I don't like the reductive nature of "Scott is a horrible person". The whole point of the series is that people aren't wholly "good" or "bad". Scott's whole character arc centers around him realizing just because he's beating up "evil exes" doesn't excuse his own shitty behavior.

Well, it's been over a decade, I think that's fair. I think the sentiment comes more from the fact that "I don't remember people making a huge deal out of anything back then", and the reason that is, is because it's clearly on purpose that she's 17. It's not like he's dating a 17 year old and the movie thought it was okay and everyone encouraged it, which is what I imagine is what he's trying to remember. Basically, what he means is that he would remember if Knives was 17 and kissing Scott and no one acted like it was weird, but he doesn't remember that (because that doesn't actually happen).

I think people complaining about the show didn't read the graphic novels, they diverged significantly from the movie and did a lot more character exploration like the show. Adaptations which do the exact same thing as the source will always suffer and I think this is the better choice, albeit less accessible for movie-only fans. There are already fan projects which attempt to just shot-for-shot remake the original comics anyway.

The movie isn't even that great. 6/10. The original graphic novel is an easy 9/10. The problem with the film is it's WAY too short to give Scott and Ramona the full extent of the character development they got in the graphic novel. Scott and Romana have to learn to grow up. That's the point of the story. And pretty much all of the crazy video game stuff is all in Scott's head. There's lot of stuff at the end where Scott is forced to look at the real world and his real actions and screw ups.

The thing with Live Action adaptations of animes/cartoons is that it's meant to strike *two* markets at the same time - the OG following of the original series it's adapting *and* the more mainstream market of people who hadn't watched the original or are "put off" by anime/cartoon (yes, that's a thing). With the One Piece Live Action relative success, it somewhat "revived" the desire by companies that hold the IP of animes/cartoons to try (or retry) adapting them into Live Action. So yeah, while they may put off fans of the original it might simply appeal to other markets (for better or worse). Not saying they couldn't be terrible though (looking at the Witcher's whole novel > game > live action adaptation sequence).

anime mean animation that was made in japan To expand on this loan words often mean different things than they did in their native language than in the host language. "Anime" is strange because it's a loan word from English to Japanese, that got shortened and then re-borrowed back to English from Japanese, each time it changed meaning slightly animation -> cartoon -> Japanese cartoons. The ordinary English usage of the term 'anime' is limited by reference to Japan. Try this thought experiment. If I created a discussion entitled 'The Simpsons v Futurama' at one of the major anime subreddits, the mods would likely not allow it, and you yourself would likely be taken aback if you came across such a discussion. Your immediate thought would surely be 'those are not anime'. This intuition is itself evidence about the meaning of the word 'anime'. The fact is, everyone knows that when someone says 'anime' in English (and other languages which have adapted the word?), 999 times out of 1000, they mean 'Japanese animation'. for the same reason that イメージ (imēji) means a mental impression, even though "image" refers to any kind of representation; or that キャンペーン (kyanpēn) means "sales campaign" even though "campaign" refers to any series of organized goal-oriented activities. Japanese borrowings (gairaigo) from English and other languages exhibit this same phenonemon people seem to be objecting to in English borrowings from Japanese. When words are borrowed into another language, it's expected and natural that the meaning will not be borrowed exactly. Even within a single language words take on new meanings all the time. In English, anime does mean Japanese animation now. It's not technically incorrect to use it that way, any more than it's technically incorrect to use "hamburger" for meat not imported from Hamburg. In linguistics this is called semantic change, and it can consist of semantic shift (changing the meaning to something new), semantic broadening (extending the word to more meanings including the original one), or semantic narrowing (resticting the meaning to a subset of the original meaning), as happened with anime and manga. However Scott Pilgrim is an anime, and myanimelist is dumb for not putting on website.

I feel like what defines an anime is if it is from the anime industry. I saw a person from MAL say that you need to grow up in Japan in order for something to be anime. Because apparently you need to grow up in Japan to get the exact correct vibe people want for anime. And that is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. It’s like people think the reason why people like anime is only because of the Japaneseness of it. Also I know you don’t like comics, but you should read Scott Pilgrim.
@SoundsOfTheWild3
@SoundsOfTheWild3 9 ай бұрын
Its because "anime" is the Japanese word for "cartoon" that a bunch of weebs in the 90s started using instead of "Japanese animation" or "Japanimation" because they thought it sounded cool similar to how some hipsters will refer to movies with the German word "Kino". MAL has strict rules on outsourcing and joint productions. Which I can understand given that a lot of American studios have outsourced some of the animation to Japanese studios on shows like Gargoyles, & X-men, but I wouldn't call those Anime either. MAL might change its mind later.

Spoilers, kinda, but the reason why Scott Pilgrim Takes Off goes in a different direction from the movie and comic book is because... It's secretly kind of a sequel. It's a "legacy remix," like Final Fantasy VII Remake, or the Neon Genesis Evangelion Rebuild tetralogy. I wouldn't recommend watching it without reading the comic book and watching the movie. I guess you could go in with just the movie if you absolutely have to, but the movie was being made right as Bryan Lee O'Malley was finishing the last volume, so it truncates the story and ends differently, with way less character development. So it wouldn't hit the same as if you were familiar with Scott and Ramona's development in the comics. If you're not gonna read the comics, at least look up a summary or whatever. And if you go in with just the comic book without having seen the movie, you don't appreciate the returning actors voicing the anime, or the references to the movie that they make. Still think the comic book is the better of the three, but the animation in the anime is pretty insane and it has some great moments.

Yeah, they get on Scott for dating a high-schooler in the comic/manga. The movie follows the source, but had to remove stuff because of feature length time constraints. The Netflix anime follows the source up until the end of the Matthew Patel fight. From then it explores the exes and Ramona learning more about herself. It's a really good ride to the end.

Yeah, I would definitely suggest either reading the Scott Pilgrim comics or watching the movie prior to watching the anime. It's not the best one for going in totally blind, honestly. Dandadan is my favourite manga and I was initially against it having an anime adaptation (I still am) but after seeing the trailer I am willing to give it a chance. The problem is the anime can not do justice to the detailed and insane art of Yukinobu Sensei but I am happy to be proven wrong. Also did anyone feel Pluto had weird visual effects. I think they weren't integrated properly. It took me out of from couple of scenes.

Its funny how when Joey answering Connor's question of why theyre making the Avatar live action he talks about the original creators wanting to realize the world in live action. Bro the original creators of Avatar bounced from that project like 3 years ago, and thats the chief reason i dont want to watch the live action adaptation. The other being i dont see the point, esepcially if it just follows the same plot.

On this what I consider Anime is where the source of all direction design and storyboards come from. So Scott pilgrim takes off being it was entirely produced in Japan despite there being western people on staff and it being based on a western property it is an anime. Castlevania is not anime because the production house Powerhouse animation is in the west despite them having some Japanese animators and it being a Japanese property. But most definitely the lines are very much blurred in a lot of cases. Not to mention the term anime has also become a blanket term for things that are inspired by anime. I will say this the Japanese government does keep track of what shows are produced in their country you can literally look it up. Those Productions I consider anime despite some of them farming their animation services to Korea.
