A slingshot probably isn’t the most efficient as your high and instant acceleration from the slingshot is almost instantly cancelled out by your mass. Would a lower acceleration and longer lasting launcher be better?

Problem is all of the launch methods are 'Go up' and not 'Lift off' constant thrust is not the name of the game, it is 'Go fast' and 'gotta blast'

it really depends. the game has a problem with "optimization" vs "speed". The faster a run ends, the faster you get money to spend on more upgrades. The slower a run ends, the more money you get from that run. Generally speaking, sonic drives are the key to fast, and with some minor optimizations (waiting till you fall back under terminal velocity), you can get through the game's story objectives pretty quickly. Payloads change things a bit, though. Payloads cannot be reduced, so the heavier the payload, the heavier your build to deal with it. Not including the full catalog unlocked over a multitude of runs, you want anything "omega" (from certain challenge medals), sonic bursts, and shuttle rockets, depending on what you are trying to do. shuttle rockets help the payloads, sonic bursts for "reach height quickly" and shatter the moon. If DF is making any big mistakes, it is simply burning the sonic bursts at greatly reduced effectiveness by not waiting to leave the red to fire the next one (or re-aiming when hitting a hazard first).
