Definitely restoration. I would have loved to see this beauty restored to its former glory with new fabric and the whole shebang.

well, it depends what it is meant for. This "Quickie" is definitely saving a lot of money for a museum and people can get idea what a chair of this period looked like. And again you did a great job. But for proper using old furniture it definitely takes a proper restoration. I like that you serve the customers needs 👍

I think restoration has more dramatic impact , however I can certainly see the value of conservation for museum pieces. One thing that strikes me about your videos is the absence of comments from "experts'" who explain how the work "should have been done". Your quiet mastery just shuts them all right up! Bravo!!!!

Ahti, I am strongly in the restoration category. Always have been. That said, you did a wonderful job on this chair. Just think how gorgeous it would've been had you been allowed to restore it. Thanks for sharing.

Another vote for restoration. Conservation requires not only a certain skill set, but also discipline: doing only what is necessary to preserve the item and maintaining as much of its originality as possible. It would be tempting to do a complete (and beautiful) restoration of this piece, but that's not what the museum asked for. Always a pleasure to watch you work!

To your question - What I prefer is regular videos - at least once per week. As for content - any woodwork related content from you will do, even it's multi-part in series of videos showing progress on longer projects. Restoration would look better on that chair, but as I said - I'm not picky - please keep post any woodworking projects on YT and we will love everything you do.

I think this is a perfect illustration of conservation vs restoration. This piece is going to a museum so it’s important not to introduce new materials (beyond what’s absolutely necessary for repairs) and preserve existing finishes and age. If this was destined for someone’s home, it would be fine to refinish or replace the wood and reupholster it (and you do it beautifully).

V. interesting to see the difference. If I was buying, then restoration would be preferred, because I would want to be able to use it, rather than just look at it. But for museum purposes I can see the need for conservation. You always do beautiful work, so I would watch you whichever.

Rule one of museum conservation of anything is that it needs to be reversible. The shellac comes off with mineral spirits and the hide glue loosens when heated. And the conservation repair should be detectable but not, of course, blatantly obvious unless there is no alternative. This chair can niw survive being a museum exhibit and being carefully moved, as required, in that context. What would this chairs original purpose be? Was it along the wall of a ballroom with twenty others just like it, for ladies to rest between dances? It looks like it wasnt made for any vigorous use even when new. Do tell, if you know. Thanks for another fascinating video.

This chair and the wardrobe in the previous video are in the post-Napoleonic style, which preceded the eclecticism of the late 19th century. Interestingly, this style became quite popular in furniture in the 1960s in Brazil, and the style lasted until almost the 1990s, even though more modern and mid-century styles were still very much in vogue.
@Quaker52157 минут бұрын
As a video watch then I think that we get more out of a restoration but it is still interesting to see you carryout a conservation job. Obviously a historically important piece needs to be conserved but when you have a piece that is to be used then restoration us just the thing. Thanks for the video.

Restoration! Unless the piece was the favorite seat of an important historical figure and the upholstery was worn from that person’s regular use of the chair, I don’t see the value of not restoring to it’s original beauty.
@paulsharp471423 минут бұрын
I understand the reason for doing a piece like this for conservation purposes such as using it in a museum display or a recreation of how things were when. However, I think I prefer your restoration processes and finished pieces better. It seems like the work is only half done. That being said this will not stop me from watching your conservation videos or giving them a thumbs up. Thank you for sharing your art and skills with us. Everything you do is amazing!

I like watching both! They serve two different purposes. But restoration i think is a little more fun cause you get to see things taken apart and how they work. Your channel was the first time I saw how upholstery was done and that was super cool! Don't get that with conservation.

I would have loved to see this beautiful chair fully restored, but it was also great to see the difference between conservation vs. restoration. I know for some antiques, restoration can take away the value for collectors who prefer older pieces in original condition. It never made sense to me, though. If restored by an artist like you, to me it raises the value and the beauty!

Qua maggiormente. Bel lavoro, complimenti.
