The NYC Subway just keeps getting worse, and now since more and more riders use it without paying, it's becoming a lawless dump instead of the world class transit system new yorkers deserve....

I'm from Germany and i am amazed how Americans managed to mess this up so badly. There are no gates and nothing stopping you from getting onto buses and trains. Very rarely there is a conductor checking the tickets but it happens like once every 100 rides. Yet fare evasion isn't nearly as big an issue here as it seems to be in New York. And i can assure you, this most certainly isn't because Germans are some morally superior people. It's simply because fares are actually affordable for poor people here.
@Potatwielder
@Potatwielder 2 ай бұрын
But you have gates for commuter trains and metro right, right?😅
@theincrediblefox
@theincrediblefox 2 ай бұрын
@@Potatwielder Nope. No gates, barriers or anything. You can just walk onto any train platform if you want. What i'll say though, is that on commuter trains conductors checking for tickets are a bit more common, maybe like once every 20 rides or so and on long distance and high speed trains there are conductors on almost every single train.
@DaCouchWarrior
@DaCouchWarrior 2 ай бұрын
Im from Poland. Pretty much same, even if you not expecting conductor or you just know there wont be one (lets say you will disembark on next station) you still buy ticket.

@@Potatwielder Metro trains (or U-Bahn in German), Commuter Train (S-Bahn) or Regional Trains all do NOT have gates in Germany, you can walk straight into the trains, and many stations are very simple, with only platforms. The key is to actually have some punishment (60 euros) for those who are caught by ticket inspectors. Inspectors randomly ride trains and busses to check tickets. Also there's a somewhat cheap Deutschlandsticket, with which you can ride all regional/communtor train/busses for 49 euros per month (29 for students).
@FrankieBoy-whatever
@FrankieBoy-whatever 2 ай бұрын
Same in Vienna. You could just walk in without a ticket as there is nothing like a gate. In case you get caught, which hardly ever happens you pay a fine of around 100€. Seeing that a yearly ticket is only 365€ to ride all public transportation in the city it’s just not worth the risk, even if getting caught is extremely unlikely

Hey NYC, here is your solution: MAKE THE FARE FREE. And tax more in city tax to cover the costs to run it. Benefits: Very few people tax evade; fare evasion won't be a thing; MORE tourism because it is FREE to go almost anywhere in NYC meaning more business coming into NYC, meaning more sales tax, meaning more income for the city Downside: Politicians don't get to line their pockets whilst thinking short-term and fucking up everyday lives.

@@WICK_3D I believe one can be both criminal and victim. Here me out. I'm an individualist, and I believe that people always have the ultimate decision on how things go down for themselves, under arrest? resist or comply, breakout, bail, or stay your time. Someone threatening you? kill them, let them kill you, flee... I believe that even if events can prevent a desired outcome, immediate decisions are always viable and the individual alone is responsible for those actions. with this in mind, I believe that people who don't pay for fairs, is labelled a criminal, because while they were pushed to make a decision, they could have just not taken the fair, and pay later or pay if they had enough. Now, in the opposing side, is that people would likely not commit the crime if they weren't pushed that far, and I agree with that. Theft would be non-existent if the community was high-trust, afluent, and had tight-knit relations. But people are pushed by circumstances and nowhere is perfect, that's understandable. That's why I agree with self-defence, that while you're killing, the situation was pressured onto you. Anyway this rant is getting long, so take with what you will.

"no emergency exit" is an immediate red flag, no matter what systems you have in place to open the gates in an emergency. what if for whatever reason, there's nobody in the booth during an emergency? what if there's a power outage and the gates can't open? there's a reason that wouldn't fly in the united states: fire regulations prohibit it, and for good reason. on that note, doors that are spring-loaded and thus open when power to the motor/solenoid/whatever is cut along with an emergency override switch on the wall that mechanically cuts power to the gates and activates the fire alarm would be a good solution that balances safety with stopping fare-dodgers.

So we have a problem where people don't want to pay the fare for various reasons... Engineers mind: since the current system clearly is not working let's look at what other countries are doing and take a peek into the past. Perhaps it was doomed to fail from the get-go. Re-evaluate our decisions and come up with an improved design. Politicians mind: can we block the emergency exit? Ah? I didn't hear it. These people need an emergency exit?.. Okay, put a time lock on these things. These posts of our highly trained military officers and policeman are costing so much money, we need to increase the fare. I visited Japan recently and have fully utilized their public transportation system both by subway (regular and bullet) and by bus. I have seen the stark difference of how Japan runs its public transport compared to New York. The efficiency, cleanliness, safety are top notch and no one ever thinks of fare evading. It probably is never thought of that one would definitely stand out if they do so with impunity. There were transport officers, but they mostly served to direct people where to go and provided information when asked. It truly was amazing. It was also absolutely safe to walk in the streets at night, and we did so several times with no fear of being accosted, stabbed or shot. All the convenient stores are open 24/7 and some of their merchandise are actually displayed right outside and no one dares to steal. I don't think I've seen homeless folks too. I wish New York was the same, it would be glorious.

@@bksvdbunfortunately I can not agree with that because the police in America has already long lost its ability to be respected. The BLM and Defund the police movements were just the boiling point of problems the police their have had for decades. Racial Bias and civil asset forfeiture are 2 clear examples of these problems combined with Crimes being Unpunished in a lot of cases for being "White" And cases where just being "Black" Makes you Suspicious enough to use civil asset forfeiture to charge your car with a crime and all the property inside of it or that just looking at a cop the wrong way or answering their questions can regardless of their racial biases get your property "Legally Stolen" (and in lots of cases stealing more in a year than actual Criminals do including people's houses) by the police who are supposed to be protecting you. And that's just two of hundreds of issues that have been boiling for a long time, and without major and critical ground up Reformation of the police and laws they enforce from a foundational Level they won't be earning back the respect of the people for a long time. It was the inevitable conclusion to systemic corruption and erosion

The reason why the Japan public transport system is so well run & maintained is because it is privately run. It also doesn’t operate 24 hours a day, which allows time for regular maintenance. As for the Japanese society, their citizens have affordable housing, health care, affordable food… it’s a society that isn’t necessarily rich but their basic needs are met # something that millions of Americans are unable to do. And it’s worth noting their society doesn’t have the American individualism & consumerism. Unfortunately too many Americans are a selfish lot.

I live in Poland, but I used to live in the US. The difference between public transport here and in the us is like night and day. Here, when you enter a bus, tram or train no one stops you or checks your ticket. You buy a ticket at a vending machine in the vehicle or at a stop and you scan it. Every once in a while, a plainclothes employee of the public transport services checks if you have a ticket (this happens pretty rarely). If you don't have a ticket you pay a fine. Most people pay because this is a decent country with generaly hard working, honest people.

In Queensland Australia where I live, we have transit police who are regular police but just assigned to transit. Their job is to walk train, bus & ferry platforms and ride the transit services. When they jump on a service they'll require everyone to demonstrate they've either tapped on with enough credit to cover the fair, or possess a valid digital single use ticket. If you don't, it's an on the spot $300 fine and you get a fare evasion charge on your criminal record. They also sometimes hang out at gates to check ticketing. You might go 3 or 4 services without seeing one, but eventually you will. It makes fare evasion like russian roulette because you're guaranteed to get caught it's just a matter of when. They're also about to drop all fares down to 50c in August.

In Prague we don't have any turnstiles. You just walk in. There are ticket controllers that have right to hold you until the police arrives in case you don't have a ticket and refuse to pay the fine. You can buy anual ticket for fair price (around 0.4 usd per day) and you can ride anything anytime.

This just sounds insane. Doing this increases costs for people buying the items in the trucks, but at the same time there's a shoplifting problem. Wouldn't it be fair to assume that the people shoplifting are probably not paying their fare for the bus or subway either? So instead of punishing the people caught doing any of it, like they should, it all goes back to the people playing by the rules are the only ones getting screwed.

Fare evasion is not a victimless crime ... but it seems that shoplifting and every other crime is?

Must have missed the part where ANYONE said that they were victimless crimes. Or maybe you just pulled that from your a** to make some stupid comparison that no one even alluded to. I think it's option B.

Idk what is working better in Germany, but it definitely is. There are people coming into the bus/train to check for your ticket. So you could be lucky in 9/10 rides and ride for free but if you get caught, you pay a very high fine, which makes it not worth it anymore. Also it's not the city/police that have to check the tickets, but the company itself (or a security company employed by them)

Yep. I am amazed what NYC is trying to do. They are inventing a wheel that already been invented and they are failing. Send city officals to Central Europe. Or maybe just make them watch KZbin videos about metro systems… you know there is this thing… the internet.

You know damn well those officials are senile 70 year olds. They don't "do" InTérÑäŢ, or study abroad because of their brain melting, stubborness or embezzlement reasons.

I have been to Japan. So why is Japan so much better? The answer is simple. They have simple laws that preserve their culture and they enforce them. We are losing our culture. The American culture of the big city like NYC was wonderful at one time, but I won't go there anymore.

If Mr Jordan went on subways in Taiwan, Japan, Korea, or China he'd have a mental breakdown. Their subways are clean, affordable, safe, and generally a great experience. And to preempt the inevitable troll, no place is perfect, perfect isn't the point. Civilization is fragile and difficult and not inevitable.
