Very nice kit… my dad built all the Hubley kits in the 60’s, some even a second time. I picked up one at a show and my son and I built in in honor of his grandfather. One piece of advice, use a very good primer and pre-tap the screw holes. He would run a screw into a bar of soap and tap the hole before painting. Worked great. We still have all his kits in my boys room. Have fun with the kit

If I had to guess, that extra part is like all the other tabs on the metal parts. It's like a sprue, that other oval blob is likely the same. Whoever had the kit before you must have removed it from wherever it was attached, but kept it. Edit, looked through some pictures online. It joined the two body halfs at base when molded.

That part, it's a Flux Capacitor. But the whole experiment failed because the car was unable to achieve the 88 mph threshold needed to activate. 😂. Great video.

That intake for a Viper is really your creative mind trying to find a second use for a piece of metal ‘spruce’. It was probably the connector between the right and left side of the body halves. I built this Packard in high school (1979-81), won a model contest with it. It is still packed away - waiting for more shelf space. Hubley Ford As and the 32 Chevies were 1/20 scale. The Packards were 1/22. The Duesenbergs were 1/18. Gabriel issued (5) brass era Ford T’s in 1/20 scale. All Hubley models have that flash.

Matt, please handle with care. Some minor flash may be carved off. Use of gloves, eye protection and a mask if you go onto sanding or grinding with power tools This also holds true for customizing die cast autos. The alloys used in these cars could be harmful.

I grew up down the road from the Lancaster area in the '50' and '60's and there was a lot of manufacturing there through the 1960's before companies started being bought, went out of business, etc. The whole area was depressed economically before the idea of turning the Amish and Mennonites into tourist attractions for the city folk took hold. Hubley products were plentiful in the area and you could pick up anything they made pretty easily back then. I built the phaeton version of the Packard, the 1/18 scale Deusenberg town sedan and the Model A Victoria as a teen. Your kit has a lot more flash than what I remember, but I also remember a lot of the thinner flash just broke off with your fingers. I still have the files from those kits in my tool box and still use them. Hubley also made 1/24 plastic kits like the Roll Royce Silver Cloud, 1960-62 Ford Station Wagon, Triumph TR3 and a few others. All that stuff is super rare and pricey now unless you can do a yard/garage sale and get real lucky.

Matt, the Chevrolet kits were 1/20th scale and are a little larger than the luxury car kits were. I wish that there had been a plastic1/25th scale '32 Chevrolet Coupe released by anyone back in the day the closest we can get are the Chevrolet Cabriolet released by MPC and AMT in the Connoisseur Classic series and the '32-'32 Chevrolet Panel Delivery also an MPC release that was released in the only nine in one (9 in 1) release in the Gangbusters Series that had both the Panel Delivery and the Cabriolet Roadsters in both Stock and Hot Rod options, it was also released as a stand alone kit as a Budd Anderson Kat from AMT kit, and the roadster was released in a Drag/Street Rod kit with different engine and header options and the wide dirt track tires that are the same ones in the new rereleases of the Super Stock series and the Modified series. They did butcher up the Panel Delivery to make the Barnabus Vampire Van (from the Dark Shadows TV series even though there was never a vehicle on the show) that may be able to be modified into a coupe using a Revell 5 window '32 Ford body or maybe the Monogram Model A coupe kit that was a reissue a few years back but is still available.

On those Chrome headlights take something like silly putty or sculpy or something that will hold a pattern pressed into it and press the headlight lenses into it and carefully try to remove them (you only really need to use one since they're identical) without distorting your quasi mold and take some clear casting resin you can get at almost any hobby shop, Hobby Lobby carries it and while you're there pick up some red dye because you may want to use the same method to mold you some transparent red tailights mix up a small amount and pour it (I personally like to use a small syringe or eye dropper because you can control the pour a keep bubbles out a lot easier) if after you get the pour done you see a bubble or two use a blow drier or heat gun on low and pass it over your lights that will bring the bubbles up and pop them. After it sets up you can take your lenses out and your ready to go unless you have a slight crown you don't want then you can use some fine sandpaper on a flat surface to make it flat and if you don't want to take a chance on breaking it while polishing it back to a shine just spray a good coat of clear on the back side to hide the sanding scratches. You can use chrome tailights and mold the whole light and use a chrome pen or body color paint for the housing to get some really nice looking transparent tailights. Keep on with your shows I look forward to seeing what you and Ruthie are doing now.

VERY neat kit there Matt! When I was in High School, Testors had these metal heavy truck kits that I bought from Walmart... One was a Kenworth T600 with Cummins N14 engine and they were very fun and easy to assemble! I still have them as a matter of fact! I didn't realize how much "flash" those older metal kits such as this one have! Thanks for sharing! Hope to see it built someday!

It looks like a nice kit that has survived in very good condition. It will certainly take a lot of time, work, and modeling skills to complete. But, it should be built into a very nice model with the right effort. It has been very nice to take a look at this kit. It would be nice to find and buy all of the kits in the collection. Thanks for sharing.

Nice kit Matt!!! It does look like a lot of work. I've seen a few build up really well at some of the model car shows. I have some styrene Ford Hubley kits from the early sixties. They also appear to be 1/22nd scale and very nice. One of these days I'll build them.

That intake looking thing is most likely just something broken off of the body, or fenders, probably Years ago. The file is a part of the kit. That zinc is likely to be rather brittle, be extremely careful with the file work. Otherwise you could break the part. That was a rather expensive kit back in the early '60s. A bottle of coke cost a dime back then. Some stores it could be 12¢. That will also take some prep sanding on the body parts, Before you even consider priming it. That will take Alot of work, but the finished model should be sweet looking. As a kid, I had one of the model A kits, that I never finished building.

My father is the original owner of this kit. How did you come to own it? Who is R. Helms ? I am curious about how it made its way to you. The water stain on the box. The cracked windshield frame and the Glad bag were all clues that this was in my family. I am 100% sure this kit was my Dads.

There's nothing about this kit an angle grinder and a tetanus shot couldn't fix. Maybe an investment in a magnetic tumbler to get all that casting texture off the white metal. It won't get rid of the flash and cleanup, but it would at least get rid of that gray cast that is going to turn your hands and everything else around you black when you try to clean it manually.
