I think the biggest failure is that I barely even find games through the Switch eShop anymore, if I find a new game I want to get on the Switch 99% of the time it was through external media because of how painfully slow and clunky the store is to use

Yeah, it's like with every passing generation (since the Wii) Nintendo's stores have gotten more and more lifeless and like they are putting in less and less effort. As with the load times I like to compare it to Sonic 06 where the reason why the game takes so long to load even the smallest side missions is because every time it loads it unnecessarily loads the entire hub world. With the eShop it doesn't UNload all the pictures you've scrolled by that are now irrelevant, so instead of only loading the 6 pictures you are currently looking at it also keeps the 300 pictures you have already scrolled by loaded in its memory, and that is of course putting a big strain on its power.

I don't see them changing anything about the Switch's menu this late into its life. Most of the reason why the Switch's system UI is so basic is because they wanted it to be as seamless and fast as possible. I just hope that with the next system, the advancements in SSD technology will allow them to include a more interesting interface.

@Wotzinator Not really. The Switch currently only has 32GB of internal storage, so it wouldn't cost anything to just have a small one to store system files on. For downloading games, though, I'd imagine they'll stick to SD cards. The Steam Deck shows that SD loading times can be almost as good as an SSD, anyway.

The fact they don't have music or themes for the eshop on Switch is sad. It feels so lifeless, loads times are bad and searching for a specific is title meh. The only that makes it "okay" is that it works and there's certain colored coded pages & text when you want to see more info on the game. They couldn't even keep the 8-bit Mario anniversary theme on the eshop due to it being time-limited.

The one thing I absolutely hate about the switch is the ungodly amount of shovelware the switch eshop has. It makes the system feel a little cheap that and the eshop always lags and takes forever to load, mostly because of all the cramped shovelware.

@@knuclear200x They didn’t have shovelware anywhere near to this extent. Also, the Wii had sections right on the main page for specific consoles so you could completely bypass all of the crap. The wiiu was the same to a lesser extent. With the switch, everything is all lumped together in the lifeless and bland main page, and it feels like there is far more shovelware than actual games on the switches eshop. I equate the switch eshop as steam 2.0, it’s that bad.

My biggest gripe with it is that it goes back to the top or refreshes the page randomly as I scroll through it. Or going back & forth from viewing a game page then back to the page it was listed on. Its annoying af. Also, I need it in Dark Mode. My eyes hurt from the brightness.

I think every game should have a demo, honestly. There are so many games I'm curious about, but I'm hesitant to buy because I'm not sure I would actually enjoy playing them, despite liking how it looks.... so I don't buy them. I keep waiting forever for a ridiculous discount, but more often than not, I end up not getting anything. I think having a demo (even a short one!) would be good for sales, actually, as more people would try out a lot more games and be encouraged to buy. (And for pc games, for example, it would be super useful to check how comfortably can a pc run it. Sometimes knowing the specs isn't enough. Thankfully steam is nice about that!)

I hated the controls, the movement, it was not worth it for me. If I had bought it even on sale (I did see it) I would have been super disappointed.

The fact that it’s rare to find a hidden gem without searching for hours is why I subscribed to some KZbin channels (including this one)for reviews/recommendations because theres so many games but such a poor way of displaying them would be nice to be able to filter by a couple of options such as genre/price/rating etc

I don't care for the eshop to be fun or that it has music, I just want it to be functional and user friendly. Even the colour background in each game page sometimes conflicts with the text and it becomes (at least for me) a bit hard to read. And I also find it a bit weird how, when scrolling through the games, it doesn't lag as much if I use my finger on the screen than if I were to use the buttons on the switch. It's so annoying. I'd also love to have a separate category just for game demos, so they're easy and quick to access.

The barebones soullessness of the Switch UI and Eshop is an extreme (and wrong IMO) reaction to the Wii U failing. Nintendo seems to think the "childish" fun of the previous system's presentation turned off people. So they went for a more modern, minimalist design this time around. This is also the reason they heavily de-emphasized Miis and Amiibo. They're trying to distance themselves from being seen as a toy. Even Labo is marketed as a educational tool rather than a pure plaything.

What I really love about the E-Shop ion Switch is that when ever you use the gold coins, you could get discounts on games and add-ons/DLC to it. My only complaints about the E-Shop on Switch is that it get laggy sometimes. It would sometimes takes to long to load. I think that Nintendo should increase the frame rate on the E-Shop so it runs smoothly. As far for Switch online, I would love to see exclusive perks for Switch online members like a character for Fortnite, free currency for Pokémon Unite, and discounts for games that is exclusive to Switch online members. I would also want to see Virtual Console make a comeback so people could buy classic games from previous Nintendo consoles.

That is not the reason that Nintendo blocked taking snapshots on the Nintendo Switch Eshop. I do not recall what they said but it was something related the jotting down the games that you see that are you interested in another source of information. Perhaps they want you take a picture through your phone and share it that way. The information that they were talking about related the snapshot issue on the Nintendo Switch Eshop did not mention it at all. Maybe they mentioned something related to credit card information being stolen but I am not certain.

As a dev--I think speed is the #1 issue with the eShop. If they got this thing optimized, they'd sell 10X the games. I also hate the lack of a shopping cart. Otherwise, I think the structure of the store is fine. It's very flat and simple--just 4 categories (new, deals, featured, coming soon) makes it very browsable and subject to impulse purchasing. Other stores bury content under special tiles for sale events, themed collections, etc. They end up having the opposite effect--making the stores totally unbrowsable. Also, I think the trend is away from reviews--Sony got rid of them, Epic never had them. I think they can be easily gamed--it might be better to use aggregate player metrics (total play time etc.) as an indicator of quality?

A few other problems stick out: The genres in the store are basically useless, categories like action, adventure, simulation just aren't specific enough to let you find similar games. The best selling tab shows the top selling in the last few weeks, and there's no option to change the time period. So the "best selling" ends up just showing you the hottest games, rather than showing the actual best sellers of the platform. Games can very easily get buried in the shop which is bad for sales. The wishlist is decent but it doesn't notify you when a game goes on sale, like cmon even psn got this right. I'm not expecting it to be as good as shopping on steam, but those are really basic things they should've added in the first few months.

I think they want to make the switch feel more adult. They might think catchy and upbeat music doesn't match that idea. I recently discovered Nintendo Badge Arcade on the 3DS and it is so fun. I've themed my home screen like a NES Super Mario Level. It makes the little console feel like it's mine and mine only. The switch has lost so much of this charm in favour of this "mature" and "adult" look. They might have been afraid to be "kid friendly" after the Wii U situation.

The Badge Arcade is awesome, I’m glad to hear another person discover it; I’ve been logging in pretty much every day to see what badges are available. Only issue is the badges can start to fill up your SD card space pretty quick (assuming you don’t have a large SD).

The biggest nightmare is buying DLC. Its like there's so many hoops to jump through just to get the right DLC you want. Get this: I own Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum n' Fun. All the DLC are songs, and to get to them, I have to go to its store page (luckily this is easy, there's a link if you press X on the dashboard), scroll down to "Downloaded Content" (its past all the text next to the latest 3 DLCs), tap"View All Items, (its small so its kinda hard to see it), and scroll down the list through each and every single DLC to find the one I want! And you can't scroll down too fast or the page keeps loading! They're not in any particular order either, I have to read every single one and select them individually. What, they couldn't put the items into columns so they're easier to read? Geez, wasn't expecting this rant to become a tutorial on how to download DLC, but Nintendo is so backwards sometimes.

Besides all the back end, Nintendo needs to take the shovelware to task. Use their discount patterns identify and bury the **** products to the bottom of the sale page and prevent 90% discounts for at least a year past product launch.

I hate shovelware as much as anyone but you’d get these fantastic one of a lifetime games say, a short hike. Hidden gems, lost because they happened to go on sale at the wrong time… loads of great quality gems are on sale all the time. I think the simplicity hurts the eshop on this one… a simple solution, allow for sorting within subcategories. Say you want to see what platformers are releasing soon, what sales are ending or what’s trending, but only 1st party games or games recently released within a timeframe, filtering not just sorting too. A logic gate system, platformer and rhythm titles but not sports titles or titles < $10. Nintendo is… unfortunately and ironically Nintendo.

Speed and lag in the eShop is a definite issue. Lack of a (large) shopping cart makes it very cumbersome to buy things like say for instance the (oddly) individual SSBU Mii Fighter costume DLCs together. Ratings would definitely help filter and inform visitors on games they would be curious about, especially given the magnitude of the store's library presently. One other thing I would like to see concerns international eShops; I do very much appreciate that the Switch is not region locked and this has opened up a large array of games I can get, play, and enjoy from overseas that would likely never get officially localized over here or only has a physical release that is available only in the Japan/ Asia region. One of the many sticking points is that if said game I bought has DLC, it requires me to enter that region's Nintendo eShop storefront to purchase them, which is fine, but none support currency conversion unlike many other websites these days. So it is very frustrating to have to find a third party retailer/ website to sell me that storefront's eShop points just to purchase that DLC rather than just allowing me to pay directly.

Here's a tip for everybody who wants to save as much money on their games as possible: If you spend Gold Coins (GC) on a game, you get less GC for that purchase. For example: If you buy a $40 game just using money only, you receive 200 GC, but if you buy that same game while also using 1000 GC, you only get 150 GC for the same purchase. Now here is the tip that will actually save you money: If you only use your GC on things that will never award you any gold coins, you won't lose out on any GC! Renewing your Nintendo Online Membership for example never awards you any GC, so you should always save up your GC for when you have to renew it. The expiration date of your GC is 12 months after the day you aquired them, so this also makes sure they don't expire.

I'm not sure if there's something for me to add, since most of the stuff mentioned on this video, I agree with it. The stuff I like it eShop is definitely the Wish List and Sales & Deals. The stuff I dislike is the speeds and lags.

I'm just guessing, but my bet is that the browser they are using has OS-level access, otherwise it couldn't install and download games for you directly on the system. And for that to work they would need an inhouse programmed browser, probably made by Nintendo HQ, who probably have 0 web devs. The web devs at Nintendo are probably all in the publishing arms, that's why the Nintendo websites are way better, perform better and have way more functionality than the e-shop on the console. And that's also why the US website looks way different than the EU website for example. So, in order to optimize the whole thing they probably would have to strip the e-shop of a whole bunch of OS-level functionality and replace it with a proven third party browser or scratch it and start from 0 inside Nintendo HQ again. Both options that make absolutely no sense at this point. And my guess is Nintendo HQ decided in order to keep the security and OS-level access intact they gonna bite the bullet on performance and design. They definately optimize the thing, but they don't seem to be able to alter the way this thing loads high res assets of everything even if it's for thumbnails or how it tries to spam itself with a whole bunch of items you don't even see before scrolling. And if my guesses are all on point, if they actually gave in and made it smoother, the player probably looses the ability to instantly install the games and would have to wait for an automated server process-chain to first go through all the verification stuff. Worst case the games you buy would only show up in your list 5 minutes after you bought them. The only company that mastered web- and OS-access and made a mobile app that can controll your console on OS level is Microsoft, but their whole architecture is completely different. They even check the game license first once you start the game and not before listing, adding or installing it. That allows them to let the app spam your console with games you don't own, but still be secure in that you will only be able to actually start them if your account bought the license. TLDR: Most likely Security, Architecture and Licensing is in the way of Nintendo optimizing the e-shop on a fundamental level.

It used to be worse. I like how they highlight company sales or Nintendo Direct or Indie Direct games on the home page. To make the shop better there should be: -A curated list that changes genres every week. One week shooters, next racing, 2D platformers, etc. -Once you bought a game it should show up under your profile and you can switch from All of My Games, to My Games With DLC to easily find games to continue with.

I dont use the eshop unless I already know what im searchin for, or the news section says theres a sale on a wish list. we've fallen far from the wii shop days, I miss the retro games that I could buy

So many good point of criticism in this video, not be able to see the price of already owned games and make multiple purchases with some kind of shopping cart. It’s just those things you just expect to be there as the minimum basic. Now I go to other sites to check prices and info before going to the eshop to make the actual purchase.

Issue is that the eshop is actually a web page we go to on the switch. It never saves the cache cause of reason (hacking) and it hurts it more then helps. Like to go into it takes WAY to long and i can’t believe they haven’t fixed it. Like over 100 million consoles have sold. If they made it quicker to load then they would make so much more. Like it takes me freaken 5-10 minutes to just browse the games to buy games.

The eShop not changing isn’t the issue. The fact that Nintendo STILL doesn’t have a trophy/achievement system is still arguably the largest quality of life issue.

Apart from performance it is fine. I like simplicity. I just want to enter e-shop buy game and start playing. That's it. You won't be able to find hidden gems in any of the e-shops like Steam, Sony or Microsoft by just browsing. That requires research outside of the e-shops. Also in Nintendo e-shop you can get the all games from a publisher. For example if I click capcom publisher I can get all the games published by capcom. I really like this feature. Sony and MS do not have this. Also recommendation on other e-shops never works properly. I don't think it is necessary. When I play Dark Souls, Sony e-shop recommends me Witcher 3. Come on... Apart from performance I think it is not worse than MS and Sony e-shops.

agreed. shopping doesn't need to be fun. i don't want music or download animations, i just a fast and smooth shop. but it also fails to do that

The problem with the switch is how bland the UI is, everything just lacks life. I say with 100% confidence that if Iwata was still around. Nintendo would be on a drastically different route, the switch as we know it would be unrecognizable. I know Iwata did the most to put as much love and care into the experience of a console, and I believe he did push to have music be in the menu's while navigating. I fully realized how much we were missing when I got on my 3DS to find all the games I wanted to get before it closed for good. I opened it up and everything from the Loading jingle, to the background music for each month, all the little bloops and bleeps, I had so much excitement again just simply scrolling and looking through games.

mmmm respectfully i don't think that's true. playstation has always been a sluggish mess. In my experience, playstation store rarely loads everything without stutter. Nintendo eshops from Wii-3DS era were simple to navigate and optimized well (with cute music)

I'd quite like a section with just 'Recent Direct' on it, that has all the games in the most recent direct together. It's always annoying trying to find things that came up in the direct, and putting them altogether would make it so much easier.

my Switch Eshop would look like the 3DS one. themes for holidays. music that also matched themes. and you could have categories of like... "nintendo" "indie" "AAA" "best seller" "sales" and inside nintendo you'd have like "mario" "Zelda" "Metroid" "yoshi" "multiplayer" and of course the search option would stay the same so you can browse by price or genre

Also Guardian Signs is made available to play via flashcard with the game fully beaten with all of the event missions to play as well, which is a good thing considering that the game does take at least a week to beat even playing every day. The game might take even longer considering that there is stone tablets holding pokemon locked behind completion of progression in the past. The game is also coded to save your game every time that you attempt a mission in the past, so I would suggest that you back up your game save first prior you make a potential mistake.

Also you need more than 2 people playing the Deoyss mission temple to be able to obtain the attack forme exclusively knowing Meteor Mash. Look up the information regarding the times and the movesets somewhere on the serebii website. The same pokemon can be sent multiple times to the same exact game copy as well. Thankfully all you should need to do is meet the requirements once you save data that you want to have it on. There is also a mission injection that you can do to save files that do not have them. It should work, but please be careful with how it is being used. I do not trust it fully considering where it is coming from. Probably completely kill the battery on your console idle not touching it, and fully charging it prior to playing using it agian just to be on the safe side of your dats getting tampered with.

I might have researched it, and it might have said something like it is recommended to only use for really short periods of time under 5 or 7 minutes or so. I did believe that it definitely mentioned something related to completely killing the power on the console with the device in doing nothing.

I miss the days of club Nintendo, getting the vouchers with games and accessories, scratching off the codes and using them to buy virtual console games, or saving them up to buy Nintendo merch online

Biggest thing for me is speed it should be faster to browse through categories and not fight through a bunch of lag and a shopping cart so I can buy a bunch of games at once. Other things like background music would be nice but I wouldn’t consider a priority

I never asked anyone, but I thought the eShop being so slow & buggy was just me. Glad it's not. Also, I think the reason why we can't screenshot the eShop is due to the page with account info, such as funds and credit card info. One MAJOR feature I want to see in the eShop is the system theme. I have the dark theme on my Switch & I really wish that the eShop used the theme as well.

My wishlist is one of the most frustrating things to scroll. Steam is king here, checking that wishlist is fun. I end up basically scrolling the first few pages of current offers and nothing else now.

Yes I agree with this video. Since I got the Switch on day one I noticed that it was boring and lacklustre. But I thought it was just because it was the first year and they'd update it in the future. Sad to say I was wrong. Compare this to the 3DS or even the WII U shop there aren't even pictures of the characters with special deal images or anything like that. It's just basic UI/UX. Can't believe it's been 5 years of the release of this system and the freaking 3DS has a better storefront and also it has THEMES. Just saying, don't include a themes tab on your console if you don't want to add them. Nintendo always taking 2 steps forward and 100 steps back.

I keep saying this, but ever since we lost Iwata, Nintendo lost some of its personality somewhat? Not just the eShop, but the system in general, Wii U and 3DS had music when you boot it up, Wii U had the talking Miis due to Miiverse, 3DS had custom sounds based on the theme. Both eShops even had different themes based on the time of year or special events. The Switch is just...there, silence, Black and White themes only, STILL. Also yeah, the eShop is just, terrible.

I don't think it's a lack of Iwata tbh. Nintendo as a whole changed their image for the Switch's release, which was definitely going to happen imo after the failure of the Wii U.

The Wii U only failed because the large majority of the people who bought it only bought it playing virtual console games. Also the general public was confused what the extended controller was that came with the console. There is definitely proof of this already talked about online regarding the failure of the Nintendo Wii U. You should be able to dig up the information if you look hard enough.

3. I browse it alot and I do like it, but it's slow and it lags. I like the previews, videos, wishlisting and the prices aren't bad. Plus they do tell me in my email when something is on sale. I would like these things: 1) a shopping cart 2) the ability to gift games to my friends or to the other members of my family account. I want to buy games for my kids, but I have to go into their account and buy it but I have to put the card info to pay each time cause I don't want to save it on their account.
