Hi Tony, thank you for the knowledge and inspiration you provide on your channel. I've come to drawing very late in life at 64, but I'm enjoying myself so all good. I find drawing takes me so long as I think fear of failure holds me back from expressing myself fully, I just dont seem to be able to go for it as you do which is something I would love to do.

Drawing is the most important thing regardless of the medium. Drawing is much more than marks it's built on observation. So learn to look, really look. Spend more time looking than drawing. But it's not about knowing, so studying anatomy and methods wont help you to see better, in fact it will have a negative effect and slow down you progress. Never draw the same thing twice. Learn and move on, this will accelerate your learning.

I did something similar to the phone art game in a first school lesson (I was one of the kids lol) - I remember the drawing I made for the other pupil was a cartoony dog’s face. It was pretty successful apart from not realising it would have been helpful to describe the top of his head as a curved line.

Good one Tony! Looks great for difficult paper to blend on. Its funny to watch you cast aside the Nitram stick, Thats my go to brand Ive been using on better paper mind you but you're right is not good stuff or dark enough, but I find myself using it for the basic plotting out of the image mainly because im not confident enough to jump into dark charcoal right away which is where watching your videos comes in to help me! ...BTW The Arbutus charcoal my friend cooked for me is actually really nice! Dark and consistent marks!

Very good motivational video. Thanks Tony ! Reminds me of the Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts song by Funkadelic. -"You gravitate to that which you secretly love most. You meet in life the exact reproduction of your own thoughts. There is no chance, coincidence or accident. In a world ruled by law and divine order. You rise as high as your dominant aspiration. You descend to the level of your lowest concept of your self. Free your mind and your ass will follow." 😊

Thanks, Tony. 'Talent' is such a damaging concept in my opinion. Used to have this debate all the time with people in my past life as a maths teacher, here in the UK. People would try to tell me that some kids are 'talented' at maths and some aren't. Schools even used to identify groups of kids as 'gifted and talented'. Maybe they still do. For me, that's an horrific way of labelling kids. The book 'Mindset' by Carol Dweck explains why, and pretty much demolishes the concept of 'talent'.

Great demo, thank you... I never leave comments normally.......what a breath of fresh air. I've only stumbled across you recently, and have been inspired to go back to charcoal after falling out of love with it some time ago, and made great progress. Where did you get this Koh charcoal pencil from? I can only find it in graphite and would love to try one. I'm also keen to try your lessons, not really sure where to start, I'd quite like to watch your dot advice, if you let me know which one it is please it would be very much appreciated. Thanks again for posting your work, so helpful.

Materials!! so interesting. I watched a guy do a portrait with powdered charcoal, don't know the paper. ALL of the charcoal was applied with brushes: big fluffy one or two. short bristle small one, a bit os smudging. It was so interesting to watch.

I agree with you on the start. I simply want to capture what's in front of me without sketching out a detailed drawing. If I spent too long on that drawing, I get bored with the subject fast. Whatever I would do after that boredom regardless of the rendering, would seem disingenuous.
