The March of the Clowns might have been a bit slower than planned, but it all ended up in the same place. With that in mind, we're taking a look at the 1990 television miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's "It." It's possibly one of the most famous clown horror flicks of all time... despite it honestly not having much at all to do with clowns, other than the main villain of the tale, Pennywise, happening to look like a clown most of the time.

I almost think that curry not playing it completely seriously is more interesting and believable than if he was Stone faced the entire time. Kids are more likely to approach a clown that's acting playful and fun than one that acts more formally. Spider demon needs to eat.

honestly you had to have seen this movie when you were 13 or younger. The book can resonate with people of all ages (15+) but the miniseries resonates deeply when you are a kid. As a kid you're not quite as cynical and can forgive the film's many flaws. As a kid, when magic still exists and Jaws is swimming around out there, what you remember, and can never forget as hard as you try, is Tim Curry as Pennywise. The imagery alone.... of that clown, in that sewer, with his goofy voice, suddenly turning into a demon will stick with you for the rest of your life. You'll never look at a sewer the same way again. You just have to absorb it at the right age. Hopefully the new movie will broaden that aspect of the film drastically. I mean the leper on Neibolt street that wanted to give the kid head for a dime still creeps me out as an adult.
@DemonBoy3223
@DemonBoy3223 7 жыл бұрын
For sure, as a lil kid Pennywise did use to freak me out, especially during Richie's shower-room scene, when Pennywise suddenly shows off his sharp teeth and roars when appearing out of the drain-hole, that did get me as a kid. But now as a 23-yr-old it isn't as scary as I once thought it was, but I still think Tim Curry it outstanding - and hilarious - as Pennywise, especially during his Prince Albert and Running Fridge jokes. ;D But yeah I agree, I hope the new _It_ film is much more scarier, and based on the trailer I say it appears to be on the right track. And I hope with the new one they'll show more potential to It as a shapeshifter.

That makes sense, I read the book first as an adult, never saw the movie. The book was great! Loved it. That got me to watch the "mini series" but I didnt like at all. Tim Curry was great though. The series just didnt do it for me, I'm not one of those that judges a movie by how much he mirrors the book, but this felt a little shallow compared to the book. If I had seen it as a child, it would probably have seen it as scarier.

I live in Maine, and was born and raised here... And I can say with confidence that Stephen King is fucking crazy! He makes my home state look like something out of a nightmare, describing it as dark, grey, and full of staunch traditionalists who still act like its the 1920s!!! But Maine is full of a wide variety of people and innovations! During the summer time, this state looks like something out of a Utopian novel. The winter time even looks beautiful with the glow of white snow all around like a winter wonderland!! Anyhow, I rest my case... Great video Decker!!! Loved it like always!!!

This is definitely a guilty pleasure film for me. There is enough in it that I enjoy to offset the things that bother me. Personally, I always liked the second half more than the first (despite the disappointing ending) because it seems like the film gave up on the horror entirely. Most of the scares in the second half were either human induced (Bowers) or practical jokes (bad fortune cookies). And Pennywise was hilarious. It made for a nice contrast to the more melodramatic (and scarier at times) first half. I thought most of the kid actors did a good job and I was always a fan of the bulk of the adult cast (Harry Anderson, Richard Thomas, John Ritter, Annette O'Toole). It's so silly and campy with a touch of horror here and there that I can't bring myself to bad mouth it. And, of course, Tim Currey. He made the movie. Great review, Decker. This is why I love your show; you understand the flaws of a film, but always try to give it the best rating for the conditions that it is meant to be viewed.

I remember seeing this like twice when I was younger and now I'm just getting around to reading the book. It's over a thousand pages and I'm about half way through, but I hope to finish before the new film comes out.Still the one thing no matter what that sticks out to me when I think of IT is the line "we all float down here." There's something so damn creep the way Curry said that even seeing it on the page I hear his voice and get a little freaked out.

On the DVD commentary track, the actors and actresses note that Tim Curry's characterization of Pennywise was so creepy and realistic that everyone avoided him during the filming. In the novel, Beverly makes love to all of "The Lucky Seven", but Tommy Lee Wallace omitted it from this mini-series because it was just something that didn't ring true to him. Jonathan Brandis and John Ritter both died in 2003. Brandis hanged himself, while Ritter suffered an unexpected, fatal aortic dissection. Richard Masur only appeared in three scenes. This mini-series came out in 1990, the same year that Bill Skarsgård was born. Skarsgård played Pennywise in It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019). In the novel, the group is not referred to as "The Lucky Seven". They call themselves "The Losers' Club". John Ritter was a huge Stephen King fan. In the novel, Eddie Kaspbrak lives with his wife Myra, not his mother. The American rock band Pennywise took its name from the character. Harry Anderson (Richie Tozier) died on April 16, 2018, the same week Bill Hader entered talks to play Richie Tozier in It Chapter Two (2019). Tim Curry is not in the last fifteen minutes of this mini-series. All 7 actors portraying the adult versions of "The Losers' Club" have either been nominated for or won either an Emmy or a Golden Globe. Tom Rogan has a much bigger part in the novel. He chases Beverly to Derry where Pennywise tries to get him to kill "The Lucky Seven". He eventually dies from shock after seeing the Deadlights.

officially turns 30 today! It got the highest ratings on ABC when it came out. I remember i got the vhs. Had to throw it out cause it made me afraid. Tim Curry's version of Pennywise creeped me out as a kid. His performance is magnetic and captivating plus he actually is afraid of clowns. The child actors are pretty decent, but half the adults are just terrible, the plot makes no sense, it's overly melodramatic, and it suffers from so many of the same Stephen King stereotypes we've seen over and over again. Tim Curry even admitted he hated the reveal of the stop motion/puppet of the spider when it came to the ending. There's camp value to be had but I still enjoy the mini series. Awkward and silly but the filmmakers relished in it because it made it so memorable. Plus this one actually did stick closer to the book. It popularized the idea of why clowns are scary then later the 2017 version would go on to solidify it.

A couple of corrections. (a) Eddie didn't own a railway, he owned a limousine service, and (b) Beverly was a world famous fashion designer, it was her boyfriend/fiancee/husband who was the successful business man (he was her husband in the book, but in the miniseries he was either her boyfriend or fiancee they didn't really specify). Also, Mike had spent 30 years keeping tabs on the rest of the Losers Club. He likely had newspaper clippings, magazine articles, etc on each of them in preparation of the possibility that he might need to call them up and bring them back to Derry in order to fight It once more (which he clearly did otherwise neither the book nor the movie could have happened). So that's why he was able to recognize Stan after 30 years. Other than that, great freaking review. I'm always looking forwards to your movie reviews and you have yet to disappoint (well, maybe once when you had your girlfriend join you in reviewing Dungeons & Dragons, she really dragged that review down).

@patronsaintofprocrastination
@patronsaintofprocrastination 7 жыл бұрын
codafett It's kind of confusing, yes. My guess? It had to do with the first time the Losers defeated her. Think about it: she (or whatever it's gender truly is, if it even has one) has preyed on humans for a very long time, and never once did anything go wrong in her hunts. She awakes, she hunts, she kills, she eats and then she sleeps, waiting to repeat the cycle. A cycle which has never been broken. Nothing ever went wrong for it. A big aspect of the character in the book is that it is extremely arrogant, not even considering the possibility that humans can try to fight back. It views itself as superior. And nothing ever proved it to be wrong... until it met the Losers, who not only evaded it but defeated it in battle. This is where it began to reconsider it's attitude: now it saw that, no, it is not superior to humans. These puny beings it despises so much can actually hurt it, maybe even kill it. So it decides to breed, so it can make sure that, even if it is killed, the terror won't end. Or maybe it was the worst retribution it could give to the Losers: surely nothing would screw their minds like the thought that it can breed and make more primal, relentless evil cosmic demons. Facing it was hard enough for them, now imagine facing a whole legion of these things. That's just my assumption, though. How the hell does it even breed... I have no idea. Probably assexually, considering it's age and nature.

I hear that in the original release, they actually showed scenes of that kid being killed at the start. Later when released to VHS, they cut the scene! I found it pretty disturbing when it was released & couldn't take my eyes off it. It was a great show.

Brandon Gray The clown is kind of an odd choice since it doesn't represent a real clown what so ever, but the actor/script will probably do a better job with the character than this one.

Decker, you really need to find a few weekends to read the book.The book explains a lot about the Deadlights (that light that mesmerizes everyone), why the town is easily looks away at any trouble, why only the kids can see It and the blood, why the Losers Club could still see It while adults (and why the ones that left became successful), the mythos of the turtle, why It was so vulnerable in the end, and many other things that would have made the 3 hour mini-series more like 10 hours (one of the reasons that the remake was at one time going to be a limited series like Kingdom Hospital and Under The Dome). Yeah, Stephen King even did not like the giant space spider idea after he wrote it, another instance where he was getting tired of the story and wanted to wrap it up in a hurry (his own admission). The book also quietly ties the story into the Dark Tower multiverse, sorta. I agree with Tim Curry's portrayal of Pennywise, the jovial, comical, seemly "innocent" clown made what it did even more horrifying. And I am not kidding about finding a few weekends to read the novel, it will pull you in and you will lose track of time.

@Quadronnn
@Quadronnn 5 жыл бұрын
@Alexandre Martins I really don't see how the second sentence has anything to do with the first one, or how the fact that teenagers are interested in sex disproves the idea that an adult man who is interested in teens having sex is a pedo. Animals have sex all the time, but I'd sure expect to creep out a lot of people if I wrote a story with detailed descriptions of dog-fucking.

When Pennywise takes the form of the dog to kill the guard, I wonder why they changed it from a Doberman to...a Rottweiler Pug. A Rug? The novel says Dobermans are the only thing that guard is afraid of. I've never understood why they have to change little things like that. People can argue, "Well, it's just a little thing; it doesn't really matter." True, but I say if it doesn't matter, why not just leave it?

in the words of the Nostalgia Critic, "Good old Stephen King. His pros are great but his stories are crap. He has wonderful setups but disappointing payoffs. He has stereotypical characters and fortunately you get to see them over and over again. This movie sucks. The stuff with the kids is ok and of course Tim Curry's a lot of fun but half the adults are just terrible. The plot makes no sense, it's melodramatic as hell, and it all suffers from the same Stephen King stereotypes we've seen a million times."I was terrified of this movie as a kid, I threw out the VHSanxious to see how the remake will do

Not to sound cliche, but the book is 1000x better than this mini-series. It is long as fuck, but so damn good. Trust me, although I find the film vision entertaining, the book is incredible. Differs in so many ways. Basically, the movie is the equivalent of PG-13. The book is a very strong R rating.
