In you little test rig try putting a tiny capacitor across the flashing LEDs to snub out the noise. If that works you might be able to make the space to accommodate the small caps and retain the flashing. Alternately you could get a small circuit that uses the output of the pickups to modulate the intensity of the non-flashing LEDs, that would be really nice on stage. Alternately use a small mic. to pick up ambient sound to modulate the LED output.

Definitely try this before swapping out the leds. 100nF ceramic caps across each led. If you are pushed for space you could use surface mount caps soldered between the led legs. Fiiddly job but I'm pretty sure it will fix the noise problem.
@teddeeh4 жыл бұрын
@@deanspencer856 so i just tried with with some rather noisey rainbow leds i got to see if that did reduce the noise, where as it removed a small amount of the nose, when you add gainstages it dosent really make a difference, to that atall. i was asked to put a rainbow led in a guitar pedal i made, and ended up having to remove it due to the noise issue. im guessing there are specialist LED's for audio circuits with no noise, but its not something i have really looked into as its not really something thats high in demand. i would suggest go with straight LEDs. it will save alot of ballache later on. unless as i said there are speicifc noise reduced leds that you can get hold of.
@samuelrogers17654 жыл бұрын
The issue isn't the circuit the LEDs are connected on. The issue is that the small alternating currents in those pulsing LEDs induce a small electromagnetic field that the pickups respond to.

You need a low pass filter across the led power lines, after the resistor for power (put one in line near the battery if required, low value) add a capacitor between the power and ground. the noise is being induced so connecting all of the reflective aluminum to ground as well as placing a shield (again foil) beneath the pickups connected to ground as well will shield the pickups from the induced noise. Electrical Engineer suggestion..' great videos Benn... DEB Luthier
@johnhickinbotham45964 жыл бұрын
I agree Debra, it should be possible to reduce the interference to an acceptable level with a bit of filtering. Also twist any unshielded wires and make sure your earth wires all go back to one place so no earth loops. Don't take the flashing LEDs out, they are the best part of the guitar!!! (apart from the fabulous fretboard)
@lucemiserlohn4 жыл бұрын
I'd use two capacitors in the low pass, though; electrolytics tend to get "blind" at higher frequencies, so it's better to have a ceramic cap (say, 22n-100n) parallel to the electrolytic cap (at 47µ-470µ) to take care of that. You also don't need too high a resistor to form the filter, use something like 4 ohms in series with 10µH miniature coil. You can also use this arrangement in both parts of the supply (feeding the guitar electronics supply like this provides you with additional suppression, but you could use a bit of a larger resistor there, like 32 ohms or the like). The LEDs are actually going to suck a lot of current, so the series resistor in the supply to the must be quite low; with the supply for the active electronics for the guitar you can raise that resistance a bit and get a better supply filter there.
@chesscoachhouston4 жыл бұрын
It would be a shame to lose the flashing LED's. I agree that twisting all pairs and a common ground (though at such a low frequency and in a non digital application this is not so critical) are important in this case the main goal is to simply eliminate the low frequency noise generated by the LED's that is being induced into the main guitars electronics. Proper shielding and grounding all metallic (reflective foil too) surfaces should suffice to suppress the RF. Since BEN already has an inline resistor just adding a non-polarized ceramic cap (around 100n should do as an offhand guess without finding out the actual frequency and calculating it exactly) after the resistor (on the LED's side) between power and ground should work and keep it simple. There is no need for any polarized capacitor at all since we're trying to eliminate the noise and not stabilize the power level here. Remember the LED's are totally separate from the guitars electronics and should remain so except for a ground point. On a personal note... I LOVE your videos BEN :)

Came to insure this comment had been made. LOVE the flickering LEDs. Worst case: remove the flickering LEDs under the pickup. The proximity to the pickup is probably key since the single flickering LED induced the noise when brought close.
@AleesaTana4 жыл бұрын
I was also wondering about using the shielding paint (or foil) around the inside of pickup pockets. Since the centerline LEDs are attached to the plexiglass, couldn't you also shield the exposed/center side of those without interfering with the light diffusion. That flickering effect is so great.

This one was really interesting also...I could see it in Ben's face when the flashing LED's were buzzing like mad he wanted to say, "fiddle-sticks", in a very polite demure kind of way and move on LOL AAAHAHAHAHAAAHAHHHHAAAAAA poor bugger, I probably would have smashed it just for catharsis then started again but I'm attempting to restrain myself from such drastic actions these days LMAO! I know that exact feeling! Well done though. I still love the slotted, blackened, metal-ringed, beast for the 2020 guitar build-off.

Ben, go to Halfrauds and get one of them thingamijigs you put in the power line for your stereo to stop the alternator noise.

I don't generally like "relic'" guitars. However given the concept of this I think it is entirely necessary. It simply did not work looking pristine. I enjoyed the journey and think it is a fantastic finished guitar!

We're watching you because you are one of the most entertaining of the KZbin channels. And I laugh when you make a mistake and fix it in the mix.

Hiya Ben....IMPORTANT.... LIPO cell batteries of the kind you have like to be keep in a storage charge state if left for a long time. ⚠️ They can swell and explode if they are left discharged and can become unstable over a period of time!!! But otherwise love ya videos and talent that you show

Make the LEDs a momentary push button so the guitar player has an on-board synth effect >.

If he could make it fade in and out, it would be great.

Weathering is a key part of the design concept for this guitar - and it would not be a real Ben Crowe guitar without the fire either :) I'd prefer the lose the Fishmans and keep the flashing LED's. Just get a set of covered passive pickups and weather those.

For your LED bleed problem. Why not use the faraday cage trick around the active electronics. Should block most anything.
