MrJreed1000 Understand that the worse your team and the shittier the franchise or location the more they will spend to either stand out or feel better..... For example once you are hot stuff making money getting Gatorade commercials and such, there will be more people taking you out to dinner than you paying for them. When you are in buffalo and nobody knows your face because you wear a helmet in the games and you get smoked every year in your division it will get to you. A lot of these players have been told they were the greatest thing since they were in pop warner

You completely missed his point, it's all about relative earning potential. The big money, after the introduction of the rookie contract scale, is in the second and third contracts.

In more concrete terms, he's saying that the present value of future earnings is *probably* higher if a QB gets drafted 13 to the Cardinals or 25 to the Texans vs 1 to the Browns or 2 to the 49ers.
@turk3sh
@turk3sh 7 жыл бұрын
Dennis Zhan due to better coaching, which is his point. On that I agree. But not many teams with good coaches usually have the first pick. Even a team like the Pats in '08 who lost Brady still won 11 games.
@pingas707

Colin said $15mill over 68 years isn't life changing, but that's $220,000 a year to spend. How is that not life changing? That's 4 times more than the average American yearly household income. That doesn't even include sponsorships and the fact that even if you do bad someone might pick you up as a backup.

I think his analogy is the opposite - if your taking over the family business your going to that "winning culture" with a program that works. If your carving your own way as a #1 QB just like when you go your own direction the path isn't so clear - lots of coaches, and G.M.s fired, and you have a very short career yourself. His analogy makes more sense if unless you have a clear path for yourself or have just insane ability like Peyton Manning you should actually wish your going to play for a Bill Bellichik or whoever so you can take your time and learn the playbook.

Eli Manning, Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, Matt Stafford, Mike Vick, Carson Palmer, Jamarcus Russell, David Carr, Jameis Winston, Sam Bradford, Couch and Jared Goff are all the qbs that have been drafted #1 since peyton. Majority of them made/making tons of money and are/will be starting qbs for 10+ years. Too many people have a hall of famer or bust view on top picks which doesnt make sense.

A couple playoff appearances and pro bowls (and throwing to Calvin Johnson). Cam Newton has been with the Panthers his whole career. MVP and Super Bowl appearance. 15 years is too long of a stretch of time.

Jack J Maybe Cam. Unless Luck finds a new team he will be held back and at this rate his career will end early from an injury since they don't want to give him an O Line. Cam was drafted and still has the coach he was drafted under. Whoever gets picked this year won't have that luxury. They'll have 3 different coaches in their first 5 years.

That coach argument is stupid! If you are drafting #1 overall that means your team sucks so that is why the coach is likely to be fired his team isn't winning. That is why they have the #1 overall pick in the first place. You are terrible you change narratives to support your arguments! Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, Eli Manning fit your criteria they will be with or have been with one team 10-15yrs and make pro bowls and super bowls. You tried to discredit Luck but he is a stud and got that big second contract like you said #1s don't get! Can just went to a super bowl and Eli has won 2.
@BruvahSulaiman
@BruvahSulaiman 7 жыл бұрын
Optimus Prime So you somehow didn't understand his point? He clearly said be careful what yoy wish for (talking to a QB who wants to be picked 1st) As in you'd be stupid to want to be picked by a team that is dysfunctional and will likely change coaches within your first 2 years. As in it won't benefit you as a QB to have to carry a sorry team while switching coaches every year. Get it? It makes perfect sense.
@OptimusPrime-dz9md
@OptimusPrime-dz9md 7 жыл бұрын
I get his point I'm pointing out that he is wrong! If you're a first overall prospect QB you have to believe you're what can change around a franchise. look at the teams getting high picks every year none of them have good QBs. A good QB goes a long way in changing around the state of a team. As a confident QB you have to think you can make the difference.
@OptimusPrime-dz9md
@OptimusPrime-dz9md 7 жыл бұрын
Actually Luck proves Colin's point wrong! The Colts were 2-14 so they got #1 overall pick and in Luck's rookie season they went 11-5 and made the Playoffs. Luck also made the playoffs the next two years. As a QB you want to be the guy that does that. The Colts organization didn't do their due diligence and improve the roster but the Colts are still competitive every year with Luck at QB.

Right idea but some of the stuff like "$15M isn't that life-changing" is flat-out stupid. Going to a good team with a good coach is more likely to lead to a second contract than going to a bad team with a bad coach. which more than makes up the difference. That being said, neither is guaranteed and the difference between 1st overall and 25th overall money is massive.

I understand in America theres a culture around the draft that doesnt exist in other sports/countries. But honestly, looking in, i cannot understand why a player would not deliberately make himself look bad to avoid going early. Especially if youre a quarterback. Traditionally on average 3 QBs go in the 1st round. I would be doing everything i can to be to considered the 3rd best.

Collin Cowherd I love you but you not right Eli Manning was drafted number one over all and has been with the Giants for 12 years with 2 super-bowls wins and 3 pro-bowl, that's pretty successful.

It's obvious that the good teams don't fire their coaches when they went 12-4. So is it really the "elite coach" that made the elite QB? Or isn't it more likely that the elite QB saved his coach from getting fired. Next.

He's 100% right that going #1 overall is the kiss of death; but dead wrong on calling Sean Payton and Mike McCarthy elite coaches. Better invest that money lol.

Kevin Heuston great volume player, struck lighting in a bottle twice. Road his elite pass rush to the superbowl twice. always been ranked somewhere between 6-11 in the league at QB. was fortunate to cry his way to a winning team/culture in the draft.

Cold Winter really he had nothing to do with passing for TD to win those games? How about his Elite D went along for the ride And he isn't the first nor the last to not go to a certain team and the way I see it he made the correct choice

I don't think Hue Jackson is a bad coach. The Browns are just an awful team. If you have Jackson a team even like the Bengals, he would have been a playoff coach.

Eli Manning went #1 he's now going on year 13 I think? He's not Peyton Manning, but 2 Super Bowl wins and MVPs? And we all saw last year that he can still play come playoff time. He still has a shot at a shot at another Super Bowl. Not saying it's a great shot, but definitely a chance. So, to me, in my opinion, only the Manning Brothers have lived up to the #1 QB pick.

Colin, I don’t know what kind of fantasy world you live in. But $15million dollars is without a doubt life changing. If you can’t live off of 15 million you have other problems to deal with

If you get drafted to a good team you ride the bench. And if you ride the bench throughout your rookie contract and don't get a chance to play, then you don't get the juicy starting QB contract at the end of it. If you get drafted to a bad team and work hard and show potential even if you lose a lot you still get that huge contract. I don't see the disadvantage of getting drafted by a bad team other than the fact that you have to lose a lot of games to begin your career.

That's more of the NBA philosophy. QB's rely a lot on their offensive lines to shine, and look at dak. Went to a good team with a great offensive line and he got so much notoriety. That doesn't happen if dak goes to the browns. If your a first round quarter back you'll find a way to get playing time so why not go to a good team? If you end up on a team with a great qb then your not a first round pick and that's not who we're talking about here. Good quarter backs need good systems to be great
@harrygarris6921
@harrygarris6921 7 жыл бұрын
Ok I guess by "good team" I mean team that has an established QB already. There are a few exceptions but in most cases a rookie QB won't start on a team that was successful the year before.
