I love this! My good friend is from Laos. We have loved eating her food over the years and have started cooking many dishes in our home. We have also loved going to Lao New Year with them and experiencing that as well. I make sticky rice, larb, papaya salad, red curry and Bun Thit Nuong in my home. I know one of those is Viet not Lao/thai but we love all the asian inspired foods. We will come check you guys out!❤

Growing up in California I could never fit in with the Thai, Viet, or Filipinos bc of the same issues. Now that Laos has been gaining some recognition via food and culture, I've noticed a lot of the other cultures that didn't really accept us are now wanting credit for some of our stuff

Might be the stigma of colorism from back in the days of the refugee camps, my mom talks about this but we don’t experience that anymore. I definitely agree with your family, I had very few positive experiences with Korean people as well. Taking Korean in college for 2 years was one of the worst school experiences I’ve ever had because the Korean students were bullies. They called all of the SE Asian students jungle Asians. It was one of the very few times I’ve felt so much shame for being Lao.
