Wow, Ken, this session sure made my musical day. So much to absorb, yet is all so compelling and quite inspiring. So, here I go, back to listening & trying your voicings, and rhythms. Thanks lots for posting another great video.

Kent, where did you go, and what did you do after highschool? Where did you learn all of your knowledge?
@KentHewittpiano884 жыл бұрын
I'm mostly self taught. I went to hear a lot of live jazz in NYC, but also bought and studied jazz records. I learned a lot playing gigs with good musicians. I had a few good teachers, and I got a music degree from UCONN, but that was mostly classical studies.

I saw trumpet player Dick Pearce's quartet play this in South London 5 or 6 years ago, probably at the Golden Dragon pub in Sydenham. As he's a bit bashful in public his pianist did the chatting. I'm struggling to remember his name; he died a year or two later. Anyway, this pianist, one of so many good ones in London, said to the audience, ''For our next tune we're going to play 'It Could Happen To You'. And by the looks of some of you, it already has!''. One of my favourite jazz jokes. The tune has become one of my favs; the Miles Davis Quintet version with Coltrane, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums is a great version. Perhaps my love of this tune is linked to my learning the piano with Kent or because of the joke. Who knows. Anyway, I'm going to try to learn it today! That'll frighten the cat away! 'Come BACK Snowy!'
@KentHewittpiano883 жыл бұрын
That's a cool line....I'll remember that if I ever get another gig where I'm the leader. I've been to London, but never played in England, only Italy, Austria, Germany, and France. I ;oved those Miles albums...that's how we learned the tunes.

It may not have been the intended purpose of this 'lesson', but this has quite the "value of arrangements" to gain from it on top of anything else :) And man, those _sunglasses_ ! B-)
@KentHewittpiano886 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment...yes, with BIAB you create the arrangement that you want, except I still have a lot to learn about it.

Funk rhythm BIAB sounding 🌽 but you still find a way to say something beautiful and tasteful sounding through it. I know this is an older video, but have you tried any new tech for backing? Nothing beats a real band, but I also like the idea of playing along with recordings of great musicians! Drumgenius is okay app for usable drum loops

Thanks....watch my newer videos...because I have upgraded my BIAB backing tracks.

That was great, I love the Bossa Nova version Kent. I really need a new keyboard, and looking for something, I have an old workstation with sketchy buttons a nightmare to program. I am looking for a some a variety of styles, blue tooth capability not too cheesy good sounds, has to be portable as I am always dragging my clunky old triton around I can deal with computers but they take the fun and spontenaity out of playing on the fly Surprises me how good your piano sounds with Band in a Box, tasteful songs and playing
@MaxTooney6 жыл бұрын
I had a feeling you would have fun with Band-in-a-Box. (I'm sure you're anxiously awaiting their Chet Baker extension, so that virtual Chet can complain about the accompaniment being too loud.)
@KentHewittpiano886 жыл бұрын
Max, what a memory!...you remember my (or should I say ADEM) bits better than anyone. I don't know how much I'm going to enjoy BIAB if I can't program the bass lines. Is there another option?

I think BIAB has real samples of actual name musicians and I believe backing tracks on KZbin does the same, so the quality of the instruments and playing is better.
@brucejeric6701 Жыл бұрын
I agree with you kent. But I always havd to use iReal pro. I got band in the box but it’s way over my head. Like most tech stuff. Then it takes thd fun out of playing and practicing. Wish I had young people around thst could teach me this shit. ButI’m alone on a farm in ohio and rarely go out.

When you first uploaded, I got a notification and started listening while making notes. those comments are gone because you deleted your first upload. I don't know what you might've changed, but here is a new set of comments based on listening to this a second time. This is fun listening to the various genre of style. The fact that you're a genius allows you to do this is so admirable. I totally dig the big band swing zone that you did with the first. Bossa nova on the second I think may be my favorite, probably because I am a percussionist. The funky groove version feels like pure clean jazz that I enjoy when you play so much. Whoever did the saxophone on the fourth version was not doing just a practice session, there were really wailing on that sax and it sounded great. Is this ' band in a box' a brand-name or a type of software or what? Could you describe what it is and what it does? I assume the band in a box can do much more then these 4 demos, and I hope you put out some more of this type of video using it.

Trying to learn piano but have so much problems with fingers aching all time. I rest them and now to just twenty minutes use a day. Do you have any tips?
@darlingfarm95256 жыл бұрын
Tech Tins you have to play with very relaxed muscles and technique to avoid getting sore. Just hang in there. It takes time but it’s worth it

GRAUT MUSIC : Thank you for very kind words.
@p1anosteve6 жыл бұрын
Hi it's me again. Yes relaxation is the key. Only use the muscles essential for the specific action you make all others being totally relaxed, and immediately the note has been played relax the fingers (you need just the weight of the fingers supported by the hand and arm to hold a key down) Think of the relaxation needed for a good golf swing and you'll get the idea. Don't raise your fingers to play use the weight of your hand and arm. Think of your hand as a light hammer swinging down with the fingers poised for the striking the keys. The piano is a percussion instrument and should be played kinetically (if there is such a word). Also look into the Taubman method of using rotation of the hand. Good luck you will get there eventually, and when you do, you will suddenly feel and light when you play and be able to play much faster.
