It killed my bandsaw (not my spirit)!

This is the making of a prototype end-table that expands to fit the space it is in. And it expanded my furniture making skills to say the least! There were certainly issues along the way, as with many journeys in life! Come on in and see how it went, and we'll test some new tools and say goodbye to old (tool) friends.

I enjoyed watching your video - nice build. I am really surprised that you were not able to fix the Delta bandsaw. Not only did it appear that the top thrust bearing was seized, but it appears that both the top and bottom thrust bearings were too far back from the blade as the blade seemed to move about 1/4". I own a Delta 14" bandsaw from the 1940s (bought in the early 1990s), and a Rockwell (Delta) 14" bandsaw from the late 1970s or early 1980s (bought in the mid-2000s). Last year I installed new thrust bearings in the Delta bandsaw, sourced from a seller on Amazon. I then installed a ball bearing blade guide system from Carter on the Rockwell saw. I later found a Michigan based manufacturing company selling ball bearing blade guide for the older hex shaped post of the 1940s Delta, so I bought that guide for the older saw. Another Ebay seller sells manufactured 6" riser kits (increases cutting height to 12") that were compatible with the 1940s Delta, so I bought and installed that kit. Iturra Design makes a “Spinner” quick blade tension release handle that fit both the Delta and Rockwell bandsaws, so I bought one for each saw last year. The same Ebay seller that offered the 6" riser key also sells a variety of other Delta replacement parts, so last year I also bought for the 1940s saw a replacement plug that inserts into the side of the table to keep the two halves of the table in alignment (the original was missing after nearly 80 years). Replacement parts are still available for the Delta bandsaws, even though the parts are not available from the current Delta company. If a 14" bandsaw still meets your needs, I suggest looking for another older Delta 14" bandsaw.

Hello! Thanks for watching! I appreciate the information about the saws and sources. I grappled with the issue for some time -even visiting a Delta service center several years ago, and a local tool repair shop. I got the impression (was told) that I should not bother, so I guess it just goes to show you how important hearing misinformation is and not researching things a bit further yourself. Again, thanks for supplying repair and upgrade ideas for others that may come across this. Cheers!
