OMG This episode was so nostalgic for me! I did kendo in high school and that was my intro to Japanese culture! I was one of two girls in the club. The debate over whether or not to practice "freedom kendo" (as my sensei called it) or to wear underwear is ancient and fraught with superstition. Kendo is also the slinkiest martial art because the armor absorbs so much sweat. Whenever I tell Japanese people I did kendo, they almost always say "ahhh, stinky!" in surprise, lol. It is a hell of a work out, running around screaming and swinging that sword over and over. Loved watching the boys go through a kendo practice. That game with the balloons was hilarious, I had never seen that before.

@thedivineofsin9 ай бұрын
When he was raising his sword he was trying to get Connor to attack as a reaction to getting attacked, he would then most likely allow himself to be attacked. It’s a common thing senseis (and more experienced sempais) do to stop a habit of hesitation and overthinking
@SirConto4 ай бұрын
Well, truth be told, even for a master like that, getting a nice clean hit on the head could be a bit of a challenge if Connor wouldn't do anything and just defended. I suppose eventually Connor's focus would be bound to lapse and that'd create the opening, but that would take a bit longer. Natural human reflexes for protecting the head from things trying to hit it, are actually pretty darn good. That's a human survival instinct honed though a lot of evolution after all. So despite being a complete beginner, and despite those kendo master's attacks being really fast, Connor could defend or deflect a lot of them, at least well enough to stop him from getting a clean hit on the balloon. Normally, such focus on just protecting the head the way he did would result in an easier opening on the wrist or the hips. So the tactic against this defensive attitude would be something like small faint towards the head to get him to twitch to block, and then strike the hip or the wrist. But here he only had one target available, so that's out. Ultimately, the kendo master pulls off a kote kaeshi men - so a counter attacking technique; blocking a strike towards his wrist, channeling the energy of the incoming strike to rotate his blade around his opponent's, and then doing the counter attack on the other side.

That is a lot for a "first" lesson. But you guys did pretty good. With a few months I think you guys would be pretty good and train good fumikomi and suriashi Tips: A lot of movements with the shinai are done with the wrist instead of lifting up the shoulders. It will be faster and more efficient. For the men strike imagine just lifting your fore arms slightly and controlling the shinai with your left hand. After hit just try to run through, hitting the back of your head is illegal and if you run into them into tsubazeriai (clashing guards) hikiwaza (backwards striking) isn't that hard if you try it a few times. (If you don't include fumikomi). Distance is something you will have to get a feeling for. But the essential is that you begin form tips touching 😳. After taking one step you should be perfect distance to hit while taking another step (with fumikomi).

I was gonna say I'm early, but the first thing I heard opening this video is "Are you naked right now?" and Joey screaming as if he just got spanked. Just 2 seconds in. 🤣

That was my favorite one of the specials so far. I loved the video game edits. So nicely done. Looked like a blast. I'd love to try it.

As someone who has trained in 'modern sword arts' (a mix of medieval european sword forms and kendo forms), this is insanely interesting and fun to watch!

Watching them in the first half of the vid reminded me, of how I did Eskrima sticks a few weeks ago for school during PE (PH school) and my classmates were having a somewhat "slow" understanding of how some movements work. I guess me playing around with sticks, practicing with prop swords and just... studying a lot of sword styles and movements really helped. Was great tho that my teacher saw that I picked up the lessons pretty fast, did get questioned by teacher and classmates why I used some moves that weren't taught (cuz the whole sword use instincts kicked in), least I did win our PE "tournament" with ease. Thank you, Anime and actual JP sword techniques. Edit:Yeah... the fight segment of vid, is really reminding me of how PE class went, attacking to try to get points. Then again, we fought with 2 sticks and I knew that using feints opens up enemy for hits, so I had a bit of an unfair advantage against my classmates with the proficiency and knowledge. Also is kendo strikes limited to just Left, upper left goin lower right, and striking at the head, or was that just because of how they were taught and cause of the balloons on dominant hand to disarm? (Edit again:Nevermind, yeah it's from how they were taught, so the boys' strikes were just for that 90° angle where the champ was indeed using feints to trip them up and open them for a strike)

For a beginner, Joey's got some good swings.

Such a fun special. So glad we finally got to see the boys try out kendo. Joey truly has the bloodline advantage.
