The idea that artists create great work every time is a myth.
Knowing when your efforts are working or not is all part of being an artist.

My God man . . . If I ever could draw as good as your "misfires" I would feel I have reached my pinacol!

One the subject of not comparing one's work or style to another's, one way of working around this issue that people can have is by studying how that artist does their work and then finding what elements in their process you can incorporate into your own. In this way, we can find ourselves being inspired by other artists' work rather than simply trying to copy that same exact style.

"why" another artist does what they do would be more of an inspiration to me, although inspiration is something I keep away from. The "how" does another artist do something would indicate that craft and skill are a dominant part of how I create, which they aren't.

If you wanted an exact portrait, you would take a good photo…….if you want a piece people want to look at and that gives them a feeling of some emotion…..then draw it like you do Tony

Do you ever come back to the same subject and reference to try again after having moved on for a while? And if so, does it work out or do you find that you need at least a different reference to get that connection back?

I'm not sure how to word this: But surely you would have to have SOME technical knowledge, ie: space between 3 dots, relative to size etc, before you can start to inject your personal interpretation on to the piece? Would it then be better to sit and draw nothing but dots and shapes to acquire the accurate eye before beginning portraits?

I don't think you need technical knowlegde just good observational skills. If you allow yourself to connect with the subject what you inject begins with the very first mark you make.

Nice video about a great topic, thx Tony. I am curious why the woman with her eyes closed (ponytail over her left shoulder) didnt work out for you? She truly looked beautiful and in my mind seeing her portrait made me realize in the 9 portraits Ive done ive only ever drawn friends smiling at the camera and I really need to diversify haha! Thx
