That fast riff at the end of the chorus, along with that ending harmonic section are just cream of the crop on this album

People are over analyzing Kirk WAY TOO HARD on the back of this album. The dude is legendary and insanely talented. And he’s written what makes sense for these songs. Love the dude. People need to relax. These guys have earned their place as metal royalty.

Metallica is at the stage at the career where they aren't going to reinvent the wheel. This album takes bits from their past, their influences, and rolls it into a great heavy record. Kirk has his style of yanking on the pentatonic scale, and it is what it is. It's what he does. My only complaint would be they're a bit long winded at times.

exactly man, kirk has earned his place as a legendary guitarist. he doesn't need to have any more tricks up his sleeve. as far as i'm concerned, he isn't doing half bad.

Kirk is absolutely a legend, a guitarist who has inspired incredibly many guitarists and someone who has written some of the most remarkable solos in music ever. HOWEVER nowadays Kirk is absolutely a shell of his former self. Most solos in later albums are usually him just doodling in pentatonic and abusing WAH sounds. These solos here are actually ok, but it's also partly because some of the solos Kirk has written on this new album are imo either incredibly generic or just bad. It just sucks that one of the most legendary guitarists ever is not pushing himself to write better solos and is just nowadays writing mostly mediocre solos
@alebarajas3045

What’s weird to me is that Kirk released a solo album/EP that was really good. In “Maiden and the monster” he was sweeping and used different modes and ran through different minor scales. On this album he didn’t. Even in blackened 2022, his solo was Phrygian. I’ve seen videos of Lars directing kirk to only use pentatonic on previous records. (Obviously Lars doesn’t know that and is only going off how it sounds).

@@alebarajas3045 I just listened to this song & granted he plays in some minor scales, I didn't hear any "sweeping". It was much more melodic though, I'll definitely give you that.

This is easily the hidden gem and best song on the album. Coming Later in the Album and not being pre-released was sneeky. This song incorporates every Metallica style and tone ever played in 1 song. Its going to be fucking great live to hear that Harmonized section .

This is my second favorite riff on the album after Shadows Follow! But what I think of now when I hear the harmonies is the recent interview video where the interviewer asked James how it felt to invent a whole genre, and Jame....ever the humble man he is....didn't take that claim. He said his gift are the melodies and riffs he creates. And he is not wrong in that!

72S has been getting a lot of well-deserved praise and I'm glad. It has a few stinky moments, like anything, but then you have bangers like this song, Room Of Mirrors, and Inamorata, as well as a bunch of just plain ole' good tracks like Shadows Follow and Darkness. THE HARMONIES!!!! 😂

Put the album on the mow the lawn a couple weeks ago. Glad someone else picked out almost all the same songs as me as bangers and also stinkers... Could be because I play guitar as well and listen for it specifically... But yeah, some early/mid tracks were a slog to get through. The vocals are fantastic on this album too. I haven't seen any live clips of them playing too far gone. mirrored room or inamorta yet, which is a real shame.. Hopefully they play them live soon. Too far gone and in a mirrored room almost feel like solid death magnetic tracks. Inamorta almost reminds me of Fixxer and Unforgiven III, but as you said, it manages to not feel like an 11 minute song. Glad the album had some songs that gave me that "I need to listen to that again" and goosebumps feeling.

I think the growing consensus with the last 3 Metallica albums is that they can still write good metal songs but just not maybe consistently for an entire album. Take the best songs from Death Magnetic, Hardwired and 72 Season and put them on one album and that is a killer album.
