i wonder how many viewers realize how many takes you had to make. Set the camera film, return, relocate the camera do a shoot, come back then reposition the camera again...... You probably traversed that dune region 6 or 7 times to get all the footage. That is real dedication and physical stamna!

Northern Michigan is beautiful. I grew up in Ann Arbor and sadly visited those same places only once. I long to go back, especially since I was one of the out of shape people stuck in the middle of those dunes and begged for someone to rescue me. My daughter was patient and after several hours of resting and trying and sliding down, I finally made it back up to the car just before dark! I want to conquer it after my significant weight loss! Lake Michigan is spectacular! The pics of our kids playing on the shores were so blue, that I actually asked them when had we taken them to the Caribbean…??? Glad you had fun!

I had the same truck! Always fill up at 1/4 tank. If you are on a hill on anything below a 1/4 tank you can lock up your cylinders with air cause air will get into your fuel line. Also, you will burn up your injection pump cause it's cooled by diesel fuel. My repair cost me $1,500. Good luck guys!!

Hey Billy, speaking from experience of dealing with over thousands of vehicles from my Dad having 60 years in the business and being the President of the Used Car Association in this state, plus owning and being partners in several new car dealerships, if you can help it, never let your truck get below a 1/4 of a tank in order for it not to suck up any trash into the injectors, plus the fuel and water separator filters. It is not the same when a diesel runs out of fuel like it is with a gasoline engine, you can really run into major expensive repairs. Just a tip, it’s your thing, do what you wanta do. LOL 😂. Stay safe and have fun.

Tip --If you run out of fuel in your diesel truck , You have to bleed all the air out of the system , it takes about 30 minutes for me to do it ..... nothing needs to be repaired . I have done this on my 2000 Dodge as others 3 to 4 times ....

Those islands you saw at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore have some great camping on them (baby bears). North Manitou is the more rustic out of the two islands, while South Manitou has designated camping spots. Next time in Michigan if you make it to Copper Harbor that is about as far as you can get to nowhere and has a lot of off-road parking on the way along the lakeshore.

Grew up in Michigan and spent a lot of time in that area. Grandparents lost everything in the Great Depression and were homeless for almost a year. They travelled around Michigan in a Model T Ford and camped. Later on they would take us kids along to discover these cool spots. There is a ship that goes from Ludington, MI to the Green Bay area and also a high speed hydrofoil that goes from Muskegon to Milwaukee.

Glad you made it to the fuel station! Because it's a diesel engine, if you are actually running out of fuel while driving, immediately at the first sputter or loss of power on the foot pedal, put the vehicle in neutral, turn engine off and coast to safe spot. If you run the engine completely out of fuel, it will require air to be bled out of the fuel system before it will restart. On some diesel engines this can be very difficult. I would suggest the next time you are around a mechanic, have him show you the connections to bleed air out of your fuel system. Have him explain the process of doing this as it takes one person to turn the engine over while the other is under the hood bleeding the air. Better yet, fuel up regularly! Oh Ya! I'm enjoying the videos!

Be careful and carry extra fuel. Running that Dodge diesel out of fuel can make a $3000 sand dune recovery seem cheap. Fuel is the lubrication for the injector pump and it only takes a second without that and it's toast. I heard replacement pumps are now north of $4k, plus shop labor now. Several years ago it cost $2k for a rebuilt pump for my 2002 Dodge diesel.

That camping spot in the UP you liked so much, you can do that all the way back down the west coast. I know tons of free spots nestled next to little lakes all to yourself. Hiking away from everybody - North Country trail traverses the whole state north to south. Miles and miles of other trail systems. Mountain biking in Michigan is huge. How do you find the out of the way places? You should have asked. I have watched you since your trawler days but don't recall you wanting specific Michigan advice. Wherever you are now ask for info in your next vid. You caught Lake Michigan on some very flat days. I'm guessing that changed by the time you got south. Hopefully you kite surfed in Grand Haven or Holland.
