It's been so refreshing to have friends like Craig and Victoria. Finding & maintaining friendships on the road is one of the more difficult things of full timing - especially if you are more introverted like Kalyn and myself (I know...we don't seem that way on KZbin! But it's true!) In real time today was a super super sad day because it was the day we went our separate ways after 95 days of doing life together. But it's not a goodbye - it's always a see you later with them. -J

The process of breaking in new drum brakes, also known as "bedding", involves heating and cooling the brakes to improve their performance. This process transfers brake pad material to the rotors, which can help prevent brake fade and ensure the brakes operate properly. You can try making 20 "complete stops" from 30 mph, or 20 "slow-downs" from 50 mph to 20 mph using light to moderate pedal pressure. You can also try hitting the brakes for about 3 seconds every half mile while driving The first 500 miles are considered the most important for breaking in new brakes. If you don't bed in your brakes, you might experience "brake judder", which is a vibration that can be felt through the steering wheel and suspension

It is always good to learn how to do things on your home, never know when you will need to know. Trin is so sweet giving the bunny kisses. Replacing the entire loaded set you did is better than just doing the brakes I think, but I live in the rust belt. They have been great when ever I need things for trailering. Glad to see they are working with you guys. Really enjoy your videos. Something my husband and I learned after two back to back RV camping trips which resulted in 2 blown tires and one shredded tire…check the expiration date on tires - usually 6 years after manufacturing. Even if the tire has never been used, they’re not reliable after those 6 years. We learned a valuable lesson that summer.

I'll have to play closer attention to that. It does appear from the comments section (and my online research) that Carlisle in particular doesn't have a great track record when it comes to this specific issue - but I will be checking my manufacture dates as well going forward. -J

I pull a similar sized 5th wheel to yours and I switched to 10 ply tires about 6 years ago. Now, I dont pull near the miles you do, but I am sure my tires give way better performance than 6 or 8 ply.

This was a 10 ply tire if you can believe it!! 👀 I'm thinking I may go to 12 or 14 but from the comments section in here I've been feeling pretty confident that this specific brand is just utter garbage. -J

As someone that has owned older and newer 5th wheels, I'm convinced the older 5th wheels had better frames and construction quality. I would NEVER take our new trailer to Alaska (already have frame issues on smooth roads), but I wouldn't hesitate taking our older one. Please make an investment in 14 ply commercial truck tires for your trailer (Sailun or equiv.); trust me it is the best investment you can make for piece of mind and safety. Fun to watch you guys!

I'm generally convinced of the same (older is generally better). This girl needs some work and we've toyed with when will we know that it's the right time to shop for a different rig but both of us are quite nervous that so many of the newer rigs just aren't as sturdy. We abuse this rig and she keeps trucking. -J

a few weeks ago we were returning from Cody Wy. We had crossed the Bighorn mountains and were going through Moorcroft Wy when a tire on the RV blew. It didn't just go flat, it disintegrated. I pulled over and pulled out the spare, an original tire from 2012. Put it on, checked the air pressure and proceeded. Just 20 miles later that tire disintegrated as well. We pulled into a COOP in Upton Wy and they had tires. So we got two. Now I'm concerned about RV tires in general.
@OpenRoading2 ай бұрын
I do know from experience that a 10 year old tire generally won't hold up. I had that happen on a live truck back in my news photographer life. Flat tire - replaced it with the spare that had never been replaced in probably over a decade - and it fell apart within a few miles. Many people here in the comments are saying you should replace your RV tires every 3-4 years regardless of wear. To me that seems a little extreme BUT...with the amount that we travel it's probably not bad advice. -J

Y’all are such good sports ❤ I am so happy that eTrailer reached out to you guys , so awesome and that they gave you new wheels. I wondered if those two tires that lost the tread were like re-treaded tires as opposed to brand new tires? If you paid for brand new tires, something isn’t right with the people you bought them from. It’s always great to have friends to travel with, especially if you need an extra set of hands. Still loving your videos please stay safe and enjoy the rest of your journey.❤

Supposedly the tires were brand new when we got them in 2020. They still had tread left. The comments section here has been cathartic for me because so many other people have had the exact same problem with the brand. -J

Good job on the brakes. The bearings are the hardest metal on your rig. They are good as long as they aren't scored up. You should save at least 1 hub in case you lock or burn one up. It's probably expensive to get a replacement in Alaska. Happy traveling....

I've been towing for 35+ years. Had Carlisles one time and 5 of 5 failed. The spare failed before it was ever used! I am religious about loading and pressures - so that's not the problem. I've never had that kind of failure rate on any other tires. I did have one Maxxis tire suffer a slipped belt and that was replaced under warranty.

I'm a used car dealer, back when I first started I rented UHaul auto transports until I got my own trailer. I remember one day I went to rent the UHaul and one of the tires had nothing on it. I don't mean that it was worn out, the tire had just delaminated and it was just a carcass with the treads peeled off. The tire was a Carlisle.

We’ve been RVing since the ‘80’s and one of the most important lessons I’ve learned, mostly the hard way, is that almost everything that goes wrong on an RV is an inconvenience. Warm fridge, burnt out tail light, AC won’t run….you get what I mean. But tires are a whole other disaster. Parked on the shoulder of a busy interstate, shut down on the edge of a single lane highway with no shoulder, blown tire tread that took out the slide wiring, a hydraulic line, the bodywork of the coach, all these things are very real issues. The lessons I’ve learned are to use good quality, name brand LT tires. LT, or light truck, tires are regulated by government safety agencies and are subject to recall if a number of them present issues. An example is Firestone 721 tires that were causing safety issues a few decades back. They were recalled and replaced. On the other hand, ST tires are not regulated, and that’s why you see so many issues with “China Bombs” and nothing is done about it. If your tires are not LT tires, I would suggest switching to LT tires. And perhaps a brand other than Carlisle may be a better choice. Love your channel. Thanks for all the time and effort that you take to make content for us. ♥️

We spent a month in Alaska in 2019 and had zero tire issues there. It was when I did the Dempster Highway to the arctic ocean. on the way back down the Dempster (I call it the Dumpster) I lost a tire. put my spare on. Had to buy a tire and rim in Whitehorse and we were good the rest of the trip. So you can now say you know someone who did not have tire issues while in Alaska. Sorry you had all those problems. Best way to get there is to take Northern Lights and turn right on Barrow St right before the gas station.
