In 2018 we visited the Phoenix area. 35 miles east of Pheonix area we saw this area in the film. I recorgnized the the Supersition Mountains in the background where they filmed the outdoor shots "out west." 1 or 2 of the buildings are still there as of 2018. It's now a tourist trap sight. At least I can say we walked the same ground as these movie stars, Ralph Bellamy, Irene Dunne, and Patric Knowles, and the supporting players. .

There is something to be said of these old films. Without CGI, Hollywood went with massive sets, in house orchestra, intelligent screenplay, capable directors, and above all. Fine actors down to the small parts. Have I missed anything?

0:17:40 According to the inflation calculator for states money, 1942's 10,000$ would be today as 100 ninety thousand 200-40 dalla, and ninety cents in 2025. That's not to mean if you put 10 grand in a safe in 1942 and opened it in January 2025 it would be worth more... it would be worth the same 10 k, but, her spending 10,000$ then, is equivalent to her spending 100-90,000 dollars on something today.

Some fine performers in a fine comedy. January 17, 2025, civilization about to end...finer. I had an great uncle Ray who, in Truth or Consequences New Mexico, had a small gold mine. He and his wife, in 70s, pulled in a few thousand a year when I saw them in 1950s. And now here comes the fools gold presidunce. Oh well, low comedy and idiotic tragedy...hardly Shakespearean, and there goes the planetary neighborhood, but sick humor, schmaltz and crimes are the game to lay, and one might as well get the most out of the very bigliest least. Lease on life at cut throat prices. Drip drip drip, as the Monster put it. With both a bing bing bong and a whole lotta whimpering.

The cottages prove it... Most fiction, and films, are remakes, secretly or with royalties. "It Happened One Night", the Capra film, same time as "The Thin Man"....post Hayes Office crackdown. Good coy.

I often wonder when I see something like this how much better the film would have been had they cast David Niven instead of the handsome but wooden Knowles. La Cava is one of my favorite directors but even he can't get charm out of a chair.

Interesting. But, one of the things that made me laugh was his deadpan fast delivery. Such as when he’s about to be shot and calmly says “you’d be doing me a favor.” 😂
@ilprofessore10012
@ilprofessore10012 15 күн бұрын
@@lynndalton733 I think Knowles did a competent job, but he lacked that essential ingredient for stardom, some call it charisma, others sex-appeal. We have only to imagine what a Cary Grant or a Niven would have done with such a role. Grant is even stuffier than Knowles in BRINGING UP BABY, but he knew how to overplay sometimes underplay that quality for comedy. The script for LADY IN A JAM is first-rate, as is La Cava's direction, but Knowles just reads lines most of the time. Sometimes that deadpan delivery helps, most of the time not. This is one of those scripts someone should remake.

@@ilprofessore10012 I must agree with you on your points and oh! Yaasss! Cary Grant! He can really make me laugh sometimes. One of my faves. To be honest, I’ve never made it through “bringing up baby” that I can recall. I wonder if that’s because of the performances? I’m going to watch it again soon. It may be un-American but I do not put Katherine Hepburn at the top of my list. I enjoy these old movies. “The Ghost & Mrs Muir” Id watch anytime. We could go on for day’s discussing! If you can find some of the pre-code they tend to be hilarious as well. There’s one I remember laughing at so much but I just can’t find it nor recall the title. I recently saw a colorized version of the dance scene from “Metropolis” with an added music track. (I’m not sure if it’s one that has been already produced for this movie over the years or which one if any). It is mind blowing.
