Throw #5 is a Kosoto Gake variation, small outer block. People are saying tani otoshi or a makikomi or a kosoto gari, but there are portions of those techniques missing here. Watch as he places his left foot behind the right foot of his opponent and blocks him from stepping back. There was no sweeping action or rotational movement which are indicative of makikomi or kosoto gari. Tani otoshi is a drop blocking both legs or feet not one foot.

1:35 is sukui nage as ukes legs are scooped upward as he is thrown to the rear. Prviously it was allowed to slip the hand behind ukes leg.

But it looks like an unorthodox Sumi Otoshi, because I feel his engagement is total and seems like a sacrificial throw. Moreover, throws involving grabbing legs are now forbidden like Morote Gari or Kani Basami, and also few exceptions concerning opponent on shoulder like Kata Guruma is also forbidden in competitive Judo. #5 not sure what to call it but slick af as he hooks the right arm under his left arm pulling it into his body while also rushing in with a behind the foot push trip. Thus trapping his opponent from being able to pull or twist once off balance. Edit: he does the same move on #8 but instead trips with his right foot to opponents left leg while overhooking his left arm trapping the right arm of his opponent. Same move but different foot/leg so looks different by the way they land.

Wrong #5 is Tani-Otoshi #8 is Ouchi-Gari not the same throw, the principles execution are not the same, both backward throws but that is where the similarities end.

Are most of them seoi-otoshis as described or drop seoi- nagis. It's been a long time since I trained but I thought seoi-otoshis had an outstretched leg like tai-otoshi and not done on 2 knees?

Sorry, but I cant see a Seoi otoshi, it's the missing leg that stops ukes step. He is always between the legs of his opponent, it's seoi nage, or morote seoi nage. And what the hell is that AI-comment? Great technics but unfortunately the comments are lousy.

#5 is a taniotoshi, I believe. BTW, his last name is pronounced TorNAY. Stress on the last syllable.

It's not.. Tori uses his left arm over uke's right arm and behind uke's right leg. Tori throws by lifting uke using the force of hara (belly) and the leverage of the left arm. I used to use this technique a lot about 40--35 years ago. The technique doesn't have a proper name.

How are some of these awarded an Ippon, the IJF and The Olympic Regulations both say to score Ippon that it is Awarded for a throw that places the opponent on their back with speed, strength, and control, throwing somone like a windmill isn't controlled, an Uchi Mata that spikes someones neck is not controlled therefore is not Ippon, same with the first throw what the were the judges looking at, there was no control in that throw what so ever.
