It's impossible to take the ridiculous character names seriously in a story about domestic violence. Lily Blossom Bloom runs a florists', Atlas is the centre of her whole world, and Ryle gets easily riled up. Hoover clearly doesn't believe in subtlety.

It genuinely baffles me that Colleen Hoover used to be a social worker before becoming a writer, as you'd think that it would make her more adept when writing about topical issues. Sadly, it evidently doesn't, and she seemingly had no qualms about releasing a colouring book based on a novel about domestic violence. Many people pointed out how tone deaf the project was, and Hoover sheepishly had it recalled.

One thing I haven’t heard people talk about is that the movie is also represented as the book is in the way of they are advertised as romance even though if you read the book or watch the movie that that’s not the case, and I’m not exactly sure if it’s all Colleen Hoover’s fault but for people that were on the booktok you would know that people would call it a romance. They’ll put it in the romance section and book stories like it was a lot
@megansinor6575
@megansinor6575 Ай бұрын
I agree, the way it’s being marketed matches the novel but not the director’s vision of the film. Justin seems to genuinely have wanted an earnest film about an abusive relationship but with the promotion and Ryan Reynolds popping up in interviews as a joke a lot of that gets lost. I never thought that Colleen Hoover approached DV in an appropriate way in the book because even though I get it’s important to humanise Ryle to show how relationships develop like this with his charm, charisma, manipulation, weaponising his personal trauma and how hard it becomes to leave people like this. I definitely think she romanticised this story in a way that missed other opportunities to write a more powerful novel.
@KikiG-vm7jz

Colleen Hoover is known as a romance writer in the book community. She only associates with other romance authors and have them promote her books as romance. Romance sells better, so that's why Colleen Hoover has always marketed her books as a romance.
@tidas.4003

Hoover is pretty controversial actually. You will find many videos on youtube on this topic. Her books are marketed as romance, but most of the relationships you find in her books are pretty problematic to say the least. "Slammed" features a student-teacher relationship and, when said student's mother finds out, what does she tell her daughter? "You will ruin his reputation". I have also read about this girl who was in an abusive relationship, but didn't realise it because she read Colleen Hoover's books when she was younger and thought this stuff was normal.

Only 1 actor was representing the movie as it actually is, and he seems to have been shunned. Usually one would assume he is in the wrong, but I’m not so sure this time, Blake wanted her Barbie tour moment and she and her husband were interfering with the filming, plus she was somehow using the movie as advertising for her and her partner as a power couple, her drink brand and her new hair line. I think she may have an inflated ego some how, can’t prove it but it’s giving those vibes

Actually the male lead actor, Justin, was the only one who did discuss the DV in the movie. There are many interviews with him openly talking about what the movie was about. Apparently that was one of the biggest issues between the 2 lead actors. They both wanted to market it differently.

i honestly can’t believe that they messed up the marketing of the movie after the disastrous marketing of the book. i saw this book trending back in 2021 and was honestly intrigued by the multiple booktoks about it, but many of the videos did not give any trigger warnings. the synopsis doesn’t indicate DV either (which i kinda understand because it could spoil the book). i never got the book, but i was so surprised to learn that it had DV in it. it just amazes me how the main theme of the book is so downplayed in marketing. AND NOT ONLY THAT, but after 5 DAYS AFTER THE MOVIE’S RELEASE, the It Ends with Us Instagram page posted resources for ppl going through DV. for DV being a huge part of the book/movie, you would think they would post these resources THE DAY OF the movie’s release or even the days before 💀 it was only after the backlash that they decided to post the resources 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

@@zanido9073 i never said she was a therapist. i’m talking about how disappointing it is that they’re downplaying the main message of the movie and are actively trying to avoid talking about it. they don’t have to talk about it constantly, but a couple of answers to interviewer’s questions certainly wouldn’t hurt. she literally joked when an interviewer asked a question about how she would respond if ppl shared their stories with DV with her, and it was uncomfortable to watch. it’s just all very tone deaf. also, trigger warnings should be a thing. a person should always know what they’re getting into, especially if the material has the potential to bring up past traumas someone has experienced.

So one important thing to understand here is that Justin Baldoni has a history of addressing things like toxic hypermasculinity and having tough talks amongst men in several of his own past projects for a number of years now. Sad to see not a lot of people doing research about this b/c if you look at his past works it speaks for itself. He's a great example of a person that's done the work to better himself and is dedicated to his cause. From what I can tell the film was clearly another project to support this mission but not everyone is always as dedicated to supporting a larger cause outside of themselves. For him to be sidelined in such a way as the film's director is so disrespectful.

I didn't think the UK and US were much different, but atleast here, the age ratings would also come with a few general trigger warnings related to the genre, including warnings of violence, blood, sex or gore atleast? I really really love to look at art with the hopes that everything that has been done leading up to release was THOUGHTFULLY worked on and released with the best intentions. the optimist in me wants to believe that the idea of releasing the movie in such a matter is a social statement, as DV still runs rampant and people seem to treat "non violent DV" as "not as bad". so the idea that audiences are being guided into an artistic expression (a. k. a a movie) and then get surprised with all this craziness, would that NOT have been the writers and directors intention? to make a statement? ...... sadly the pessimist in me feels this is the same thing as people trying to make money without considering collateral damage. ..... overall, IMHO, the artists have their work and it's their choice how to release it and audience/onlookers have to take SOME responsibility for what they decide to consume. (you wouldn't get offended by a painting when you think it's about one thing and it turns out to be another.)

Scarlett gets along with her costars.
