For those who are curious, the producer said this song is inspired by a short story titled "The Seduction of Thanatos". The story is about a guy whose girlfriend is attracted to 'death' and always tries to commit suicide but everytime she does, she'll contact the guy beforehand and he'll stop her. He thought that deep down, she wanted him to stop her. It's said that the god of death will resemble one's ideal person. The girlfriend said that she can see the god of death calling for her and he always hated how she seemed to be in a daze when talking about the god of death. He loves her too much and said that he'd die as well. His girlfriend then smiled at him and asked "Do you finally get it?" and he replied happily "Ah... So you were my god of death".

not sure if it’s true but, i’ve seen comments on different mv’s with similar songs, they don’t have a lot of mental health rep in japanese media, and one of the few ways to show it was to kind of mask it with the joyful tunes. Again i’m not sure, and my memory is kinda hazy so it might not be that accurate

Both explanations are correct and I just wanted to add more to the explanation so you could know the full story. The girl is not a hallucination, she is the god of death herself. In the song, the man said that he hates it when the girl sees something he can't see as if the girl was in love with it. The song was inspired by a novel called "Temptation of Thanatos" and in the story, the girl was in love with death and it was stated that the god of death takes form as one's ideal person meaning the reason why the girl was always staring at something the boy can't see because she was seeing her ideal person. As the other person said, the boy wants to die but he doesn't have the courage to do it. He also said in the novel that the God of death or known as Grim Reaper doesn't exist out of jealousy which made the girl angry saying that she doesn't want this anymore and that she wanted to die. The boy getting tired of everything finally admits that he wanted to die too and the girl finally smiled at him. Also, for some reason, every time the girl attempts suicide, she would first call the boy as if she wants him to stop her but it was revealed that the girl didn't call him to stop her but in fact, she wanted to bring him along with her suicide. He then realizes that his girlfriend is the grim reaper, his ideal person, and finally commits double suicide with the girl. This is the full story if you want to read it. August 15. Even though the sun had set a long time ago, humid air continued to linger on in the surroundings. Sweat gushed out endlessly from my body as I dashed up the stairs of the apartment building. “Goodbye.” Her LINE message contained just this word. I immediately understood what that meant. I had been working throughout Obon and right after completing the preparations for returning home, I had hurriedly headed for the apartment building where I lived. And it was on the roof, outside the fence, where I found her standing with a vacant look in her eyes. The truth is, this was the fourth time I had seen her attempting to take her life by jumping. It is said that there are two kinds of people in this world. Humans who are inclined towards life - governed by “Eros”; And humans who are inclined towards death - governed by “Thanatos”. Most people belong to the former, yet she was unmistakeably of the latter kind. That she was a human being governed by “Thanatos” was something I had known even before I began dating her. After all, the reason for our first encounter was because I had tried to save her from attempting suicide on the roof of the apartment building, just like what was happening now. She was a girl who had just moved into the same apartment building. With her round eyes and full lips, she possessed a lovely set of facial features yet had a delicate expression on her face. She stole my heart in an instant. Surely, it must have been love at first sight. From that moment on, we chatted about various topics and became good friends very quickly. For me, who had been working at a black company and living my life in solitude, she was like an angel who had descended from the heavens. Except, I had one doubt. Each time she had planned to take her life, she would contact me without fail. And she would wait there until I arrived. I thought it would be better to die alone without telling anyone, but perhaps, somewhere in her heart, she wished for me to stop her from committing suicide and help her like I did the first time we had met. I simply took this as an explanation for her actions. And that’s why I rushed up the stairs of the apartment building this time as well. “Haa, haa…” I reached the roof of the apartment building. I found her standing on the opposite side of the fence, with her back towards me. “Wait…!!” I jumped over the fence and took hold of her hand. It was cold, contrary to the humid weather. “Let go.” Akin to the ringing of bells, her voice was fleeting and sweet. I loved her voice too. “Why are you doing this…!” “I want to die, quickly.” “Why…!” “Because the god of death is calling for me.” She could see the ‘god of death’. This was said to be a rare symptom amongst those who were governed by “Thanatos”. And apart from them, no one else could see this ‘god of death’. “There’s no such thing as the god of death.” “Why won’t you understand…!” When I deny the existence of a god of death, she would definitely scream and shout. It seems that to those who can see it, the god of death is most attractive. It resembles their ideal person, so to speak. Whenever she was gazing at the god of death (although for me, I don’t see anything else besides an empty space), her expression was always that of a maiden in love. It was as if she had completely lost her heart to it. I hated that kind of expression on her face. “Don’t look at the god of death or whatever, look at me.” “No…!” Since she tried to shake my hand off, I ended up holding hers even harder without thinking. “It hurts…!” “! Sorry…” But, isn’t this your fault? Because you were trying to shake my hand off. Because you wouldn’t look at me instead. “The god of death wouldn’t do such a thing…!” The darkness in my heart surged forth. “Why…” Why is it that even though I love you so much, you would not even spare me a glance? Somewhere in my heart, I thought it was ridiculous to feel jealousy towards a god of death, but even that could not bother me anymore. “I’m sick of this.” I’m sick of this too. “I’m tired.” I’m tired too. “I want to die quickly.” “I want to die too!!” At that point, she lifted her head. She was grinning broadly at me. As soon as I saw her smiling face, I felt the darkness in my heart dissipate in an instant. Wait, could it be that? “Did you finally… realize?” “Yeah… I finally understood.” “Really…? That’s great.” Ah, I see. The reason you called me each time you planned to commit suicide was not because you wanted my help. It was because you wanted to bring me along with you. To me, she was the ‘god of death’. A cool breeze blew past. Before I knew it, I could no longer feel the heat and humidity from before. “Well then, shall we go?” “Yeah, let’s go.” You and me, with our hands connected. So that we could escape from the frustration the world brings us, We leaped out into the night sky.

The butterflies in the video are a representation of Thanatos, the greek god of death, who is often depicted as a youth holding a butterfly. Thanatos also refers to the psychological concept of a drive to death, according to Freud. The Greek word for butterfly is also the same as the greek word for soul, namely "psyche". Lastly, it is also a reference to the short story this song is based on: Thanatos's seduction.

Tw mention of sh Something I want to touch on, even if she had been real the song would've been fucked up cause no matter how much you love someone and try to help them you really can't unless they are working to get better too and getting professional help. Depression isn't something someone else can love away. It's not how it works. And I think it has been a problem with films etc cause so often they romanticize the "quirky", "not like the other girls", "sad" girl, when in fact they often seem like those girls need professional help and not the main guys love. I think it is bad to normalize that kind of romanticization of certain mental illnesses. It's very harmful. And it is real that sometimes depressed people can pull others down with them. Every one wants to find people like them and connect with them but stuff revolving mental health is tricky, cause peer support is useful if done correctly but it can also turn very toxic very fast. Just look at sh twitter... it's fucked up what they write to each other. And as someone with depression and I sadly sh I too seek people who understand me but it's a fine line between peer support and just spiraling deeper down with someone. When you're ill you shouldn't seek help, support and advice from people with the same illness. Sorry this got dark but I think it's important to remember.

This is probably the best reaction video I watched out of all the videos reacting to this song. Not only did he watch it and actually understand and focus on the story but he watched it once for his initial reaction then went and rewatched it with the subtitles to get a better understanding of an already complicated story before he finished it off with explaining the actually story behind the song by reading comments. Another aspect I liked is that he didn't focus on the instrumentals which I noticed a lot of reactors tend to focus on that aspect rather than the story itself and it can be quite frustrating when they're missing out on vital aspects of the story because they're jamming out to it. 10/10 Video my friend, Keep up the good work :)

Aw that was sadder than I expected. I thought it was at first about a guy in a relationship with a girl who had a mental illness. Then when they said the girl was made from the guy's imagination, I thought it was a sort of Pygmalion situation, where the guy was an animator who fell in love with his creation and wanted to be with her (which is why he killed himself). That's why the numbers in the top corner look like the numbers count each frame of animation and stops only when he dies. Still a frickin bop either way. Can't believe I haven't heard it before lmao

a bit late, but i really like this song because its so nice with the ever popular trope of, love fixes all and we can overcome everything with the power of love, for it to not work out and even turn around on the person who is putting their heart into it but still can't "fix" everything. i struggle with severe depression, and its not as easy as people say to just "get better" and "work hard". I've been slowly recovering since 2018, and i'm miles better than I used to be, but i still struggle with thoughts of, "if i have to struggle every day just to be happy, even if I do get better, it'll never end, is it worth it to keep trying?" it's like that greek myth of the guy rolling a boulder up a hill. there's never an end to it. and you can see the guy slowly falling into the girl's thoughts, and how frustrating it is to keep trying with no end in sight and how easy it is to just give in. the hopelessness and exhaustion of it all, and the relief to just be free. the butterfly is a big symbol for depression / suicide, and I absolutely see the pink as the same. only being able to see and hear what your depression lets you, venting ( crying, vomiting, stabbing the butterflies ), following in her footsteps to someplace better. more than anything, this song feels like a relief.

One thing to note about "sayonara" is that this represents a final goodbye. you're never going back to that place or to that person. it has a much heavier meaning. Which is why it's only typically used during breakups or you never hear people in japan leave each other with "sayonara" but instead you hear "matane" instead which means "I'll see you later" meaning you'll be back. As a conclusion to all of my ranting on this: Sayonara is a final goodbye hence the meaning to 14:04

To add on to the ending theory. I believe the man made up the girl to give comfort to as we saw in the video. That's him trying his best to live on and find comfort within himself. Then at the bridge if the song the girl says "I'm tired of this" meaning the guy was tired of trying to comfort her/himself. That's when she let out a smile for the first time, fully accepting what he truly wanted

late reply but thanks for the reaction! i've always been confused on what this song meant lol also if i can recommend, would you listen to MARETU's songs? theyre really catchy but has a very dark meaning to it, its almost like kikuo's! (warning: though some of the songs and meanings can be triggering for some people!) i would recommend "SIU" or "coin locker baby" if you want to!

I'm pretty sure when it's talking about the 4 character word at 13:50, it's speaking about the meaning behind the number 4. In Japanese, 4 used to be 'shi', but it has now been changed to 'yon'. Shi means death and so, 4 is an unlucky number (along with 9). he person immediately knew death was coming because 4 = death. That's also probably why 'sayonara' is used as a forever sort of goodbye; it's not meant to be said when your going out and coming back. It's more of a death/leaving forever thing.

When a man was on the top floor, a woman appeared there. She was the most beautiful to him. He fell in love with her. But she wanted to commit suicide. He wanted her to live. She tried to jump off the top floor of the building many times. Then she calls him every time, "I'm on the top floor right now." He stopped her suicide every time. He wanted her to live and kept encouraging her. But she continued that strange behavior forever. He gradually began to find it impossible to stop her suicide. If I can't save her, I have no meaning to live. He said “I wanted to die.” When she heard that, she invited him to die with him. He agreed with it. He finally understood her true intentions. She wanted me to die with her. And the two jumped together from the top floor. This song is based on a novel. It's “the temptation of Tanatos”. Thanatos is a god of death. Its appearance can only be seen by humans who want to die. Its appearance looks most attractive to suicide applicants. It fascinates them and causes them to die. Actually,He wanted to die. There came the woman he thought was the most beautiful. She was Thanatos. He fell in love with her and she fell in love with him. But she's a grim reaper, so she can't connect with him. So she fascinated him and forced him to commit suicide. And she kisses him as if to say, "You can be with me now."

Highly recommend you take a listen Maretu. The songs he creates touch extremely dark, taboo, and/or disturbing topics. (As I’m sure you know a lot of Vocaloid songs do) The ones I find most interesting are “Mind Brand,” “S.I.U,” “Coin Locker Baby,” and “Suji”

For those wondering the song *Racing into the Night* is inspired by a novel called The Temptation of Thanatos A boy was tired after a long day of work then he saw a girl on his apartment's rooftop planning to jump off so he save her then he fell in love to the girl instantly but after that the girl would still try to jump off but before that he would first call the boy then the boy rushes to saves the girl and the girl said "I can hear the god of death, Thanatos is calling me" Then the boy said "Dont listen to him, listen to me" but the girl intention didn't change until the boy got angry and said "Im tired of this" then the girl said "You will surely understand someday" Then the boy come into a conclusion and said "I can't take this anymore I want to die" then the girls said "Did you finally understand?" So they decided to jump off together as they *Raced into the Night*. In the end the girl didn't die becuase it turns out that the girl was actually just a hallucination for the boy and its actually his grim reaper that trying to lure him to his death in the end the Grim Reaper succeeded. What do you think about this story? For me it's a Scary yet Wonderful Story

Hello! I wanted to ask you something. Can you make videos of solved/unsolved crime cases? Cuz your voice is sooooo dope. Ngl. Anddd when u made the video “Secret of wysteria” (sorry if i spelt it wrong) in that video when you talked about Albert Fish and his crimes, you made it sound more scarier. Idk the way you talk, your voice it’s just so nice to listen and makes me more focused on the topic. Haha idk wtf am I saying and asking but it’s okay if you don’t want to😅 and I would probably not get a respond :

Now that you have discovered yoasobi you should react to ado next, I am confident that you are going to love her voice so here are some songs for you: Readymade Usseewa limbo All of them are bangers Wolpis kater is another singer that I want you to know about, the songs he cover barely has any story to it though, but I highly recommend checking him out, his voice is just godly: Batsubyou Alcoholic Oxalis I have been a fan of your channel from the very beginning so thank you for the wonderful videos and I hope you will grow even more in the future. Anyway have a good day.❤️❤️❤️

Just a random theory on the pink blob :) Throughout the song the girl has the blob because the guy believes the girl was the one that was blinded by death but in the end he realizes that it wasnt the girl that was blinded, it was him that was blinded because the girl never wanted to die, she wanted to bring him to death and it strikes him as he realizes everything and how he was the blinded one from the beginning and not the girl Just a thought tho :)
