I heard Tori's version before I heard Slayer sing it, so when I heard Slayer, I was obviously very surprised at how different it was. What I love about Tori's covers, though, is that she gets inside the beating heart of a song and sings it in a way that anyone who has heard that song before just gets it. Like I said, Raining Blood wasn't something I'd heard before Tori sang it. But your reaction reminds me of myself every time I've heard Tori cover a song that I did know before she covered it. It touches you down deep.

You just know she is going to do something COMPLETELY different and make it almost unrecognisable from the original. But I'd also love to hear her sing over the original track. Would be epic!

that rumbling sound is actually Justin Meldal-Johnsen on the bass guitar. in the liner notes it's listed as "bass painting" Tori quote: "Beck's bass player [Justin Meldal-Johnsen] suggested I do a cover of Slayer's 'Raining Blood.' I was reading about what was going on in Afghanistan -- the way women were being oppressed, the destruction of religious statues. And when I heard that song, I just imagined a huge juicy vagina coming out of the sky, raining blood over all those racist, misogynist fuckers." [Spin - October 2001]

When she does a cover (many of which she prepares hours before a show at fan requests) she somehow seems to nail paying a respectful homage to the original while turning it upside down and inside out and creating an original expression.

Boys for Pele is my favorite album, followed closely by Little Earthquakes. Choirgirl Hotel and To Venus and Back are also great. If you're into her covers, check out the Strange Little Girls album. Its a cover album of songs written and originally performed by men, reinterpreted by Amos from a female point of view.

I can appreciate the talent, but I'll stick with the Slayer version. This version totally loses the feeling to me. Perhaps seeing it performed live many times has skewed me to expect that adrenaline rush. Her voice is amazing, but I think Tom's far from perfect voice is part of what makes it work. To each their own, though. We all like what we like. Thanks for the listen!

That's fine dude. I too prefer the Slayer version, but I simply loved what she did to it. They are both VERY different interpretations of the song. Haven't check the dictionary for definition of "song cover" but in my book this doesn't qualify as such. Same lyrics, totally different music. I mean, absolutely nothing in common. I very much appreciate Tori's voice and artistic approach but tbh I'd never play this again, just not my sound.
@melvinthinks3 ай бұрын
Fair enough. Personally speaking, I like it when artists cover a song and make it their own. She could have just sung over a backing track but she has completely transformed it. I do still think it should be recognised as a cover, though.
@Kgula3 ай бұрын
You know there's "making it your own" while keeping some of the original melodic line and then there's having it as unrecognisable from the original as possible, so much so that it doesn't even qualify as a cover, this is the latter... @melvinthinks
@nikolakozhuharov10423 ай бұрын
@@melvinthinks as mentioned by Kgula, there's making it your own, like Metallica's "Whiskey in the Jar" or Marilyn Manson's "Tainted Love"; and then there's Tori's song which has the same lyrics as Slayer's but absolutely different rhythm, melody and emotion. I'm not against doing that, it's totally fine and Tori's take on it is as art as it gets, I just don't see it as a cover.

We're not exactly fans of Tori Amos, but we were interested to see how she covers an iconic thrash metal song. The song was nice and dark and the voice was also quite good, although in our opinion the song would have needed a little more aggressive piano playing and singing in the second half, or at least in the last third. It was a bit as if the song had been building up to a climax the whole time that never came.
@melvinthinks3 ай бұрын
I think that's her intention. She keeps building it which makes you almost nervous and anxious, but it doesn't break out into what most of us would expect. That's what makes it even more dark and haunting.
