Have the bugs been resolved by now? When this was first released a few years ago, people were complaining about 2 big issues: a noisy power supply, and a ticking or buzzing noise when using line inputs (synths) in some configurations. SSL released a retrofit corrective part, but quietly and users were not happy with customer support or the corporate communications. Looking into this again now as it does look really nice and might work well for my home recording set up, and there's nothing else quite like it. It would be nice to know if I can just buy a new one with the bugs already fixed.

That send output (insert) at the back (1-4) is the direct out for recording. I have the SMALL SIX using D-SUB for direct output of Channel 1 and 2 and the MAINS. I guess for six months having that unit, you should have read the manual thoroughly.

love this video, Love the 388. When I was 15 my dad got me the Tascam PortaOne I used the heck out of it to the point where I wore it out and had to get rid of it, and buy the PortaTwo. That was in 1983-5ish. I have since gotten rid of them but now crave the unit or something like that. I wish I could afford the 388 (they all seem to be available for pick up only on Oregon and well just the east coast) WTH! lol. Anyways thinking of getting the 424MKIII 4 TRACK. And yes it made you a better musician back then, No comping no special digital edits. YOU had to think about what you were going to record and focus on usually one take. I loved it. Rock on!

The Posies album “Failure” was recorded on this. I carried one up and down my apartment stairs back in the 90’s. My back hurts as I write this.

You can use FX send on the back as direct outputs from the preamps. I do it all the time and it works great.

I was just about to say the same thing as the commentor below mine. You can always use the sends as a direct out, and i didn't even realize you could do it pre fader so cool.

When I was a student at Berklee in 1987, I had a friend in the dorms that had one. All of us would go over to his little smelly room, blaze up, and make pure magic (that we never listened to again.) I always wanted one and kinda still do, even with all the digital tools now at our disposal. Just something special about this unit. A big swing at a market that was just emerging and would soon be subsumed by the DAT/DAW revolution just a few years later. Probably the best 'demo' machine ever made. Tape makes you work smarter AND harder.

Every time I see one of these monsters I remember when I was service manager for an 18 store new and used, music chain..every time the guys took in one of these heavy beasts nin trade it was because they were already problematic. Now, I had to find a way to get these serviced. Nope. No one in N.E. would touch them and my guys were amp and guitar repair people. None would touch them, so they just moved around the chain, store to store, waiting for some sucker. I had to eventually put my foot down and declare them OFF LIMITS to take in trade for any reason. As far as I remember they just went in the junk/parts pile. That was during the mid to later part of the 90's.

So good. I would love to throw this in my DAW and play around with it. Im also astounded by how well you know all your gear. Some people are good with mics & preamps, some are good with pedals and amps, some are good with modular synths, some are good with plugins.. you however know all of it like the back of your hand. Impressive

Also, I'd really love a step by step of what is happening here.... even the first 20 seconds explained. what each module does, what feeds into what etc...
@laughingatoblivion2 ай бұрын
@@romestant from what I can see and know of the things being used - in simple terms - sample coming from the Digitakt into the nightsky. Tempo and possibly some note sequencing via midi from Digitakt into the Moog's. Top moog is drums, middle is 'melody' and bottom bass. There's cv connection between them so there's some dynamic interaction though (can't see exactly what is connected to what) and Rhett is tweaking parameters of the synthesis as the jam goes on to alter tones/rhythms/oscillations etc.
