)

I remember that and I live on the 12th floor, that was more than enough. The hallways have no windows so it was hard to tell which floor you were on after walking up so many flights of stairs. A neighbor on the 1st floor lent me a flashlight, when I got to my floor, I was still turned around shining the light on every peephole looking for my apartment. It was hotter than hell. Who would have thought there would be a power outage of that size on the East Coast?

My fear of heights makes me wonder who'd be brave enough to be up to the 93rd floor? Here's a more practical concern: how structurally sound is this thing? Buildings 20 stories tall are known to 'sway' in high winds. Imagine this if there's a torrential storm. Willis Tower in Chicago, IL was reported to move ~3 feet and that chunky building has a thicker base than this one.

I was selected for a lottery unit in this building I will be moving into soon. It’s a 1 bedroom, but it’s barely the size of the studio you showed, because these buildings make their affordable units much smaller since they’re less profitable / to maximize space for standard rate units. I knew my 1 bed was tiny but seeing your video really opened my eyes to how much they’re ripping me off. I'm impressed! I never thought anyone would ever build anything like this in Brooklyn. I grew up n a 6 family building two blocks from the Queens line in Bushwick. The other side of ST. Nicholas Avenue was Ridgewood. We lived in a fairly modern building that was built with a real tiled bathroom and built in bathtub and sink. It even had a window looking into the back yard. Carpeted hallways and stairs. The front doors had beveled glass. The building was well cared for because the owners lived in it. Rose bushes covered the entire back yard with borders of little flowers. There was a fig tree and a patch of herbs like basil which we picked for cooking. The building was rent controlled and we paid $50.45 a month until 1964 when we moved to Florida. We had very good handpicked neighbors who lived there long term. By comparison my grandparents lived on the next street up. The bathroom was an add-on because it used to have a shared room on each floor. There was a window that opened to the airshaft. My Great Grandmother and her sister used to own the building. After she sold it there was a progression of owners who didn't take care of at all. The apartments turned over constantly with drunks, a prostitute and loudly fighting people. Those apartments now rent for $4,000 a month. The neighborhood has changed. It was originally Dutch, then German. It was Sicilians when I lived there and now it is Hispanic. Many of the people work at the hospital. It used to be Wyckoff Heights but now it is Columbia Presbyterian. $5000 a month for this tower is not a real stretch from these apartments and they are much nicer.
