I don't disagree but technically it is the stuff we sign up for, we agree to give them that permission when we sign up for their services. It’s absolute garbage that so many people just had their game stolen from them. For example, take a look at KZbin accounts. To this day, you can still convert data from an original KZbin account over to a gmail account. And KZbin is a free service. Microsoft could have easily just kept the service up for migrating accounts, but they didn’t, because they knew a lot of people would end up having to buy the game again.

Some games are only available digitally and many happen to he some of the best I've played in the past decade. I'm all for physical media, but also consider digital an acceptable compromise when it's all that's available and the game is under 20 bucks. I'm playing Chants of Sennarr as I type this, which I got on sale for $15, and it's the kind of game that feels made just for me. The experience of a small digital game that isn't possible to own physically is worth the fraction of the cost of owning widely available stuff I hate like Spiderman 2.

Until we have access to better protections for our purchased content, we will never truly own anything digital. It’s the biggest reason I never got into PC gaming. They already do this on steam. If you download demos during next fest and then keep the demos installed, a lot of the time the demos will eventually become no longer playable and will instead have a "purchase" button rather than a play(or install) button

I have many games digitally on my PSN account from way back in the PS3, I still have access to MvC2 and it’s been delisted for years. People are pretty selective with what they try to associate with the company. Valve works with them. And what about Baldur's Gate 3 or God of War: Ragnarok? No, those games sold well, so we'll just bend our standards over them specifically because these things don't fit the narrative. Real problem here is gaming is pretty monopolistic these days and companies can be tied to anything. It's like 5 major entities in gaming that own everything. It's why any spurious connection can be made between these companies.

Some things are annoying but minor: one of the writers wrote a few messages in X in the release of Suicide Squad in which they said that took credit form a lot of the narrative, dialogue and lore text. I do remember where in the text files you can read there was some poor writing like Lex criticizing the patriarchy and praising the Amazon hierarchal structure which is just bizarre and wouldn’t be said from Lex’s character in any universe. That presentation where she talks about threatening companies to accept the changes. The racist quote from various Baby inc employees and others where they say you can’t be racist to white people. Personally, my only real concern about the digital future is cost of entry. If there’s no competition to the digital store fronts like there is in the physical market my costs are going up.. a lot. I buy physical for the cost savings. I buy cheaper and then I can sell on the majority on. Neither is happening when physical goes away.

This... I keep seeing the fear mongering about how we no longer properly own our copies because they are now selling licenses instead of actual copies. But that's how they've always worked according to the law. Whenever you buy a physical or digital copy of Twister or Top Gun, you're buying a license to own it. It's no different. Now the access to those is a valid concern but let me reasure you that even most triple AAA companies do not see any benefit in revoking a license to a player's copy especially for inherently single player games (UBISOFT!!!) They may stop selling it, but why revoke the license? It's just a stupid decision.

@@RipVanFish09 Uh... fully digital games are the easiest to backup, especially when they're already DRM-free. Copy and paste files, lol. It's not like you're streaming everything from servers (unless it's an online service game, but you shouldn't bother with those anyway). Doing the same with proprietary console media is harder and frowned upon, so you might as well sail the seven seas at that point. And you can't easily do the same with the software required to actually use the game files either. Your backed up game files from a disc won't do you any good if the corporate-managed console refuses to play it. Going down the personal backup route makes the most sense only if you embrace digital and can emulate the hardware required to play the backed up data.

I have Steam games from earlier than that, that I can play on a modern PC. It’s not perfect, but physical isn’t prefect either. I feel like when physical media is phased out for gaming completely, the go-to platform would become PC. At least on PC, you have complete control over the filesystem, you are not locked into any one ecosystem of games, and it's an open platform. Unlike the 2000's/2010's, today good gaming PC's are able to be pretty much as small as consoles and fit nicely right under your TV. On top of having much better graphics and giving you access to do anything you want with the system itself, you can literally do everything a normal PC can do. At the same time, you can still get a semi-traditional "console-like" experience on a gaming PC if you hook it up to a 4K TV/surround sound system and sync it up to a Bluetooth (or wired) gamepad. It's also ideal for emulating old consoles as well. The possibilities are endless with PC, and that's why I think it will be the go-to platform in the not-too-distant future.

Ideally, an all digital future would be great. You can download as many games as your storage can hold, not worry about physical space and disc limitations (scratching, breaking, etc.) while companies don’t have to create physical copies and send to stores and releases can be simultaneous online. But in reality, things like this can happen; they can take advantage of their ownership to take games away from the libraries of people despite them already paying for it.

I think there needs to be two things to start for governments to implement for consumer protection. 1st: There needs to be a very visible marked date of when a license is currently set to expire. As of now, they can pull your access at anytime for any reason with no repercussions. Also, any changes to the date need to be updated at least 90-120 days before the new expiration date. These companies are well aware of when licenses that are integral to the product availability will expire, and should be forced to be transparent on informing those purchasing access to when that access can and will be revoked. 2nd: A standardization of EULA terms across markets. Currently all EULA can be vastly different from company to company, or even each individual item from a company, should they deem it prudent to do so. There needs to be a standardization so that consumers are not surprised at there being differences between extremely similar products (movie to movie, or game to game). The average person should not be expected to take up to 15 minutes before or after each purchase to read through these for all the minor differences that could be included. As a side note, I used to do home install of audio video systems and would joke with the client that due to all of the EULA agreements I would have to check off with each TV and component install, that I had likely signed away my soul and every child in my future lineage.

It should be required once you upload a game to a platform it must remain either public or redownloadable forever. I've never heard of this issue on Steam, every game on Steam can be redownloaded so Valve must have different terms than Sony do.
