I think some of my favorite scenes from it’s always sunny is when most of the group is together doing really weird shit in front of normal people and the gang is just acting like it’s normal while the person looks on in abject horror

My favourite scenes are when an argument goes on for too long or becomes too absurd and one character finally loses their cool and flips out. They're all so good at making a screaming match actually be funny instead of pointless like so many other comedies do with conflict.

Rewatch podcasts are always an absolute chore because they rarely give you any insight on the writing process(AKA the actual interesting part of these productions), instead just talking about things that happened on set that would have been funny if you were there. I think that this is such a good example of how writers, show runners, and actors have a symbiotic relationship in the world of television. The shows (especially sitcoms) that survive have that great chemistry between all three groups. It allows everyone to be creative, be spontaneous, and grow together. A creative decision from an actor can give new ammo for the writers to think about. The show runners can bring in guest star/character actors to act opposite that creative choice later. That one episode with a new talent can give the writers and actors a new idea to run with. A symphony of chaos.
@KalCounty
@KalCounty Жыл бұрын
It definitely helps that it seems collaborative. DeVito and Olson were both given the room they wanted to push their characters further and the others wrote for that, making it so the actors can use their unique strengths to make the characters stand out.

Sunny is like a live action southpark. As well as being hilarious and insane, it also is a show that very subtly satirizes society and culture in a very accurate way, especially in later seasons.
@lam8138

Id say they lost a lot of that subtlety recently, been much more on-the-nose. Miss the days of gun fever or the one where Frank makes the gang fight amongst each other so they don’t question what he’s up to. The only on-the-nose political episode I liked recently was Mac Finds his Pride- Frank slowly revealing and understanding his own homophobia was rllllly good and my god was that ending a heart wrenched

@@cankhovich1796 What are you on about? Literally the first episode makes fun of the gang for being racist. The second is about abortion and talks about how men will often be anti choice up until the moment it effects them. The show has always made fun of the gang for being deplorable people, and so when they say and do stupid and bigoted things, they’re the butt of the joke. Always sunny has always been “woke”, I’m guessing you just never realised that the show is making fun of you until now. I agree that the newer season sucked but that’s more due to them being more topical about covid which is something I just personally don’t enjoy

The reason Sunny is still consistently brilliant bc they have never bent to pressure to change. They have evolved the show in an organic way that fits the characters. Me and my friends quote Dennis and Charlie on the regular. “I am untethered and my rage knows no bounds” “milk steak” and others are ones we use on eachother all the time. @@denimchicken104 man i'm always in the minority when i say this but i hated season 13 finale, the show is satire so it works better when mac is closeted. i say this as a gay man who grew up hating will and grace and seeing it as a gay minstrel show with every stereotype and that's how it feels now with mac, suddenly he likes musicals and interpretive dance? feels like they just wanted to virtue signal. honestly it felt like an ego trip from rob, he shows off this highly choreographed dance with his new fit body and he gets to feel good about himself for playing a gay guy coming out to his dad...danny devito blubbering "i get it" was just so hokey cheesy and out of character, least favorite moment of the show. we don't watch the show to see characters grow emotionally, the whole point is they're terrible people. mac was always presented more bi with latent closeted homo tendencies he couldn't admit to. that was the way itshould've stayed. season 13 was my least favorite, i think they did a little better in season 14 and 15 and i enjoyed the ireland trip until that bit of pfizer propaganda in the last episode. that was really unfortunate. everyone knows now the vaccines never prevented transmission, even bill gates said as much, but this was known well before that episode was made, harvard did a worldwide study finding the more vaccinated a population, either it made no difference or the transmission rates actually tended to be higher. it's funny i remember a statistic from Waterford, Ireland, it was the most vaccinated county at 99% and yet the highest transmission rates in the country. and yet somehow Charlie's dad died because frank didn't get vaccinated (but if the dad was vaccinated, isn't that supposed to protect him from death or serious illness? how was frank responsible) and then they piled on every strawman to make frank represent the kooky conspiracy theorist (even though before the pandemic everyone openly agreed the pharma industry is corrupt and knowingly got everyone hooked on legal heroin for profit) sorry if anyone actually read all this lol i'll get off my soapbox. i just really hate seeing this corporate unscientific misinformation worming it's way into my favorite show. it's like therapeutic for me, i wish they could just get back to the writing they did seasons 7-11 those were the golden years

I think the word "serendipity" of being inspired in the moment fits this and how tv allow for this with a serialised show. You appreciate the creative left turns and/or organic growth of the creativity that is visible in the output. Film and streaming does really allow for this approach. It's a one and done situation, you have to set your lines in the sand. If you do get that serendipity creativity it's normally in early drafts and we as the viewer never see it, its just the end product.

Great analysis. I started watching It's Always Sunny around season 6 and was instantly hooked. But man is it a long wait for cable shows in between seasons. And yeah their age, in relation to them not changing cracks me up when I think of Welcome to Wrexham, a Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney documentary about them owning a soccer club in England. Rob's wife Kaitlin Olson yells "you're a middle aged man!" when Rob does something a bit in character. And stagnation is good. I understood why Cheers had to swap out Shelly Long, but Sam selling the bar never sat well for me.

I feel that what also really helps the characters in the show work even with the more ridiculous and perhaps"flanderized" scenes are the various different straight-men in the show. Having just ordinary people having to deal with, or witness this group of lunatics interacting with them really helps show that the show is in on the joke with us. I didn't watch this show for so long and when I finally did about a year ago, me and my girlfriend absolutely loved it and we binge-watched the hell out of! Such a funny show, absolutely off the walls bonkers hilarity! Even when it wasn't laugh-out-loud funny, it was clever. Hopefully the next season comes out soon!

hey! love the video, but as someone who's studied the making of Casablanca specifically as a reflection of the earlier Hollywood filmmaking era, it could not have been more chaotic. basically everything had to be shot on sets, except for the plane scene, the script wasn't even finished by the time the movie started being filmed, the actress Ingrid Bergman didn't even know which romantic interest her character was going to end up with, and was very confused about her role in the film, told to 'play it in between'. The actual actress for Ilsa was originally meant to be Ann Sheridan, but its been a while since I've studied this, she was either scrapped due to 'inter-studio loaning' or the fact they wanted to change which country Ilsa was from. They weren't actually meant to keep the iconic 'As time goes by' in the film, with (90% sure) Max Steiner, wanting to create a new original soundtrack for the movie, but had 'Time' as a place holder. When he tried to rerecord the scenes with the new song in it, Ilsa was obviously needed, but Ingrid B had already signed up for another role, and had cut her hair for it, and couldn't re shoot. Apparently the final line 'I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship' was ad hoc, or edited in afterwards, but this is harder to prove. They had BARELY finished editing by the time it came out, it was very rushed despite being the 'A' movie of the year for Warner Bros and it was SO chaotic and SO hecking funny, and, just like 'Always Sunny' became a staple of the genre thanks for reading, my apologies for the rant, loved the video :)

Long running stories, especially something as pressed for time as Television, contain the most human element known to man: adaptation. A boy born in Mississippi may not expect to be a 30 year old Bouncer who's divorced twice with 3 kids living in Canada with a herniated disc one day. But it might just be something that happens to them due to events they did not or could not foresee. Life is a constant nonstop chain of actions and reactions. A movie may do everything in its power to resist that force and perfectly portray a vision a director and/or writer had. But a show can portray something that nobody could have ever in one moment plotted. No person in 2005, not even the writers of Always Sunny themselves, could have thought up the entire series of Always Sunny as it is today.

Kaitlin is so good. Charlie Mac and Dennis are idiot losers, but they don't really know it. They get to express a degree of confidence, no matter how misplaced. Dee's curse is that she's just smart enough to realize EXACTLY how much of an idiot she is. Absolutely incredible character work.

It’s a show that when I first watched I didn’t get it at all but friends kept telling me to give it a go .. But when you begin to learn the characters & how the show works it’s top tier & episodes are even funnier when you rewatch them & spot something subtle that you may have missed before .. I don’t think a day passes where I don’t quote this show ..

It's driving me crazy that no one is talking about how the Ireland season was made and the fact the Charley Day speaks perfect Irish. I know it's just one scene but he speaks it like he's fluent, one syllable is a little off. You can tell he worked hard on it, possibly looking forward to shooting in Ireland and then, COVID.

I usually despise what I call “embarrassment humor,” usually consisting of horrible (yet comedic) things happening to the protagonist or character. Ben Stiller has made so many of these. I don’t like it because I end up feeling second hand embarrassment or shame for the character, especially if the character is very likable. That’s the genius of IASIP: the characters are such obviously horrible people that there is zero chance you’ll feel empathy for them, thus freeing the audience to enjoy the comedy in its purest form.

I think Dee and the Waitress, have a thing for each other. Both down on their lucks drunks, with promiscuity issues. Dee would make the waitress feel tough, the waitress would be vulnerable for Dee so she wouldn't have to. maybe the waitresses attraction to Dennis is in part a confused attraction to Dee. Like the joke is that she puts up with Charlie because she wants to keep Dennis in her orbit, but what if it was actually Dee? ya, the waitress is like "why don't I juste let this void eat me up" and Dee is like " I am going to Run this void"

The podcast is very interesting as a snapshot in time. We can see how the show creators now feel, after many years, about their handling of some subjects such as disability, race and misogyny and how their views have changed. A good example is the episode title "Dee dates a Re----"

"The gang goes jihad" and the episode where Dennis tries politics is two of the funniest episodes in sitcom history or comedy history. Sunny is also one of the best tv-shows in history. Although I think they have peaked the average level of the show is really good. Not one bad episode only less funny even if the later season is nowhere near to earlier in funny, imo.
