It doesn’t work!

I couldn’t get my warped brake discs fixed with the life hack I found on Facebook. Maybe it only works with powertools that I don’t have on my adventure but the brakes work and we continue our journey, going further into turkey. It’s 37 degrees Celsius today and the heat is wearing hard on Maree but benefit my battery and range a lot. But will charging work the same way and what if I wouldn’t have saved to poor turtle crossing the road and will we ever make it to our destination?

Discs warping is common on the SR/F. Might be worth checking to see if the pistons in your brake caliper are sticking slightly. The drag of that may cause the issue.

We use it when the moment and time is right. Do bare in mind, what you see in the videos is all we have, and we’re not going back. We can’t just store it in our garage or home because we have neither 😉 so of course we bring it on a world journey so when we want to make a camping vacation somewhere, no work, we can use it

Marie ist right with not parking on electric parking or charging spots. As the Jimmy is not an electric Vehicle its forbidden to park there no matter if you are charging your motocycle there. It can be verry expensive to pay for a towed vehicle.. and in other countries people make a living out of towing or corrupt police takes their share... so yes.. dont park there.

The 'play' on a performance rotor is to allow for thermal expansion, not runout. If your rotor is warped, the only solution is to replace it.

@@MarcTravels Sorry. I had a warped rotor on a BMW F650GS and while it wasn’t much in terms of runout measurement, it made the bike sketchy to ride (no ABS either) and I couldn’t bash/hammer the warp out. I’ve also replaced my share of rotors on cars for the same reason.

There are semi and full-floating discs, which are either very loss or slightly loose. After lots of ks, the full floaters can flog out the bobbins causing excessive movement and even faster wear. There is a company in France that does oversized bobbins to take up wear. As was said pulsing on your brake lever will indicate warped discs. I have a great result using a green scouring pad for cleaning cooking pots and a can of brake cleaner and clean rags on the discs as you can get a build-up of crap on them. BTW I have a fully vented mesh jacket custom-made in California in hot weather. Crazy expensive though. Finding a synthetic mesh jacket that doesn't melt from friction in a crash isn't easy. You can get fully vented Leather Jackets as well with heaps of perforations in them as well as a winter liner. I have searched for the mythical 4 season jacket for years with no success, I now have a Winter one and a Summer one.

Never do that. The rotors are semi floating they aren’t supposed to be loose, they just take up the thermal expansion of the rotor under braking. Some rotors use square rivets so you could not turn them anyway-big clue there. Making them turn is wearing out the metal, increasing tolerances and that can eventually lead to the rotor coming away from the carrier ! The rotors warp because the pistons and seals need replacing as they cause uneven braking.

​@@MarcTravels The expansion is why they are floating. They also float to allow for sideways movement. Discs go through many heat cycles and as with all metal that can warp them even slightly so they need to move sideways to allow for this. If the bobbins are tight then you will feel the warp in the lever, floating you shouldn't because the bobbin soaks up the difference unless they are excessively warped. The hack you are trying is to prevent warping. It's something we use to do in the shop on brake jobs. You need a can of brake cleaner, a nut and bolt that goes through the bobbin hole, 2 washers that cover the bobbin if the bolt head and nut don't. Poke the bolt through the bobbin hole, put the nut on the back then turn the bolt clockwise until it grips the bobbin and starts to turn it. Gently at first as you do not want to squeeze the bobbin tighter. As it spins blast it with brake cleaner until it is free. Repeat for all of them. Your discs should now move a lot more.

@@nockianlifter661They do if they are gummed with brake dust and road grime, you should be able to move them between finger and thumb. I own several bikes with floating discs and there isn't 1 I can't do this on. I also own a few fixed disc old school bikes because the callipers slide to allow for this expansion but the sliding part of the calliper needs regular cleaning and a smidge of copper grease applied to the running surfaces. If you don't clean them they stick. your discs heat up to much and it can damage/warp them. If left you will eventually grind to a halt when your callipers seize solid and you cook your discs. The buttons help with that job when callipers are fixed as the hydraulic action of the calliper can't cope with the expansion on it's own so keep them clean. Keeping stuff clean and working as intended isn't a dangerous myth, quite the opposite. While they are well engineered and we'd all be in hedge backs if they weren't, they are like everything, mass produced and made to a price.

To me, this looks more like a case of sticky brake pistons. "Piston don't retract enough for some reason" You could try loosening the brake calipers "not take off" and with loose screws someone has to pull in the brake leaver. While the brake leaver is pulled in you retighten the screws. " Torque the caliper bolts to 19 lb-ft (26 Nm). Source Zero Manual " This should center the caliper to the disc. Of course, if the disc is warped this will sadly not help much. Best of luck and ride safe!

The power drill and brake cleaner reduced the pulsation greatly with the bobbin cleaning/ I'll do the cleaning process again and see if the pulsation is reduced.

the brake disc, they just warp sooner or later. had the same on my small bike during my recent trip. I figured out touching the rear brake a little bit first, and then going on the front brake makes the front brake vibrate a bit less and makes the front brake work a but smoother - I gues because of a timy bit less load on the front brake. Now I know tortoise says thank you for saving me by peeing on you! 😂 Lovely roads and views! Fairly hot in here as well (over 30C in Prague today)! Ahh lovely quick glimpse on old Java. Low build quality and cheap, poorly made parts, are things which seem very common on all EVs!? The thing to do, would be to make a bracket to fit the electric bike front forks, after the wheel has been removed, which could be connected to the support vehicle tow-bar, which would mean the electric bike could be used simply for filming.

Remember 1 kilometer is .621371 miles so while Marc is raving about doing 300 kilometers in a day that is only approximately 186 miles which is nothing for a typical motrcycle rider touring in the US.

This hack is not good. If a disk is warped it won’t come back flat by miracle. And fortunatylu didn’t have a drilling machine otherwise i think you would damage the bobines. A floating disk mustn’t be loose when it’s cold. 😮
