Let's protect our water and make it safer together. Subscribe here: • Water 101
After we’d already completed the construction of the stone cabin’s new roof, we discovered that our roof timbers were undersized (thanks to a few misordered building materials). NOT the news you want as an amateur DIYer building your own home! The solution - two huge wooden purlins. Our stone tiny house is already pretty small, so we really didn’t want to give up additional headroom on our DIY mezzanine...so, we got a second opinion, & hoped for a different outcome!
Ricky’s traditional stonework skills get put to the test in awkward spaces & working at height in the sweltering Portuguese summer heat. Meanwhile Victoria tries out some new homesteading preserving skills with produce straight from our own little farm!
LIKE THIS VIDEO if you enjoyed it and SUBSCRIBE to follow our journey as we document our life here in Portugal and the many DIY projects that we'll be tackling including renovating a tiny stone home, setting up systems to grow some of our own food and finally restoring the 100+ year old farm house.
Also say hi in the comments! We'd love to hear from you 😊
Ricky and Victoria x
-------------
We're Ricky & Victoria 👋 We're slowly bringing an abandoned off grid Portuguese farm back to life & transforming it into a beautiful homestead for us & our two rescue dogs Teddy & Poppy.
We both agree that we’re not experts in anything that we do here, however we don’t let that stop us from giving it a try. We live our life by trying. We live our life by doing. We live our LIFE BY LIVING.

I'm so glad Victoria decided to join Ricky in his video productions. She's a star! In the stone house there are a few little holes through the walls that let in light. It would be great if you could install glass brick in the holes to preserve the effect. (I meant to post this comment on your last video)

Victoria : It does not matter how high or deep you plant veggies as Voles burrow in from underground - so what you need do is crock every pot , so that the burowers can't gain entry and that might seem hard work but remember it for next season before planting up. Either Crock with broken tiles or use Metal Mesh laid across the drain holes.

It's so disappointing when critters damage your garden! I have had good results deterring voles, moles, and gophers with castor oil (it's biodegradable). I use 1C (237 mL) castor oil and 1/4C (59 mL) liquid dish soap to emulsify the oil, then mix about 6T (89mL) of that mixture with a gallon (3.8L) of water and spray the soil all around my garden plants every week. I use a dedicated garden sprayer because the castor oil will leave a gooey coating on the equipment. After the spray is on the ground, it needs to be watered in. I work from the outside edge of the garden inward. I spray only the ground as the oil can be phototoxic and I apply it late in the day so the oil doesn't sit on foliage in the heat and sun. The castor oil is bitter and irritates the vole and mole eyes. It takes a bit of time for it to start working, and if I don't stay on schedule, it loses efficacy. I also use Molemax Mole & Vole Repellent Granules which are organically approved and safe for pets and people. They're pellets soaked in castor oil that release the oil over time. I apply that monthly through the growing season and put an extra heavy application on in autumn as we get too much snow here to use it year 'round. I've also started interplanting with daffodils, alliums (ornamental and edible), hyacinths, salvia, and thyme. I plant garlic and onions at the perimeter of my garden, then use companion planting on the interior. I stay away from alliums near my asparagus because they can stunt the asparagus plants, but use thyme. I'm a proponent of companion planting for garden health and pest control. I used to grow castor plants. Castor beans are perennial shrubs that can grow up to 15 feet tall and have thick, palm-like leaves. They emit castor oil from their roots and cut down on having to spray. They also produce deadly seeds, but the oil made from the seeds is not poisonous. That's why I use it to keep moles, voles, and gophers away. I have a dog who likes to eat everything he finds. Because the beans are toxic, no more growing castor plants! Your plan to put hardware cloth under your raised beds is great. It has worked well for me. It's the rest of the garden that I have to protect with castor spray. Good luck finding a solution that works for you!

I’m so sorry you’re loosing so much produce to the voles! We have ground squirrels and moles and it’s super frustrating! What we have to do is lay heavy duty chicken wire underneath all of our planters. We live on a sand dune, so we can’t plant directly into the ground. Basically, we create a metal cage under our garden to keep the critters out.

Love your channel. We live in an area with a lot of snakes for years including poisonous Rattlesnakes. If we were outside we would pour cold water on them or spray cold water with a garden hose and the drop in body temperature causes them to go dormant. We could then scoop them up with a shovel and move them to a safer place. Indoors you can achieve the same thing by throwing a cold wet towel over them. Wait a couple minutes and scoop towel and all up and take outside. Snakes can be scary but they are also beneficial in keeping the mice and voles down that destroy your plants. Hope this helps in the future.

Try a trench close around the outside raised bed wall, and fill it with gravel (like a moat) 6 to 12 inches deep and 6 inches wide in a new location to avoid current tunnels. Fill their entrances with gravel. Or, use only raised beds with mesh under them. Trapping them only works on a small population and if you are allowed to relocate them. You'll have to move to a new area if you want to try mesh fencing an area.

To fill those gaps between stones, I have seen people use the cake decorating bags with the tube on the end, but you squeeze the bags after putting wet concrete in the bag, and it goes right in those cracks.

Have never used the piping bag technique for pointing before. I know it has to be quite wet though to not clog the bag’s nozzle so won’t be suitable for doing the exterior of the building but maybe we can try it on the interior 👍🏼

Superb stonework Rickie - congratulations! You'll find you get quicker with practice too - one tip I got early on from an ol' fella was "never put a stone down". He meant when we pick up a stone, if it doesn't quite fit as planned either knap it to shape... or find an alternative place to use it. The discipline of not second guessing ourselves by choosing another stone forces the pace of work, and our productivity gains from the positive feedback we get from faster progress. It's still a zen task of course! 😎😁

Stonework looking marvelous! Ricky, think of all the construction knowledge you’ve gained in rebuilding this stone house. Amazing. You’re doing a fantastic job & your helper isn’t so bad either! I love the color of the shutters on the stone house… perfect! Victoria, voles eat roots moles eat grubs. Hopefully you don’t have a vole infestation! The only thing to get rid of them is a vole pellet repellent that you’d need to spread across your entire property - about twice a year. Sending them to the neighbors!! They’re almost impossible to trap, but do like fruit so that might work as bait.

Mint needs plenty if water - spearmint is the best - when I make my Christmas Day meal, I make my own gravy from the leftover stock of the roast etc. After making the hand made gravy, I love putting mint into the gravy, YUM YUM. To this day I still eat the gravy by the spoonful! I make my own vanilla custard as well. Recipes from my mother. These are the only way to have them. You know exactly what is in everything! Enjoy your gardening PS If you have a downpipe from this building, think about putting in a rainwater tank to collect the water for drinking purposes. Nice clean tasting water.

Great job on the stone work! With mint, it is better in a pot as it can get very invasive and take over your whole garden bed or garden. (Except for the vole problem…). They need lots of water, Almost swampy conditions. I keep mine in a pot without holes, effectively a bucket, and it dies down after summer finishes, & comes back every year. Also in middle of summer you can take a cutting of mint, & stick it in soil and it will grow. Same with basil. Cheers, Poppy is a clever girl! 😊

I live in Mississippi. Got to really watch for snakes here. We have about 50 species with 7 being highly venomous, Northern Cottonmouth, Western Cottonmouth, Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, Timber Rattlesnake, Pygmy Rattlesnake (two types), Copperhead, and Coral Snake. Several of these are pretty common where I live in central Mississippi. I see and unfortunately have to kill cottonmouths, timber rattlesnakes, and copperheads on my property several times a year. These can be a real danger to young children and dogs. A big cottonmouth or timber rattlesnake (5-6 feet long) can kill an adult if not treated expeditiously. Adult fatalities are rare, but the bites are serious. One thing I like about hiking and camping in Scotland is that there aren't any animals that can kill you like black bears, grizzlies, and mountain lions that are out west (I was born in Colorado). We only have a few black bears here in the Mississippi Delta and I don't know of any attacks. I actually like snakes and think they are cool and I am glad you didn't just kill the snake you found.

I’m really looking forward to seeing all the interior finished and how your going to put your personal touches with furniture etc to bring it altogether. Well done folks, it’s looking amazing.

Fig jam, fig crumble, figgy pudding (for Christmas?). I love fig jam with orange peel, cheese and crackers. Good job on the rafters. It looks like a heck of a job! When you dig out the raised beds put down two layers of a strong chicken wire. It needs to cover the bottom and go up the sides. The open squares need to be really small. It's the only thing I know that most critters can't bite through. Two layers of wire is better.

just to say, I bought that same Waterdrop filter a couple of months ago. I keep it in the fridge. Love it. the list of chemicals it filters is impressive. I plan on taking it on the road with me. " A nice piece of kit", as True Blue Travellers would say. :D

You guys are doing such a good job, I don't know how you can get so much done in the hot weather, you are real troopers. I hope you are able to triumph over the naughty voles. I am still wondering about the Orange Thief.!! Stay well and take care. Oh and good luck with the puppy training. 🦘🦘🦘

Hi :-) My grandad used to freeze figs. Sealed in a plastic tub. Works great. Just leave out on a few kitchen towels when you need them again.
