Well actually it's spelled correctly if you go by the hebrew meaning of this name. in hebrew we have a fruit called "Tamar", (you don't say it like Tay-mar you simply say Tamar) and it means gate, so in Israel for example Tamar and Tamara (which based on the name Tamar that means gate but with an A at the end), is a very popular name for girls..

Roneisha Sanders Lol I feel like the panel either ignored or didn't hear Jeannie's side comment from her Mom. At first, it sounds like Olivia said she wanted to name her Jeannie because she "dreamed her daughter like like the Jeannie", but she actually said she "dreamed her daughter LIGHT like the Jeannie," meaning she wanted her daughter to be more pale like Barbara Eden (the pale, white woman who played the Jeannie on I Dream of Jeannie."

Zemen H I know I’m late to this but Vietnamese moms always spins things negatively, like when I was a child I asked where I came from and she said she picked me up from the garbage. I’m sure Mamma Mai was joking somewhat and she probably saw the show and it was easy to pronounce. My mom said that she didn’t know English very well so she picked the easiest name she could find that began with an L since my father’s name starts with an L from a baby book the nurse gave her.

So we're just gonna skip over the deep rooted colorism issues that Jeanies mom displayed in that statement.... Alright
@tyerra12139 жыл бұрын
Most cultures have colorism issues so her comment wasn't a surprise to me. At this point I'm sure Jeannie takes it as a joke and is now comfortable in the skin she's in. I grew up in a house full of darker skinned people so I was always the pale one. Despite the fact we joked about color my mother always taught us self confidence. Although its different I wouldn't change my skin color for anything because that's how God made me.
@AFOS949 жыл бұрын
tyerra1213 I am well aware of colorism being a global issue but I don't think it should be skimmed over just because she's grown and has gotten over it. To me that doesn't take away from the damage it could have possibly done to her as a little girl, and how that could have largely negatively impacted the way she perceived herself. I think it's a issue whether or not she's overcome it. This is something no one no matter what cultural background should go thru
@msnandimarie70239 жыл бұрын
+A Swaby Noooo, her mother has that serious issue. I am not surprised that Jeannie has insecurities. That is such a disgrace. EVERY culture has an issue with dark skin, very SAD.

Why does no one ever call out the colorism and toxicity that Jeanie is describing about her mom??? She's literally saying her mom wished she was light skinned. I know it's what she was raised to think but just an acknowledgment like "but of course now I know that's not really cool" would have been nice. There are young dark skinned Asian girls watching this show and what they'll take away from this is that colorism is funny and not a big deal, and the hurt they feel will be brushed off.
