One I played live, with Lee Ritenour?" Concerning which: left this note with Nancy at Sinatra Family pursuant to Alan Bergman's "Conversations with Charles Pignone" today on Siriusly Sinatra satellite radio. "Dave Grusin -- solo, live performance, five years ago . . . My piano hero, at a concert five years ago; one of my guitar heroes, Lee Ritenour, standing stage right, head bowed in awe at his friend's solo performance of this, his greatest movie theme. That's Ritenour's Gibson ES-335 on the guitar stand next to the Steinway. There are two pianistic giants who composed great film music -- both described as jazz pianists, but really more than that: they were what I call 'spontaneous arrangers' -- a cut above all others. Man. … I like the sound of your recordings I wonder how you have your piano mic … and effect processed

I prefer a brilliant piano sound and asked the tuner to intonate my piano that way. So a piano sound is not so much a matter of size than a matter of intonation. I have searched very long to solve the problem of too much reverb in my records. The solution is to keep the piano lid closed with the mic inside fixed with tape under the lid (I use the Applied Microphone Technology M40, which is very good - Herbie Hancock is using it, too :-). The rest is traditional sound engineering (i should mention that I studied sound engineer before I studied classical piano; my studio equipment is pretty good meanwhile :-). The reverb is from Logic Pro X „Goldverb“. I also used the Logic Compressor & Exciter. Please be aware: the most important thing of your record will be the natural sound of your piano. If your piano sounds different to mine (which is almost for sure), your recording will sound different. You will also have to try different mic positions. Each position will sound different.
