That second story is upsetting because it was so preventable. That little girl clocked that something was wrong, told someone who had the ability to go investigate, and they dismissed it until it was too late. I think we all occasionally encounter situations that raise an alarm bell in our minds and we have to find the balance between “It’s probably nothing” and “what if it’s something?” An elderly neighbor who sounds like they might be in trouble isn’t one of the ones you want to ignore

I sometimes get a chuckle over those as well, but at the same time, I'm appreciative of his effort to be clear about what images are actual pictures of the story and which ones are merely representative of some element being talked about. 14:47 Oh dear lord I am having an intense flashback right now hearing this part of the story! I’m almost 58 years old now and I had completely forgotten what happened to me at approximately age 7 or so. I was a latchkey kid so after I got home from school I would walk a little ways down the sidewalk of our townhouse neighborhood in Alexandria VA, to go visit the elderly man who lived alone and would sit on his porch in the afternoons to talk to me and keep me company for a while. He had a fold out lawn chair he would sit in, just like the one Mr. B described that elderly man sitting in. One day my elderly neighbor had to get up for some reason and when he did the same thing happened to him like in this story. The chair basically caved in on him and he was instantly pinned inside it very quickly getting crushed by the pressure of the metal bars and his own weight pressing against them. I have a picture perfect image in my head and it all seemed to happen very fast but he panicked, I froze, and he quickly started begging me to help him and pull him up and out of there because he soon started having trouble breathing. All I can remember is that somehow my little 7 year old scrawny & skinny female arms, back and whatever else strength I could muster grabbed his whole body and heaved him up and out of that chair and sat him down right next to it on the ground. Wow. I haven’t thought about this … probably since then. I remember him being extremely relieved & thankful telling me I had probably just saved his life That was a big phrase to comprehend at the time so I never really took it seriously but now, hearing Mr. Ballen tell a story so similar to that experience tells me that I very well did save his life that day. I’m almost 58 and really never remembered or realized i saved someone’s life. Thanks Mr. B for bringing this memory back to me. It would have stayed long forgotten if not for you 🥹🙏🏻

I mean, seriously, if you had a kid who just came home one day like "this old guy waved at me", would your first reaction be "ok, I'll go check and see if he's dead"? I doubt it.

Elderly people are vulnerable and having systems in place like “Meals On Wheels” in my state in SC where volunteers check daily on seniors, helps. For seniors without family checking in, it’s an integral part of making sure those prone to health issues and falls are checked on regularly. In the past schools have been important in tracking vulnerable children but now more kids are being homeschooled so people should say something if they are ever worried about kids living in their areas. Animals too, as they can’t tell people when they are in danger or need of rescue. Community is important. ❤
@doyalthomas366712 күн бұрын
I worked with Ga.Power reading meters for 18yrs and we had a program called ambassador and basically when you read an elderly customer's meter and you knew that they were alone without or with family members living away somewhere, we'd make it a point to check on them and in some cases we may be the only one to talk with them most of the month. It's sad some may have outlived their children and had no one at all.
@k.elysium681912 күн бұрын
Yes, this sort of thing is extremely important. There are a lot of callous people who want to do away with various support systems that help the most vulnerable and it's very selfish and wrong. It makes me really angry.
@ellybean586812 күн бұрын
As I have gotten older, I have come to understand how isolating being older is. Visits or even phone calls are a bother even for family despite living 10 minutes away. I will likely be found only after someone detects an odor...😢

@ellybean5868 I feel for you :( This will be me one day too. I'd still rather that than bring more souls onto this sinking ship we call Earth.
@kendallneason364512 күн бұрын
@@ellybean5868 I feel for you. I do hope that won’t be your fate. I am the primary caregiver for my 82 year old dad. My mother is also alive and fortunately is in good health. But I worry for both of them and even for myself one day as I’m a single mother of grown children with their own lives. In the end we all must leave the world by ourselves. But by staying involved socially with your community, meaning neighbors, friends, churches, classes like art or cooking instruction, and volunteering you can find friends who will support you. There are programs out there if you look into it. Your local newspaper, radio station or television news station may know about some programs. Certainly your local county council office should be able to provide information. Being lonely and isolated is gloomy and scary. But you can find help by reaching out. Just try a little something each day. Even if it’s just introducing yourself to your neighbors or local librarians. I wish you good fortune and a new young friend or two.

There is no life sentence in Brazil. One can have a sentence of 100+ years, but they stay only 40 years in jail. It used to be 30 years. The length of the sentence makes a difference how you serve it. After 16%-70% of the sentence, you can change the type of prison: max/medium security, one that allows to work in prison, one that allows to work outside and sleep in prison, and probation.

When I was little my grandpa owned some pigs. He always told us how dangerous they could be and we had to stay away from the area were their pen was. But he made sure nobody accidentally got into the pen because he had a 6 ft chain link fence built that was 4 ft away from the actual pigpen so it was fully surrounded with chain link. He didn't want to take any chance of one of the grandkids sticking their hand into the pigpen. He said one of his uncle's lost a leg to what he thought what's a gentle pig that he had raised.

The second story annoys me because when tf are people going to understand KIDS UNDERSTAND MORE THAN YOU KNOW. She was CLEARLY worried and even made it a point to articulate that. Her mother still dismissed her. If you pay attention to your child, you can tell when they’re being for real and when they’re making things up.
