There is a window/door version of the foam that doesn't expand as much. May or may not be available in your area. Nail polish remover will remove the excess that's leftover after scraping. If you need to do this in the future, tape off the area you want to keep clean. Ultimately, it worked, so, job done!💕💕

Just wait until the foam is hardend, than you just break it away or cut it nicely with a knive, and yes you are blowing out the gas instead of pushing out the foam with the gas,. next time turn the canister 180 degrees, works really better. everything is easy when you have done the learning curve :)

Hi Kirsty, Funny story I had with expanding foam. My sister was very ill and her home had big 6inch round vents all over the house which made all her heat escape through them leaving her with really expensive heating costs as she could never keep up with heating due to the vents. So in my wisdom of trying to make her home warmer I decided to take the front grids of and fill the space with the expanding foam. We'll!! The stuff was everywhere! Lol we weren't wearing gloves and we were catching the stuff that was oozing from the vents before it hit her carpets. 😂😂😂 Of course Kirsty the expanding foam is completely waterproof. So was couldn't get it off our hands...I nearly wet myself laughing! My sisters fingers were starting to stick together 😂😂 I suddenly thought. Maggie do you have any flour. She said I don't think this is the time to think about baling a cake....more like the time to go to A&E 😂😂😂😂 I got the flour from the cupboard and spread it on the work surface and told my sister to dip her hands in the flour and then rub them together until it dried up the glue. Which we both done and it worked all the expanding foam dried up and peeled off our hands but not before we were crying with laughter. I hope you can get the picture of the incident and see the funny side😊😂😊😂❤. The window is looking great so far keep up the good work. 👍 XxKathleen from Greenock Scotland

Then one day it was as miraculously fixed when our entire house was torn apart in a freak tornado like storm. The roof was completely blown off, numerous walls collapsed and some furniture was found kms away. We didn’t live in a tornado, cyclone or hurricane prone area. Hi, I don't usually comment but there are several things here. Polyurethane expanding foam is used for insulating, and for fixing frames, plus as a gap filler. You shake the can for at least three minutes before use, not 30 seconds, and then the can is best used upside down. You let the foam go off and to harden before removing- usually the next day. Trying to remove the gunk when it's slimy just makes more mess. Your roof shouldn't leak through the tiles if they are sound. What I see is that you have no guttering, so any heavy rain will run over the tiles and maybe back towards the house, especially is there is wind. Was there a problem there before? If putting plastic over a window opening, as a temporary seal, it's best placed on the outside, and pinned up with gaffer tape under the tile line. Let the plastic sheet drape down past the window sill and perhaps tape it again there or weight it against the wall. On the plus side, this window should look great when finished!
@insAneTunA3 ай бұрын
You are 100% correct. She must let the foam harden, and then it is easy to cut it afterwards with a knife making a mess. And indeed the can must be kept upside down. I had the issue that keeping it upside down was not possible because it was too close to the ceiling. So instead of using the standard rigid clear plastic tubing that is attached to the nozzle I carefully removed that clear plastic tubing from the nozzle, and I replaced that with 1,5 meter clear flexible tubing that is used for aquarium air pumps. And that way you can hold the can upside down in one hand, and hold the end of the clear flexible tubing with the other hand. And then the clearance for keeping the can upside down is not an issue in tight spaces.

Smart idea!

If you have some steel wool, you can try cleaning up the foam residue that was left on the wood. It worked for me once but you might need to touch up the wood a bit. Just don't rub too hard and gentle strokes should get it nice and clean. Use the steel wool dry not wet at first and then the finishing touches you can wet it a bit. To remove, if I get it on wood, then paint remover triangle scraper works fine. You will have to stain again🤷🏼♀️ But you're doing a hell of a job❤❤❤ Learn by doing. Not many can say that. For the roof, maybe in the future, lift the tiles by the crack and seal it all the way up. Although it is strange, it is getting in at all. Check to see if there are cracked tiles or maybe on the ridge a broken or crooked tile? Anyway, thank you dear friend, for making DIY ( did I do that) fun❤❤❤

@PortugalfromScratch3 ай бұрын

@insAneTunA3 ай бұрын
Next time let the foam cure overnight. When it is fully cured it will be very easy to remove the exces foam with a knife without making a mess. Nicely painted surfaces need to be taped with masking tape. You also need to keep the can upside down when you use it. If there is not enough space to keep the can upside down you can replace the clear rigid tubing from the nozzle with 1,5 meter 6mm clear flexible tubing that is used for aquarium air pumps. Then you can easily apply the foam in tight spaces while keeping the can upside down. This hack works like a charm. But you can use the clear flexible tubing only for multiple cans when you do all the foaming at a single day because obviously the foam inside the flexible tubing will eventually cure if you let it sit for too long. Then you have to buy more flexible tubing.
@PortugalfromScratch3 ай бұрын
Yep all great advice! Ah well... next time! 😁 Nice tip for the tube, thanks!
@insAneTunA3 ай бұрын
@@PortugalfromScratch hahaha my first experience with those foam cans was pretty much the same as what you experienced. Also don't let that stuff get on your hands because it is truly impossible to remove from your skin. It can only wear off. And you only need to spray a little, because it expands much more as you would expect, and if it turns out that the first application was not enough foam then you can always add more after the first application has cured. I had to fill gaps between the insulation at my ceiling, and I covered the gaps that I had to fill with some tape leaving some open space at every 20 centimeters or so. And I sprayed the foam in between those open spaces between the tape, and that worked really well. Eventually the tape comes lose because of the expanding foam, but by then the foam is already wedged enough to prevent that the foam drops down before it has cured.

I think with some time and elbow grease or scraping efforts I'll be able to get it off. It was tricky but a learning experience for sure!

You should not shape the foam with your fingers. When it is dry and solid you can cut it very easily it with a sharp knife.

Hi Kirsty! I wonder why they don't put masking instructions on the can? I guess you could use your sander and then finish the wood again in situ? Just yucky all the way around. Imagine what it would have been like if you wouldn't have wiped the extra away! 😱 I hope the rest of the window construction goes easily. The cork is a good, temporary fix. It'll definitely keep things warmer until you get your window. I find chocolate helps with frustration. Apply liberally. Stay cozy! Take care, Angela

Been there, done that. Fortunately in a basement where the learning curve did not show. You get 3 times expansion on that stuff. It keeps growing after you've stopped pressing the button. I'm super wary using it now but it is awesome stuff if you can get the goo off your hands. 😂🤣😂

@okigo10193 ай бұрын
@@PortugalfromScratch There's a product called Goo Gone I keep on hand. Pardon the pun. It can remove stuck on stickers from things too. It's less harsh than other solvents. Hopefully it would work for the spray foam residue but if not is still useful to have around. Available online from major retailers if not in Portugal.

Kirsty, the foam should be left to dry then you can trim it with a Stanley knife. 🤯 Would it help if you extended the roof tiles at front of house to help with water flow. All will work out as you always find a solution. At least you had some fun along the way 😃

Always buy a low expansion spray foam for windows and doors so it does not exert too much pressure on the frames and distort them. It is best not to fill it till you can see it at the edge of the frame. I tape the frames so its easier to remove it. Some of the foams clean up with mineral spirits. The foam is meant to seal cracks from air movement to make heating and cooling more efficient. Check the can for info on how to best attack that problem. That said, it is always messy; a necessary evil I think.

@PortugalfromScratch13 күн бұрын
I think I bought a new one but sometimes you can clear debris out of the nozzle and it'll work again.

Acetone will clean up the frame but you will need to paint it again. You have made progress though, that’s the main thing.

Its best to have the can upside down then let it dry then cut away surplus
@PortugalfromScratch3 ай бұрын
Yep! Definitely learned that the hard way!
@mikefiatx193 ай бұрын
If you let the foam harden it cleans off really easily and you can pull it off in huge chunks. If you wipe it off while sticky you make ten times more mess and it's impossible to get off the hard thin foam residue. You can use Acetone to remove sticky foam while its still wet.
@PortugalfromScratch3 ай бұрын

Is going to do the job but you have to let it dry and then use a cutter and cutter the excess and you don’t do that mess in the wood. I use it a lot to do crafts to mold it I have to keep it wet with water and soap but not to seal anything to avoid insects. Just for your information only.
