This STATE FAIR was 20th Century-Fox's third screen version of Phil Stong's novel. It was originally conceived in 1933 as a vehicle for the studio's reigning comedian Will Rogers and favorite ingenue Janet Gaynor, proving a winner with audiences and garnering a Best Picture Oscar nomination. The 1945 remake, which added songs by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, was equally successful at the box office. This 1962 version utilized most of the 1945 song score and was presented in stereo and widescreen. At the time of its release, it was written off by both audiences and critics, but in the intervening years it has developed a devoted following.
