Other recommendations: With Avi as bass: Bohemian Rhapsody, Papaoutai, Sing, Can't Sleep Love, Can't Hold Us With Matt as bass: Sound of Silence, Mad World, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, My Favourite Things, Coffee in Bed, Midnight in Tokyo

LMAO- maybe now you might remember why this arrangement won them their first, of three Grammys. They opened with this song for like two tours I believe. It’s all muscle memory for them. Going to see them Tuesday night for the ninth time! They’re so much better than in this video now! I actually cringe a little in their earlier stuff 😂

You got Kirstie and Avi right, the other ones are Scott (the one with the white hair/baritone), Kevin (the one with the glasses/beatboxer) and Mitch (the one with brown hair/high tenor). If you want something similar to this then Love Again (it's an original) For the older stuff (with Avi): Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Hallelujah, Mary did you know?, Aha, Gold, Bohemian Rhapsody, Can't Hold Us, Radioactive, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Carol of the Bells and Imagine For the newer stuff (with Matt): Can you feel the love tonight?, You're a mean one Mr.Grinch, Sound of Silence, Come Along, My Favourite Things, Amazing Grace, 12 Days of Christmas, The Prayer and the 90s Dance Medley I added some of their Christmas songs now that the season is coming

@@officialmortius , that’s probably mostly down to two main reasons. First, that fewer PTX fans are subscribed compared to fans of the other a cappella groups, since you haven’t reacted to them until now. Second, that a lot of the fans of other groups are similar to what you expressed in the beginning - they find PTX too poppy. Personally, I’m the opposite - I love PTX, but only like a few of the songs by Home Free, Voctave, etc. This is purely a personal preference, and an accusation of any group being more or less talented than the other.

What I like about Pentatonix, besides the fact that they are insanely talented, is that they can do pop songs acapella...and gospel songs and country and broadway and hiphop and pretty much anything they want. Besides The Prayer, I would recommend Can You Feel The Love Tonight?, Gold, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Imagine. I see people react for the first time to Pentatonix and say things like "When I thought about acapella, I thought of barbershop quartets. I had no idea this music existed. Now I want to react to more acapella groups." I think Pentatonix "pandering" to pop audiences, as you put it, helped make acapella music more mainstream and brought it a lot of recognition, which helps everyone who sings in an acapella group. Win-win, right?

Thank you for breaking down this video so well and for your enthusiasm. Glad to have you back listening to PTX. You are so appreciative of their talent. I can tell you are an Avi fan. They have such a deep catalog. If I were you, I'd go their channel and go through their songs. Find one you recognize (a cover) and start there. They have a newish album of originals they dropped in February and in October they dropped a new Christmas album. Those are both great. One of my faves is "Run to You". Did you ever hear that one? It's older and an original with 5-part harmony. By the way....Avi left the group for personal reasons in 2017 and Matt was hired on as the new bass. Also, Mitch and Kirstie love to shake things up with their hairstyles and hair colors and fashion, so it can be confusing when you see Kirstie with black hair in one and in the next one she is blonde. They have all grown up so much in 10 years. But the voices NEVER change. Thank you. I look forward to your future reactions to PTX.

For the new one... Come Along and for the old one... Gold (Kiiara), but listen to a couple of minutes of the original version first so you can see the awesomeness of their one take vocal track. You think Daft Punk was tight and on point, check Gold. And, of course, you won't be able to not do Amazing Grace and The Prayer, but really, do Gold first.

👏😄Daft Punk Medley was the first GRAMMY win for PTX out of the 3 they have won. Scott Hoying (tall blonde guy) sings baritone, covers bass when bass has a lead, falsetto, VERY SOULFUL, KING of riffs and runs. Kirstin Maldonado sings mezzo soprano, alto. Mitch Grassi sings counter tenor Kevin Olusula beatboxer, tenor, cello-boxing. Avi Kaplan bass/basso profundo, baritone, overtone. ......Matt Sallee replaced Avi in late 2017 sings bass, baritone...Avi left on good terms and is a solo artist his genre is Folk/Americana.

Oh you have missed so many amazing PTX performances. Of course, they never do a bad one. They also have wonderful originals out. True added extra pure acapella pieces are also among their wonderful performances. Try the preciseness and incredible harmonies of "Imagine", noting how they start the piece as well as how they develop it. Then a pure acapella masterpiece "Run to You". A recent beautiful original of theirs is "Coffee in Bed". Power blower style in "Amazing Grace, my chains are Gone" will floor you as well as their recent version of "The Prayer". I could go on and on.

Hi Mortius :) now that I'm coming back after one year...how about a nostalgic Pentatonix reaction again? :) I don't know how much you've been following them lately (and I can totally understand that you are not so much into them anymore) but I am sure some of their newer arrangements would be definitely exciting... My Ptx fan-heart thought maybe I'd ask :) They have changed so much in the last few years. I love your analysis and expertise on acapella arrangements and it would be so nice if you would return to them from time to time. Perhaps reacting to some of the more complex arrangements like "come along", "Havana", "the 90s medley", "you're a mean one, Mr Grinch" or "o come all ye faithful" I know it is far far away but At least for the next Christmas season I think you would be giving us Pentatonix fans a great gift with this ;) can't imagine any Acapella Group with better Christmas music! Much Love, Caroline!

Also, for pure vocal showcase of Mitch and Scott - The Prayer. Back to back single song covers that are quite possibly the best version ever - Hallelujah (older) and Sound of Silence (newer). Man, I feel old now lmao. I’ve been a subscriber pretty much since the beginning when you started doing reaction/analysis videos, and haven’t missed a video (though admittedly there were a few that I intentionally didn’t watch simply because they were artists I wasn’t familiar with - Voctave and Dimash initially) but Until somewhat recently I never realized the importance of commenting/liking videos for the creator’s growth, so this past week, while you’ve been figuring things out with your out of state move, I decided to go back through your catalog starting all the way back with your first video, and click the like button on every one that I hadn’t previously done so for, but ended up watching every single video in its entirety just because I enjoy your enthusiasm and your breakdowns so much. :D then I get to this video (back to the initial purpose of my statement of feeling old :D thanks ADHD) I happened to catch the part where you mention your senior of high school was 8 years prior to you putting out this video, which made me realize that your senior year was 4 years after I graduated lmao. I knew you and I were roughly in the same generation due to the music commonalities you’ve shared that I also have (such as Panic at the Disco) but I didn’t realize that even my younger brother graduated a year or so before you lmao. Just had to share. And besides, it helps the algorithm right? ;)

Pentatonix have some lovely songs that are more classically based such as Hallelujah and Mary Did You Know. Very popular, but not pop music. A similar song to this is their original Love Again, which I believe was designed to give them fun and a challenge, not to be a sales topper. Also look at their cover Gold which was a lesser known song. They took it to a totally higher level (suggest you watch Kiiara's original for a few minutes). I enjoyed your analysis of the piece and would like to hear more

Fun reaction! I appreciate your enthusiasm, as well as sharing your knowledge and experience. Some commentors will ask you not to interrupt a performance, but when you can add intelligent commentary, please do! If I want to listen to just the song, I'll go to the original video. I'm not much of a fan of modern pop. It's too glossy and hollow for my taste. So when Pentatonix covers or replicates that, it's just "meh" to me. I'll listen once and even upvote the original, but I probably won't bother listening again. Fortunately Pentatonix has a broad catalog, so there is plenty for me to actually love. Since you plan on reinvigorating your Pentatonix love, don't forget the member's solo stuff. Since Avi left the group, he has continued with his own channel and has a growing list of great American Folk, mostly acapella. From his original works, I get the feeling he's not the biggest fan of modern pop either. Start with his _Change on the Rise,_ and you'll be hooked. Kevin also has some incredible beat-boxing and cello-boxing on his own channel. His _Down_ is unique and amazing.

Remember it's KIR-stin, not KRI-stin. ;-). More PTX please! You mentioned that other groups aren't doing pop material with fast beats like this. For more uptempo/fast PTX, try [with Avi] Problem, Love Again (an original), The Evolution of Michael Jackson (the live version that's part of the Popspring 2016 concert set is especially good), La La Latch (a mashup), Can't Sleep Love (an original); [the following with Matt Sallee as bass]: Attention, New Rules x Are You That Somebody, Come Along, What Christmas Means to Me (original), Blinding Lights, Happy Now (original), 90s Dance Medley, and Butter x Dynamite.

My preference is the Avi era, I too have not enjoyed the newer stuff as much. That being said it is nothing against PTX just my personal preference. Even music genres that I wouldn't listen too I thoroughly enjoy their covers. Avi also has amazing solo work, although not A capella they are wonderful.

I know you were trying to be diplomatic but when you said you moved on to "excellent" a capella like Home Free 😬 - Their "EDM" original Love Again is 🔥 since you appreciated Daft Punk. It was done the same year. - You should check out their At Home EP since you were about the professional precision of their timing. These were done during quarentine. They arranged over Zoom, set up home studios, learned the software and recorded their own parts themselves - same with the videos, filming themselves - then sent their files off to be pieced together. They were never in the same place together and all the songs are great. You might like Dreams, originally by The Cranberries, because it is all harmony no beat, but there's also the Home medley, When The Party's Over, Break My Heart, Blinding Lights and Cologne (which doesn't have a video because they thought the portrait square format didn't suit it). - Their newest single The Prayer is their most ambitious arrangement yet. It's a Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli belter, not pop and is widely thought to be their best, also. It certainly shows off what every individual is capable of. They did layer their vocals in the background, but since you don't mind that with other a capella artists I assume that isn't an issue.

Glad you finally woke up and decided to listen to those of us who love Pentatonix. They have grown over the eight years since you last heard them just like you have grown. While they may be a pop group, that doesn't mean you can't appreciate the talent that they have. Also, you sounded pretty dumb when you called yourself a lover of acapella but stated you didn't care for Pentatonix. And BTW, most reactors really get a big boost when they add Pentatonix to their programs. You probably will to but remember you stated you didn't care for them so Pentatonix lovers may just pass you by. I will suggest Amazing Grace to you as it is wonderful and gives me a good feeling.

I don't think he sounded dumb at all. He explained that he just didn't prefer their main genre which is perfectly fine. He never said they weren't good. I personally can relate to everything he mentioned. I loved them back in the day and they got me into acapella, but I'm not a big fan of a lot of their newer stuff, not because it's bad, but just because it's not my style. They are an excellent group and I applaud their talent and creativity, but in my humble opinion, I feel Voiceplay is better. They like to push their limits a bit more with their arrangements, again, in my opinion. Feel free to disagree 🙂

@@dieselfreak28 Sorry you didn't like what I said. If you call yourself a lover of something you should embrace the whole. I understand that their pop songs may not be a country lovers taste but Amazing Grace and The Prayer should be something everyone would love to hear. I happen to love Home Free but I can still love Pentatonix. I have never heard of Voiceplay so they may not be award winning like Pentatonix and Home Free. While I enjoy what I like I hope you enjoy what you like without knocking what I like.
@dieselfreak28

@@carolholmes3633 apologies if I came off as knocking what you like. That was not my intention. I actually agree with you here for the most part. "If you call yourself a lover of something, you should embrace the whole" One can be a lover of something while simultaneously not liking certain parts of it. That doesn't necessarily mean they think the parts they dislike are bad or shouldn't exist. I love cars, but that doesn't mean I love _all_ cars. All I am saying is most of PTX's music is not my style, but I'm by no means denying that they are extremely talented, acapella is not easy, and I am amazed by their work, I just don't prefer the music they sing. And I don't want to speak too much for Mortius, but that is the impression I get of how he from him from this video as well. Also, if you've never heard of Voiceplay, I highly, highly recommend you look them up. They are fantastic as well! I'd start with "Oogie Boogie Song" and "Hoist the Colors".

I've drifted from Pentatonix, myself, and while... a lot of their more recent stuff is well performed, I just can't get behind the whole... "we're so intense and serious that it hurts" vibe that they have in a lot of their more recent stuff. That might just be my perception, but perception is everything at the end of the day, at least for each individual. Also, I _hate_ that I'm in a position to say this, but Mike's hairstyle right now... makes me _very_ uncomfortable. I know! I know! It's awful!

I like them, but they are so over hyped and people dismiss Home Free and Voice Play in comparison so I kind of decided they were mainstream and therefore less cool. Still, when they are good, they are good. It's like Perkins vs a buffet that changes constantly. Good music but sometimes predictable because the range is limited. Whereas with HF and VP your mind is constantly blown.
