The chicken - noodle soup came into my mind right away, very traditional German method. Basically, it serves two purposes - firstly, it is easy to digest and healthy (made from natural ingredients) and secondly, it helps you to stay hydrated, especially if you sweat a lot due to fever etc. Instead of using a "nose shower?" (Nasendusche), we use the inhaling method. For the traditional application or simplest variant, you only need a large pot, hot water (not boiling water!) and a towel: let the water in the pot get hot, build a "mini sauna" with a large towel over your head and bend over the pot to breathe in the rising steam. In addition depending on your liking, either use some salt or put some drops of essential oils such as peppermint oil, eucalyptus, sage, camphor or thyme into the water. Slowly breath in through your mouth and out through the nose. The heat and the areosoles themself help to clear the blocked nose and sinuses caused by a cold by means of the rising vapors, making breathing easier, soothing irritated airways and relieving coughs. Inhale for about 10 minutes, then use the towel to dry up your sweaty face. Thats the way I still remember from being a child myself. Nowadays instead of using a pot with hot water you can also buy an electric inhalator, however I never used one myself.

The old chicken „altes Suppenhuhn“ supposedly contains something that helps the immune system fight off viruses. I forgot the name for that, but according to some articles I read ages ago (way before 2020) scientists actually found a special compound, that does that. And old female chicken seem to have more of that than younger (male) chickens. But that’s just what I remember. 🤷‍♀️

Another home remedy were Wadenwickel for pulling a high fever down into your extremities, and in my childhood we used Salzstangen instead of Zwieback (Salzstangen und Cola).

Lüften is great when you are sick, you feel better from the fresh air and it lessens the risk of your loved ones getting infected as well. I also love chicken soup! It’s quite easy make, when you’re fine and have a big enough pot, you just need an old chicken [„altes Suppenhuhn“], greens for soup [best from you favorite stand at the market], some spices, onion and potatoes, soup pasta or rice [according to your taste].

Boil and mash the onion let it get cold and mix with honey. The best cough syrup ever. Both onions and honey have an antibacterial effect and the essential oils of the onions dissolve the mucus. It lasts a few days in the fridge, but strangely enough, it doesn't work anymore when it's preserved, so you can't buy it.

My Bavarian grandfather used to drink boiled beer with honey when he had caught a cold, and it seemingly helped. I personally prefer cold beer and tea with honey when I'm sick. And, that's true: I'm very hesitant about taking pills. An Ibuprofen now and then, but that's about all.

I wanted to write the same: hot beer with honey, especially with a fever. If done correctly you sweat like a pig and the fever is gone.

Warm beer (not boiled!) works as well if you use alcoholfree beer. But it must be beer, not Malzbier. Drink it and go to bed. You will sweat and feel better in the morning 🙂

Moin, Hühnersuppe habe ich immer zu Hause. Allerdings in Dose!

I always have a cap with me, even in summer I have one at least in the car. It started when I began scuba diving. You need completely healthy ears and nose for that, so I take no risk.

3:20 What? One country to the south, that's not used against a cold or after vomiting but only when someone has diarrhea. Lindenblütentee mit Honig und Ingwer (dictionary says: lime blossom tea with honey and ginger) when having the flu makes you warm and sweat a lot. (higher bodyheat like when you have fever helps killing the flu virus as it's not heat resistant)

Nada, nil, zip!

Actually, the Cola (the real sugar-loaded stuff, not diet) and Zwieback or Salzstangen are supposed to refill some of the nutritions and minerals you've lost when being sick, and not feeling like having a full meal yet. Most kids love it! 😅
