I’m so happy that you survived & are here to tell the tale! ❤️ I just lost a friend from melanoma. He was 43. Diagnosed at 40, 3 kids…fought valiantly. The stuff that spread to his lungs & liver was responding to treatment. The stuff that spread to his brain…didn’t. I wear spf 50 and sun sleeves all the time & his death just reaffirmed my choice. I’ll wear clothes that keep me a little hotter than I should be JUST to block the sun sufficiently…not a problem. It’s a horrible disease and when it spreads…🤦🏻‍♀️…it’s almost impossible to stop.

@TarantuLady Tragic loss of your friend. 💜 Melanoma is terrible and getting more common! My husband's aunt just had the third section of cancerous scalp removed (half dollar sized), she has thin curly hair. My elderly dads neighbor had the cancerous parts of his ears and a part near his nose removed a few years ago. My father had a spot removed from the back of his hand. Prime examples of farmers skin cancer; ears, face, back of neck and arms/hands. My husband's uncle lost both ears before it metastasized to his brain and other organs. I know several young people who had cancer removed from their nose and faces already. The sun rays penetrate much stronger now than it was decades ago. I hope the tanning days of my youth don't catch up to me. Now I wear a big garden hat, like Sarah's, and wear t-shirts and use sun screen, and I avoid the mid-day sun as much as possible. I'll even pitch a beach umbrella to work under for extra shade. That SPF clothing can be a marketing rip off, many woven shirts do the job. We can get enough Vit D through sunscreen, but I also take supplements. I agree, its not worth the risks, but heat stroke isn't great either. We all decide for ourselves what is necessary for the moment.

The one thing that some people don't understand is, the reason you want to water until the wet/damp areas meet is, if you just water around the plants and leave the rest dry, the dry areas wick the water away from the plants and your plants themselves end up with way less of the water they need to survive. By making the whole area damp you allow the plants to get what they need and there's a slight reserve until the next time you water

That certainly would be an interesting exercise to actually determine if watering long enough to make sure the water meets in the center of rows. As wide as these pathways are, I would guess that you might be wasting a lot of time and water. I would suggest trying 1-1/2 hours of water on one row of tomatoes, etc., and 3 hours on another row of the same crop to verify. With your experience homesteading and using this watering system, you may have already performed such an exercise.

Hello from Chicagoland, we just wanted to say thank you to you both. Because of your last video we bought the truck kit and expanded it. We just bought a 10.5 acre off grid corn field last year. Our plan is to turn it into an organic flower and vegetable farm. We are going to use this system with ibc totes and a solar generator with a water pump. Wish us luck. Hey guys, another awesome video. I have been using this type of set up for 3 yrs now and want to add a couple of things to help others out.. 1st off at the junction of where the hose meets the mainline add a quick connect so if necessary you can use hose in another spot easily. Secondly, before adding the ground cover make sure the surface is smoothed down and pretty level ( no hills and valleys). Next, trust in running the drip tape topside. While running drip tape underneath is ideal, it is a real pain if your not careful planting. I punctured the drip tape several times by not knowing exactly where it was at and then fixing it can be a aggravating, muddy endeavor. Order some repair couplers for the drip tape before hand just in case you have a blow out. Lastly, in sections you burn holes 6"s apart ( beans especially) go ahead and stake down fabric about every 4 feet in the row. This helps the plants find there way out a little better. Hope the extra info helps.

You also want the emitters up because any debris inside the tape will settle to the bottom. If the emitters are down, the debris will clog the hole. You can use the valves to turn off water to any crops that need a dry period before harvesting. Onions, garlic, potatoes, melons.

I live in the desert in west Texas with nothing but sand and we have to water, water, water. I made my irrigation for my gardens out of PVC 1/2 inch. My rows are only 25 feet. All hooked up to one hydrant. It works like your drip system but has lasted 27 years. Fixed it so it all can be unscrewed and just move it out of the way to till. Good investment that has lasted for 27 years and still going.

I run ez-flo's fert injector and bought a hoss drip set so I could figure out what their setup was for filter, pressure regulator, etc before connecting to main line. Then went to drip depot and lowes to piece the rest of it together and now I know how to build drip sets from scratch with less markup. It's absolutely the best thing I've done especially with the sunbelt plastic mulch. It was a game changer considering I travel multiple days a week so my wife can handle weeding/pruning/watering when I'm not home. Glad more people are getting on this train.

I started using this drip tape system this year, and without a doubt this is the best way. I copied kevin and Sarah’s system as far as the woven ground cover and drip tape and it’s working great. My ground is very sandy. Growing in sandy soil made it very difficult to irrigate sufficiently because it just wicked right through the soil. I also have raised planter beds filled with compost that I’m irrigating the old way and I’m constantly in a losing battle with weeds. I’m using their system on about 1000-1200 square feet. For that garden I believe I have less than $200 invested into it, with plenty of extra materials. If it only last me 5 years then it cost me $40 a year to not have to weed. And since I’m on w well I’m saving more than that on electric costs. I’m running for 1 hour a day and so far that’s all I’m needing. And again that’s on very sandy soil

A funny story Kevin. i found your channell about two years ago. I dpm't recal what the video was but I thought you inserted the turkey gobbles for effect. I hadn't yet seen any of the animals. It reminded me of when I built a stilt house way out in the woods. On the other side of the fence were wild turkeys.We would talk to them all the time.There was also a lot of wild hogs. Thanks for that info....we have been trying to water our garden will rain barrels up hill of the garden. We pump from a low spot to the garden barrels. Found out that some drip hoses don't work without pressure. So was just wondering if this system would work and gravity would be better and what pressure gravity would get to 15psi. We don't want to use the household water as that is trucked in.

@@TheMikeSpike water pressure = 0.433 * elevation of water column in feet. ( no matter how narrow, or how wide. A 35 foot deep lake has 15-ish lbs of pressure at the bottom and a 35’ tall straw would have 15 psi. At the bottom. That’s why most municipal water towers are 100’. That’s what it takes to deliver the required 40lbs that most cities run at. Of course you have friction loss at every elbow, and from the length of horizontal run. And your houses prv(pressure regulator or reducing valve takes it to a level that works well in your fixtures.

You need to add 160 mesh filter ( the heart of any drip system ) prior to pressure regulator. Keeps any sand or silt out of tape ( reduces any plugged emitters ) and extend life of tape.

Best use for the valve drip starts: If you want to feed fertilizer into the system but you have two different kinds - I have a different system for my tomatoes & cucs (fruit & bloom) than I do for the green beans and lettuce (all purpose).

Perfect timing! I spent all day setting up my irrigation system for my new Vego Garden raised beds. Using elbows and T fittings. The hardest part is not being strong enough to push on the mainline tubing to the fittings. But it is really simple and I am splurging and putting a shut off to each bed. I use well water so I use an RV filter off the hose faucet, then a timer and the pressure regulator to the mainline. Thanks for sharing how long you run the system. I am using landscape fabric for the rows that don’t have the raised beds for the first time. I was a little worried about how the water would get to the plants but now I am relived thanks to you! Nice looking garden!

I have read the titles of drip videos for a couple years but did not watch many because it seemed so intimidating. I started watching yours and a few other channels on it. Started talking to my husband about it...and I ordered what I thought I needed. We now have drip tubing in our garden/fruit trees. It may not be perfect but so freeing! We have raised beds for the most part so we did decide on tubing. We are experimenting this year! I have heard that the turn off valves are good for watermelon at the end of the season when you don't need quite as much water for them. We have used them to adjust the amount of water if we need to do that.

I like that this system is on top of the weed fabric you can monitor it easier than the one you had under the fabric!! I have such a small garden 15x30feet then two raised beds... I just installed rain barrels that filled up with one storm to be able to water my beds that are down the hill.... I’ll have to hand water the upper garden as the barrels are on the same level as the upper garden

If your sillcock doesn't have a backflow preventer built into it (modern ones do, but older homes might not have this feature), adding one inline is very important.

@@denslatt Could very well not be a 'code' requirement - but there are some things that really do make sense to do even if it isn't required by an overbearing municipal government. ;-) Backflow prevention is a safety measure to ensure that you don't end up drawing water that has been sitting in the irrigation system into your home drinking or bathing supply. When water sits, it can pick up all kinds of nasties like bacteria and other micro organisms that can make you very sick. In cases like this, an ounce of prevention is really worth a pound of cure!

I when with a 6 zone controller and a 6 zone system for the garden beds and flower, we love it so far. We just got back from a 5 day vacation with 7 days of mid 90s and no rain, and wow the garden was nice

@@samuelblackmon5545 Yes I have some flat drip tape that I use. I buy that online from DripWorks be sure to use a 10 psi pressure regulator on the tape. Good luck

I did not move the pressure regulator this year when I moved the drip tape ( I forgot) and I blew up 2 out of the 5 lines that a had hooked up. At least I was watching it when they blew out.

Thank you both soooo much for this video! I keep telling my other half about this way of watering. So now I can show him!!! And so help me if I have to tie him to the chair and shoot the t.v. behind him, he is going to watch this. This should keep us from having another "watering" fuss. We flood irrigate and digging and reshaping ditches every year is just not happening. My age and R.A. has caught up to me and it is time to make gardening easier and more fun. Or just give it up. If you have a leak in the drip tape, use some flex seal spray paint to seal it up. two coats does the job.
