It Happens Every Spring, (1949), Film In English, Ray Milland, Jean Peters, Classic Comedy Movie HD
It Happens Every Spring (1949) is a classic American comedy film directed by Harold Schuster, starring Ray Milland and Jean Peters. This charming film blends romance, sports, and comedy with a bit of fantasy.
Plot:
The story centers around a shy and awkward college chemistry professor, Professor Vernon Simpson (Ray Milland), who, while experimenting with chemicals, discovers a formula that makes objects-like baseballs-repel wood. Using this formula, he starts a baseball career as a star pitcher, despite having no previous experience in the sport. The formula gives him a unique advantage, and his pitching becomes incredibly successful. However, as his fame grows, his personal life becomes more complicated, especially when he falls in love with a lovely woman, played by Jean Peters, who becomes entangled in his secret.
Cast:
Ray Milland as Professor Vernon Simpson
Jean Peters as Maggie, the love interest
Brian Donlevy as the manager
Paul Harvey as the team's owner
Themes:
The film blends elements of slapstick humor with a whimsical storyline, using the chemistry experiment to set up a fantastical take on baseball. It explores themes of identity, deception, and the complexity of balancing personal life with newfound fame.
Reception:
While "It Happens Every Spring" wasn’t a major box office hit, it remains a delightful and fun film, particularly appealing to fans of sports comedies. Ray Milland’s portrayal of a nerdy yet endearing character adds warmth and humor to the film.
Trivia:
The movie is notable for its lighthearted tone, with a blend of slapstick humor and romantic moments.
"It Happens Every Spring" was a success enough to inspire the idea of a sequel, though it was never made.
Ray Milland was a well-known actor during the 1940s and 1950s, famous for roles in films like "The Lost Weekend" (1945), which won him an Academy Award.

A fun movie, but absurd on just about every fundamental level. First, he won over thirty-five games (!), and lost ... what ... none? Someone from the league office would have been asking questions. Second, with that juiced hop, not one umpire bothered to go out to the mound to investigate his uniform, his cap, or the obvious hole in his glove for illegal substances. Third, he must have been periodically grooving pitches throughout a game in order to avoid throwing a no-hitter every time. And finally, the movie asks us to cheer for a man who was essentially cheating, as one who throws spitballs or corks a bat or takes steroids to enhance performance is cheating. Watch it as pure fantasy, laugh at the many funny scenes, don't dive into it too deeply, and enjoy.
