The original radiators in the Humvees were leaned back at quite an angle to match the hood line compared to a civilian truck with a Duramax. The electric fan seems the smartest choice.
@tossthewrench3 жыл бұрын
The mechanical engine fan on the duramax with the original shroud has worked great so far with the new aluminum radiator. My temps have never reached 200 degrees. I'll be adding electric fans to the front for the AC when I tackle that project.

Hey man, what fan did you replace the stock duramax fan with to fit in the shroud? I also rebuild Humvees @splitbuilds.
@tossthewrench2 жыл бұрын
There is a couple companies that will sell one but they are basically just cut down factory fans. I cut mine down as precise as I could, taking my time with it, and tested the balance a little with some old equipement thats in my shop. The duramax engine fan won't be spinning at as high of rpm's as a gas engine usually. There are some forums of car builders that get into the discussion more.

There's a lot of "black magic" needed during these swaps. Just be keenly aware of geometry with the driveline after the install.

Where did you find the donor engine and trans? I assume a Duramax is a lot more diffcult that dealing with a cummins motor right?
@tossthewrench2 жыл бұрын
I haven't ever messed with a cummins motor so I can't really compare personally. I just looked different places for a donor engine and tans and came across one that was pulled from a wrecked truck.
@bryanford11393 жыл бұрын
Can't wait to get started on mine, doin a Cummins in mine, still up in the air about trans and 2wd/4wd t-case. Don't want any electronics. Question for you, did you make any body templates to see where or how far you might have to modify/lift the body for clearance, or are you just goin for it(deal with that later)?
@tossthewrench3 жыл бұрын
I knew I needed at least a 2-3in body lift from reading forums on the swap. I went with a 3in to give myself a little more room. I did cut a piece of cardboard that fit the trans tunnel to be able to see how much clearance I had but with the 3in lift there is a lot of clearance around the trans. Seems more for the engine clearance.
@bryanford11393 жыл бұрын
@@tossthewrench I keep hearing that it needs a body lift for clearance. I need to see one in person to see if maybe it can be done without it(maybe modified oil pan). I was thinking about pulling the body, then pulling out the stock drivetrain, then putting the body back on to make a wire-form tunnel or templates all the way front to back to help with mock-up.....also, I noticed your engine is pushed a bit to the right. What made that necessary? My exhaust and turbo are on the right....so that may present a problem for me.. Thanx for responding to the questions, the input is very much appreciated!!
@tossthewrench3 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a good way to set up a mock tunnel that you could work around to help with fitment. The original engine is angled to the right also mostly to make room for the front driveshaft that runs along the drivers side of the engine.

There is a couple places online that sell one that will fit. Modmafia is one place if I remember correctly. They are basically a chopped and balanced duramax fan.

It both hurts and motivates you when you see someone building your dream truck. This is exactly what I want to do with a humvee when I'm able to buy one. Any tips for someone looking to do this? And how have you/will you get it titled assuming you are going to?
@tossthewrench4 жыл бұрын
I understand that. I always saw builds I would love to do so I finally decided to just hop into one. I watched the auction for about 9 months before I found a really good deal that I couldn't pass up on this one. It is titled already. In some states it's not as big of a deal. I would just research your state's laws on it or ask the people at the registration office. Some states won't title it for on-road use if the sf97 form is stamped with "off road use only". Luckily on the auction there are certain humvees that come with a clear transfer form. I believe it has something to do with which military branch they came from. Just watch for that on the auctions if you do go that route. The swap portion just takes a lot of time. You could cut down the amount of time if you go with a company that sells a kit, but part of this for me was to learn more fabrication and custom vehicle building. It really is just about how much your time and cost of parts are worth compared to the cost of the kits. Appreciate you watching!
@bryanford11393 жыл бұрын
Yup, buy from Govplanet.com, and get one from Georgia. As far as I could see, that's the only location giving you the SF97 without the dreaded "Off-Road Use Only" stamp. I got mine in May, prices seem lowest then

Hey. Bud…. I know these are old videos, but I keep watching them. I have a 1165 …. What size Axle gear did u use or stay with stock? Thanks
@tossthewrench5 ай бұрын
They are the stock axle gears. The ratio works just fine with the powertrain swap and larger tires.

Thanks for the information!! so only thing different is the Duramax and transmission, right??
@tossthewrench5 ай бұрын
I did use the new transfer case from the duramax and allison as well. I'm not sure if the humvee transfercase would have worked or not. It might have a different spline count on the output shaft of the transmission.

Ok cool!! I need to know what you had so I can pretty much put the same thing back into mine…. did you get all that stuff from a wrecked Chevrolet truck? Or did you buy all that separate?

What's an estimated cost , both the engine itself , and labor ? I'm contemplating the switch.
@tossthewrench2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about labor since I did all the labor myself. If there is no body work and paint to do, it would take a lot less time than it did for me. I've estimated my cost for everything so far including the humvee as just over 20k, less than 25k.

I havent done the mod yet for that. I explain my plan a little in the stainless radiator tubing episode a little. Once I get it running in 2wd I'll do the mod for it. I'll create a custom bracket that will move it down a little and maybe back some too. Hope this helps if you're going through the same build.

You are building my dream truck. I am curious about the year on the Duramax. I have a 2013 Chev with the Duramax, and it has some shortcomings, including a known fuel pump weakness. While there is such easy access to the engine, and since you're changing the turbo anyway, it's a PERFECT time to update the exhaust up pipe, intake manifold, remove stupid stuff, and change the fuel pump to the CP3. Of COURSE that means more money, but you'll get some power and longevity in return with almost no additional effort. Liked and subscribed! Can't wait to see more.
@tossthewrench4 жыл бұрын
It's an earlier model duramax. Ive already had the engine down to the block. Studded it. New y bridge, new fuel supply to cp3 pump. Checked injector balance rates. And a bunch of other stuff. That was all before I had thought about creating the channel or I definitely would have recorded some videos on that too.

What is absolutely necessary for a dmax swap?
@tossthewrench2 жыл бұрын
Engine, transmission, transfer case, wire harness and ecm/tcm, engine mounts, transmission cross member mount, drive shafts, body lift, fuel tank mounting modifications (or your driveshaft will hit), fueling upgrades (duramax requires more than the 6.2 or 6.5), shifters, throttle pedal, modified engine fan, intercooler, intercooler tubing, exhaust, steering modification, a way to read engine and transmission info (gauges), 12 volt system. I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff tho
