This is so much better than listening to all these modern versions of hymns and carols that make odd extra sounds with the throat and sudden high pitched frills and chord changes for no reason. Nice.

I also love the way they sing Angels We Have Heard In High. They sing it correctly with no extra added h to "In Excelsis Deo." My high school Latin teacher was Catholic and director of his church choir. He explained that it does not have an h in Excelsis. Then he made a joke about "there is no cheese and crackers in a Christmas Carol."😊

Here is another of the great composed carols which we Americans can proudly call our own. The lovely poem, by Rev Edmund Hamilton Sears, was first published in the Christian Register, in 1850. Rev Dr. Morrison, editor of the Register, received the poem in December 1849 and was so delighted with it that he read it at several Christmas programs. He published it in his magazine in December of the following year. Dr. Edmund Sears was a Unitarian minister and poet, who "believed and preached the Divinity of Christ". Spending his entire life in Massachusetts where he served several pastorates, he edited the Monthly Religious Magazine (1859-71), and published several books and poems of a religious nature. He is especially remembered for his two Christmas carols, Calm On the Listening Ear, and It Came upon the Midnight Clear. The latter was sent to a brother clergyman with a request that he find a musical setting for it. This he did, adapting it to an old hymn-tune which is occasionally used today. the carol-tune which has carried the song to its present popularity was composed by Richard Storrs Willis, musician and composer, of Boston.On reading Sears' poem, he was inspired by its natural beauty to write the score which is now so familiar to us all. His melody is called "Carol" and is one of the most worthy of the composed carol-tunes. Richard Willis was a brother of Nathanial Parker Willis, the poet. His father, Deacon Nathanial Willis, was the founder of the Youth's companion. It Came upon the Midnight Clear is widely used in England and has become a popular favorite in America. Julian says that it ranks with the best Christmas hymns in the English language. Written by: Edmund H. Sears: 1850 Composed by: Richard S, Willis 1851 Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year! This is the prettiest arrangement of this song ever. I come back to hear it every Christmas. I actually never liked this song as a kid because it was too harsh for my liking, but this almost lullaby version with the strings is breathtaking. I haven't heard them sing this arrangement since they sang with David Archuleta (I attended that concert and this song is the only thing I remember... it made that much of an impact). Sing it again! So beautiful!

And ye, beneath life’s crushing load, Whose forms are bending low, Who toil along the climbing way With painful steps and slow, Look now for glad and golden hours Come swiftly on the wing. Oh rest beside the weary road, and hear the angels sing. For lo, the days...”

These people show a real joy in their singing. A fact which I feel we Christians, I'm ashamed to say, often don't show! What makes this choir so great is that they are communicators not performers.
@hannahrose57396 жыл бұрын
That should be a given for Christians, shouldn't it? But in reality? I tear up just considering the words of the poem. Apparantly written in 1849 it seems to be a timeless song. So heartening in the midst of cares! David Jeremiah's recent study on angels has helped to put this in perspective for me--probably for lots of other folk as well.

So true!! They convey the spirit of the Lord who tells of the truths in their songs!! Some people don’t understand what spiritual knowledge is, but one day they will know!! It is more than a feeling, although it includes that, but it comes to both the mind and the heart, and when you know and feel it, you know it is true, and you begin to wonder where it comes from!! God, Christ and the Holy Ghost.

1. It came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth To touch their harps of gold: “Peace on the earth, good will to men From heav’n’s all-gracious King.” The world in solemn stillness lay To hear the angels sing. 2. Still thru the cloven skies they come With peaceful wings unfurled, And still their heav’nly music floats O’er all the weary world. Above its sad and lowly plains They bend on hov’ring wing, And ever o’er its babel sounds The blessed angels sing. 3. For lo! the days are hast’ning on, By prophets seen of old, When with the ever-circling years Shall come the time foretold, When the new heav’n and earth shall own The Prince of Peace their King, And the whole world send back the song Which now the angels sing.
